The V850E2H added signal-processing features to Renesas’s 32-bit automotive CPU core: a SIMD coprocessor that applies one instruction to four data units, plus branch prediction intended to speed execution. “Latest” describes the framing of a January 2011 EE Times article, not a current ranking of automotive architectures.
What “latest” meant in the original article
EE Times published “Latest 32-bit RISC architecture for automotive expands functionality” on January 21, 2011, about Renesas’s V850E2H core. Renesas had announced its development on October 1, 2010. The article’s wording is therefore historical; it does not establish that V850E2H is the latest automotive RISC architecture today. EE Times’s 2011 article and Renesas’s announcement provide the original context.
What functionality V850E2H added
The V850 family is described as a 32-bit Harvard architecture. V850E2H extended its real-time control role with dedicated vector registers and signal-processing instructions, aimed at embedded signal-processing work as well as automotive control. Renesas characterized the goal as “Realizes Real-Time Control and Signal Processing Performance on a Par with DSP.” That is the company’s description, not an independently established performance finding.
SIMD for signal processing
Renesas said the SIMD coprocessor can execute one instruction across four data units. This lets a single instruction operate on multiple data elements, a useful pattern for signal-processing workloads. The claim describes the core’s capability; it does not by itself show how quickly a particular application will run.

Branch prediction for execution flow
Renesas also said V850E2H added a branch predictor to accelerate loop execution. The company reported an approximately 10% execution-performance improvement for programs without signal processing, attributing the gain to branch prediction. This is a Renesas-reported figure, not an independent benchmark; the announcement does not establish a universal improvement across programs or systems.
Do not confuse V850E2H with RH850/E2H
The names are similar, but they refer to different things. V850E2H is the CPU core discussed in the 2011 article. RH850/E2H is a distinct Renesas automotive powertrain microcontroller that has a current product listing. Its product details should not be treated as specifications for the older V850E2H core. See Renesas’s RH850/E2H product page.

What the historical claims do—and do not—show
The cited materials establish the features Renesas announced and the performance figures it claimed. They do not provide an independent benchmark or a same-conditions comparison against other automotive processors. A meaningful comparison for a design decision would need to match the intended control workload, SIMD or vector needs, real-time behavior, benchmark conditions, peripherals and integration, software and toolchain compatibility, safety features, and the exact device’s lifecycle status. The V850E2H claims alone cannot support a current product ranking.

Core architecture and product availability are separate questions. Renesas’s current pages give different lifecycle labels for specific V850 derivatives: V850E2/Fx4 is marked “Last Time Buy,” while V850E2/Px4 is marked “Not Recommended for New Designs.” These labels apply to those derivatives, not automatically to every V850 part, and lifecycle information can change. Verify the particular device directly with Renesas before a new design or purchase decision: V850E2/Fx4 and V850E2/Px4.
