The Camaro ZL1 1LE is a ZL1 fitted with Chevrolet’s Extreme Track Performance Package. It keeps the supercharged LT4 V8, while replacing or adding key track hardware: Multimatic DSSV dampers, wider lightweight wheels and tires, and dedicated aerodynamic parts. The exact equipment depends on model year, so a 2018 package description should not be treated as a universal specification for every ZL1 1LE.
In practical terms, the choice is not between two engines. It is between a broadly capable ZL1 and a more specialized version of that car configured around circuit grip, aerodynamic load and track-oriented suspension hardware.

What is the difference between a ZL1 and ZL1 1LE?
Both cars are built around the Camaro ZL1. “1LE” identifies an Extreme Track Performance Package rather than a separate engine trim or powertrain family. Chevrolet’s 2024 ZL1 information lists the package as available on the ZL1, while GM TechLink’s July 2017 article documents the original 2018 package hardware.

A regular ZL1 is already engineered as a high-performance, track-capable Camaro. The ZL1 1LE adds a more focused chassis calibration, Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers, a larger aerodynamic package and a staggered 19-inch wheel-and-tire setup intended for maximum circuit grip. The engine output remains the ZL1’s output.

That distinction matters when reading advertisements. A seller may describe a car as a “1LE” because it has a wing or aftermarket wheels, but those visual parts do not prove that the complete factory package is present. Conversely, a genuine 1LE may have replacement tires, repaired aero or non-original wheels after track use. The option record and the hardware on the actual car have to agree.
Powertrain: the 1LE does not add horsepower
2024 ZL1 engine and transmissions
For the 2024 model year, Chevrolet rates the ZL1’s supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 at 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a 10-speed automatic is available. Those figures and transmission choices come from Chevrolet’s 2024 Camaro ZL1 fact sheet.
The 1LE package is applied to that ZL1 foundation. The package-specific technical material emphasizes suspension, aero, wheels and tires; it does not identify a different engine, supercharger or torque rating. Therefore, buying a 1LE is not a way to obtain a higher published horsepower number than a same-year ZL1.
In a direct comparison, acceleration potential is still governed by the same LT4 output, transmission, gearing, traction and driver inputs. The 1LE’s advantage is the way it can carry speed through a circuit, not a larger factory power figure. Any claim that a 1LE automatically has a more powerful engine should be treated as a modification claim requiring documentation.
Do not generalize transmission availability across years
Chevrolet’s 2024 transmission information should be read as a 2024 model-year specification. Older cars can have different ordering rules, equipment combinations or availability. When comparing used examples, check the window sticker, vehicle order information or build documentation for the exact year instead of assuming that every ZL1 or ZL1 1LE had the same transmission choices.
Cooling remains a ZL1 feature
Chevrolet’s 2024 sheet lists 11 heat exchangers for powertrain cooling on the ZL1. That establishes the base car’s cooling provision. The material available for this comparison does not document an additional 1LE cooling system, so a buyer should not assume that the package adds extra heat exchangers.
For track preparation, this means the standard ZL1 cooling specification should be verified rather than replaced by an assumed “1LE cooling upgrade.” Check the year-specific service information and inspect the car for damage or repairs, but do not describe extra factory coolers unless the build documentation supports that statement.
Suspension: Magnetic Ride Control versus DSSV dampers
Regular ZL1 arrangement
GM TechLink’s 2018 comparison describes the standard ZL1 suspension as using Magnetic Ride Control. Magnetic Ride Control is the baseline damper system against which the 1LE package is compared in that technical article.
ZL1 1LE arrangement
The documented 2018 ZL1 1LE replaces that arrangement with Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers. GM says the dampers are calibrated for the car’s weight and its tire package. This is a hardware and calibration change, not merely a software mode selected in the regular ZL1.
According to the July 2017 GM TechLink article, the DSSV dampers are 23 lb (10.5 kg) lighter than the Magnetic Ride Control system. That is a published GM technical figure, not an independent scale measurement. The same source describes the damper change as part of the package’s effort to give the car a more specialized track setup.

The weight figure is useful because it explains why the package is more than a cosmetic option. GM’s article also says the 1LE wheel-and-tire package weighs about 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) less per corner than the comparison setup. Those reductions are quoted for the documented specification; they should not be converted into a promise about every later build or every replacement part.

