China’s mandatory national standard GB 48001—2026 requires car doors to have mechanically operable interior and exterior handles, plus enough exterior space for a person to use the handle. The requirements for new vehicles take effect on January 1, 2027; vehicle models already in production have a transition period ending January 1, 2029, according to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The rule targets function, not appearance alone: a low-profile handle is not automatically prohibited if it meets the mechanical-operation and access requirements.
What does China’s new door-handle rule require?
MIIT’s summary of GB 48001—2026, Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles, says each door must have an exterior and an interior handle that can be operated mechanically. An electrical release by itself does not meet that requirement: a purely mechanical emergency-release means must remain available to open the door if vehicle power or electronic systems fail. MIIT’s standard explainer also specifies minimum hand-operation space at exterior handles of 60×25×20 mm.
- Inside the vehicle: the door must be capable of mechanical opening.
- Outside the vehicle: the handle must be mechanically operable and leave the specified space for a hand to reach and use it.
- When power fails: a mechanical emergency release must still permit manual opening.
The MIIT summary describes the requirement as applying to “each door.” The Associated Press (AP) reports that the rule’s mechanical-release requirement covers vehicle doors except the tailgate. That scope detail is reported by AP; MIIT’s explainer does not spell out the tailgate exception in its text.
Does China’s rule ban every hidden or flush door handle?
No. The shorthand “hidden-handle ban” can obscure what the standard actually requires. The decisive issues are whether the handle can be operated mechanically and whether the exterior design provides the required hand-operation space—not simply whether the handle sits flush with the body or is hard to see.

A low-profile handle could therefore comply if it satisfies those functional requirements. A design that depends only on an electronic pop-out, touch sensor or powered release would not satisfy the mechanical-operation requirement as MIIT describes it. The standard’s 60×25×20 mm minimum applies to exterior hand-operation space; it is not a blanket rule that every handle must protrude by a particular distance.
Why is China changing the rules?
The safety concern is that a crash can damage wiring or cut electrical power, potentially leaving occupants unable to get out or rescuers unable to open the door from outside. MIIT also points to the risk of concealed handles becoming difficult to use when frozen in snow.

MIIT cites reported cases, including a vehicle that caught fire after leaving the road and an incident involving a handle frozen in snow. In one example, rescuers reportedly had to break a window to reach passengers. These cases illustrate the hazards regulators are addressing; they do not establish how often handle failures occur or provide a measured failure rate.
The rule places particular emphasis on two separate tasks: a passenger must be able to release a door from inside without relying on vehicle power, and someone outside must be able to find and physically use the exterior handle. A backup release that works only for an occupant would not, by itself, address the outside-access problem.

When does the standard take effect?

The transition period gives automakers time to modify designs and manage the shift between older and newer products. It does not mean that every car currently on the road must be retrofitted by 2029; the stated deadline concerns vehicle models produced and the standard’s compliance requirements.
Are Tesla door handles banned in China?
The standard does not name Tesla or prohibit a brand’s handles solely because they are hidden. Tesla vehicles sold in China will have to meet the same functional requirements within the applicable phase-in period: mechanical operation, including a way to open a door if electrical systems fail, and the required exterior hand space.

Separately, AP reported on August 21, 2026, that Tesla and Chinese automakers were recalling more than four million vehicles in China over safety concerns, mostly related to door handles. AP, citing China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, reported Tesla’s recall at about 2.98 million China-made and imported vehicles. It also reported recalls of more than 390,000 Xiaomi vehicles and more than 370,000 Leapmotor vehicles, and said Geely and XPENG were among other manufacturers conducting recalls. AP reported that Tesla would use software updates to mitigate risks.
Those are dated recall figures covering separate campaigns, not a final count of unique vehicles, and the recalls are distinct from the standard’s 2027 and 2029 compliance dates. A recall remedy for a particular vehicle does not, by itself, establish whether a future model design complies with GB 48001—2026.

How did the standard come together?
TechCrunch reported that initial research began in May 2025 with more than 40 manufacturers, suppliers and testing institutions involved, and that more than 100 industry experts took part in multiple discussions to frame and draft the standard. Its account named Chinese automakers including BYD, Geely, SAIC and Xiaomi, as well as foreign companies including General Motors, Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota and Volkswagen. TechCrunch said Tesla was not listed as an official drafter. These process details were reported by TechCrunch based on information from the government standards agency.
That drafting context shows the rule was developed through a broad industry process, but it does not establish how any individual manufacturer’s current or future handle design performs in a crash, fire or freezing conditions.
What should drivers check on their own car?
The new standard is a design and production requirement, not a substitute for knowing how to operate the specific vehicle you drive. If you are concerned about a current car, consult its owner’s manual for the mechanical interior and exterior release procedures, and check the applicable recall information with the manufacturer or the relevant regulator.
For evaluating a handle design, the rule’s practical tests are whether an occupant can open the door mechanically without vehicle power, whether an outside person can identify and grip the handle, and whether it can be used in the collision and low-temperature situations MIIT discusses. The reported window-breaking rescue illustrates the potential consequences of blocked access; a separate emergency escape tool may be useful context for preparedness, but it is not a remedy for a handle that fails these requirements or a replacement for mechanically operable handles.
