China has adopted a mandatory national standard requiring mechanically operable interior and exterior door handles, with accessible space for using the exterior handle. GB 48001—2026 takes effect on January 1, 2027; it is not a blanket rule that every flush-style handle is automatically prohibited.
What China’s standard requires
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) says national standard GB 48001—2026, Safety Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handles, requires every door to have an interior and exterior handle that can be opened mechanically. The exterior handle must leave room for mechanical operation, with a minimum hand-operation space of 60 × 25 × 20 mm. MIIT’s summary states that requirement; the Associated Press describes the rule as applying to every door except the tailgate. MIIT’s summary and AP’s report describe the measure.
MIIT’s February 10, 2026 article gives the requirement in Chinese: “每个车门都应配备可以机械开启的车外门把手和车内门把手，且车外门把手必须预留机械操作空间。” In translation: “Every door should be equipped with an exterior door handle and an interior door handle that can be mechanically opened, and space for mechanical operation must be reserved for the exterior door handle.” This is a translation of the article’s text, not an original English quotation. The article attributes its material to CCTV News and MIIT’s WeChat account.
Does the rule ban all flush handles?
Not on the evidence of the operative requirements summarized by MIIT and AP. The key questions are whether the inside and outside releases can open mechanically and whether the exterior handle has the required hand-operation space. A handle’s flush appearance alone does not establish whether it complies. MIIT’s article says hidden handles will leave the market, but a specific design’s compliance depends on its construction and the complete standard text.

For a particular vehicle, assess these points rather than relying on a label such as “flush” or “hidden”:
- Does the interior release mechanically open the door?
- Can the exterior handle be operated mechanically without vehicle power?
- Does the exterior handle provide the specified hand-operation space?
- When was the model approved, and when does the relevant production or transition requirement apply?
The cited summaries do not determine whether a particular model, including a specific version of a vehicle, complies. That requires the full standard and the vehicle’s approval details.

When the rule takes effect
MIIT sets the standard’s general implementation date at January 1, 2027. AP reports that already-approved models have until January 1, 2029 to complete design changes. These are different dates: the later date is a reported transition allowance for previously approved models, not the standard’s general effective date.
Why regulators cite safety concerns
The stated concern is that an electrically dependent handle may become unusable after a severe collision or electrical failure. That could make it harder for occupants to get out and for rescuers to enter. MIIT’s summary also cites handles freezing in winter conditions. These are the reasons reported for the standard; the cited coverage does not quantify how often such failures occur or establish that all flush handles fail.

How common were hidden handles in China?
An MIIT-hosted article reported that about 60% of China’s top 100 new-energy vehicle models by sales in April 2025 had hidden door handles. The article does not identify the publisher of the underlying dataset, so the figure should be understood as a number reported by that article, not as a separately verified MIIT study. The MIIT-hosted article provides the reported figure.

In a report dated August 21, 2026, AP said China had announced recalls involving more than four million vehicles across several automakers for issues mostly related to door handles. AP reported about 2.98 million Tesla vehicles among those recalls and also named Xiaomi and Leapmotor. Those recalls are later safety context; they are not the requirements of GB 48001—2026, and they do not mean the standard had already taken effect. AP’s August 2026 report covers the recalls.