Do not infer a universal ride-quality result from the damper names alone. The cited documents establish the systems, their stated weight difference and their intended calibration; they do not provide a complete, independently measured street-ride comparison for every model year. A test drive remains important, especially if the car will spend more time on public roads than at a circuit.
Aerodynamics: the 1LE adds track-focused downforce hardware
Front aero
The 1LE-specific front package includes front air deflectors and dive planes. These parts manage airflow around the front of the car and are distinct from the ordinary ZL1 configuration described in GM’s package article. Inspect their mounting points and lower edges on a used car, because low front aero can be damaged by curbs, ramps and transport equipment.
Rear wing
A large rear wing is another visual and functional identifier. GM TechLink states that “the front aero package and rear wing of the ZL1 1LE produces additional downforce for better traction.” The wording describes the purpose of the package’s aero; it is not a promise of a particular downforce value at a particular speed.
A wing by itself does not create a complete 1LE. The package’s identity comes from the combination of dampers, aero, wheels and tires. A car wearing a similar-looking spoiler may still have regular ZL1 suspension and tires. Likewise, a replacement wing may be fitted to a genuine 1LE after the original part was damaged.
Recommended Free Tools
Chevrolet Accessories separately lists a visible-carbon-fiber ZL1 1LE-spec high-wing spoiler kit. That listing is useful for identifying an accessory option, but it is not a factory-package comparison or proof of the other 1LE components. Aerodynamic appearance should therefore be the starting point for an inspection, not the final verdict.
Wheels and tires: the most consequential hardware difference for grip
Documented 2018 fitment
GM’s 2018 technical description specifies lightweight forged aluminum wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R summer-only tires. The tire sizes are staggered: 305/30ZR19 at the front and 325/30ZR19 at the rear.
| Item | Camaro ZL1 | Camaro ZL1 1LE (documented 2018 specification) |
|---|---|---|
| Front tire | Exact comparison size is not stated in the cited package article; verify the model year and wheel option. | Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R, 305/30ZR19 |
| Rear tire | Exact comparison size is not stated in the cited package article; verify the model year and wheel option. | Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R, 325/30ZR19 |
| Wheel description | Standard ZL1 wheel specification varies by year and option. | Lightweight forged aluminum wheels |
| Seasonal designation | Check the sidewall and the specific vehicle’s equipment. | Summer-only tires |
Published footprint and grip figures
GM TechLink says the 1LE wheel-and-tire package has an approximately 10 percent larger footprint than the ZL1 comparison setup and weighs about 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) less per corner. It also reports 1.10g of maximum lateral grip for the documented 2018 tire setup. Those are figures reported by GM for that package and specification; they are not a new test conducted for this article and should not be applied automatically to later model years or different tires.
The approximately 10-percent footprint increase is a comparison of the package described by GM, not a guarantee that any tire with a wider nominal section will deliver the same result. Wheel width, compound, alignment, temperature and surface all affect performance. Keep the front and rear positions separate when reading specifications or ordering replacements.
Why front and rear sizes matter
The front and rear dimensions are different by design. Do not rotate these tires front to rear, order four tires in one size, or substitute a different width without confirming wheel width, clearance, load rating and the vehicle’s approved fitment. Chevrolet recommends GM-approved tire-and-wheel combinations.

For a used inspection, read every sidewall rather than relying on photographs or a seller’s description. Record the brand, complete size, speed and load markings, tread condition and any evidence of heat cycling or track wear. A 1LE with worn 3R tires may not deliver the grip implied by the original specification, and a non-approved replacement may change the car’s behavior or clearance.
Summer-only tires create a real ownership limitation
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tires are intended for warm-weather performance, not year-round driving. Chevrolet warns: “Do not use summer-only tires in winter conditions, as it would adversely affect vehicle safety, performance and durability.” The warning applies to conditions where temperatures and weather make the compound unsuitable, not merely to snow-covered roads.
For a car driven on public roads as well as at track events, plan a seasonal tire strategy. Verify the exact wheel and tire combination for your model year, store the alternate set correctly, and check local temperatures before driving. A 1LE equipped with its documented track tires may be the wrong configuration for cold-season commuting even though the powertrain itself remains fully road legal.

What the package changes—and what it does not establish
| Area | What the available documentation establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | The 1LE is built on the ZL1 and uses the ZL1 powertrain; Chevrolet lists 650 hp and 650 lb-ft for the 2024 LT4. | A unique 1LE engine tune or a higher output than the same-year ZL1. |
| Dampers | 2018 documentation identifies Multimatic DSSV dampers for the 1LE and Magnetic Ride Control for the standard ZL1 comparison. | That every model year used identical damper hardware. |
| Aero | The package adds front deflectors/dive planes and a large rear wing intended to produce additional downforce. | A universal downforce number or a guaranteed lap-time improvement. |
| Wheels and tires | The documented 2018 setup uses forged wheels and 305/30ZR19 front, 325/30ZR19 rear 3R tires. | That the same sizes, brands or compounds were fitted to every year. |
| Cooling | Chevrolet lists 11 heat exchangers for the 2024 ZL1. | An extra 1LE cooling system beyond the base ZL1. |
This separation helps prevent two common mistakes: treating a package as an engine upgrade, and treating one documented model year as a complete history. Use the table as a checklist of questions, then confirm the answers against the year and the actual vehicle.
Model-year caveat: verify the actual car
The strongest package-level technical description available here is GM TechLink’s July 2017 article about the 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE. Chevrolet’s 2024 fact sheet confirms that the ZL1 and the 1LE package remained available for 2024 and supplies the current powertrain figures cited above. Neither document is a complete year-by-year equipment history.
That matters when shopping for a used car. A listing may use “1LE” loosely, display aftermarket aero, or show replacement wheels that obscure the original specification. Treat the model year and installed parts as separate questions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Used-car verification checklist
- Confirm the model year from the vehicle identification number and title, not only the seller’s headline.
- Request the original window sticker, build sheet or option code documentation showing the Extreme Track Performance Package.
- Inspect the dampers and suspension hardware; do not identify a car as a 1LE solely from its rear wing.
- Read all four tire sidewalls and record the front and rear sizes, brand and compound.
- Check wheel part numbers and condition, especially if the car has aftermarket wheels or track-use damage.
- Look for evidence that the front aero pieces and wing are factory-equipment parts rather than later additions.
- Confirm transmission equipment and other options from the specific year’s documentation.
- Ask whether the car has been used in competition or frequent track sessions, and match that history against maintenance records and visible wear.
How to compare two listings step by step
- Start with the year. Put both cars in the same model-year context before comparing equipment. Do not use a 2018 tire or damper description as proof of a later car’s build.
- Verify the package. Find the original option documentation and confirm that it identifies the Extreme Track Performance Package.
- Separate factory parts from replacements. Photograph the dampers, wheels, tires, front aero and wing. A modified regular ZL1 can resemble a 1LE, while a genuine 1LE may have replacement track parts.
- Record tire fitment. Write down front and rear sizes separately. Confirm that the tires are approved for the wheels and that their seasonal rating suits your intended use.
- Check service history. Ask when dampers, tires, alignment components and aero pieces were replaced or repaired, particularly if the car has seen track days.
- Match the car to your driving. If daily road use in cold weather is unavoidable, the summer-only 3R setup requires a separate plan; if circuit performance is the priority, the 1LE’s dedicated hardware is the relevant advantage.
- Compare like with like. A manual ZL1 and an automatic ZL1 1LE are not an isolated package comparison. Note transmission, tire condition and modifications before drawing conclusions from a test drive.
Which one makes sense for your use?
| Your priority | More suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| High performance with a broader street-use focus | ZL1 | It already has the LT4 powertrain and Chevrolet describes the ZL1 as track capable, without requiring the 1LE’s specialized tire and aero package. |
| Frequent closed-course driving | ZL1 1LE | DSSV dampers, dedicated aero and the wider 3R tire package are the documented reasons to choose the package. |
| Cold-weather or year-round driving on one tire set | Evaluate the ZL1 configuration carefully | The documented 1LE tires are summer-only, and Chevrolet warns against winter use. |
| Buying a modified used car | Whichever car has verifiable documentation | Factory option records and installed hardware matter more than badges, spoilers or seller descriptions. |
This is a use-case framework, not a universal performance ranking. The available sources do not provide a complete, controlled lap-time comparison for every year, tire and transmission combination, so a single lap-time claim should not decide every purchase.
For a street-focused owner, the regular ZL1 can avoid the need to organize a second tire set while retaining the same documented 2024 power rating. For a driver who attends frequent track days, the value of the 1LE lies in receiving the suspension, aero and tire combination as a coordinated package instead of recreating it piecemeal. The right answer depends on how often those capabilities will actually be used.
Replacing tires or adding 1LE-style parts
Replacement tires
The most direct replacement path for the documented 2018 setup is the same Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R sizing: 305/30ZR19 front and 325/30ZR19 rear. Current retail availability was not established here. Before ordering, verify the exact model year, wheel specification, load and speed ratings, and Chevrolet-approved fitment. Never assume that a tire with the same nominal diameter fits a different wheel or suspension configuration.

High-wing accessory
Chevrolet Accessories lists a ZL1 1LE-spec visible-carbon-fiber high-wing spoiler kit, part number 84712513, for Camaro SS, ZL1 and LT1 models from 2018 through 2024. The listing is an accessory or retrofit option, not evidence that the complete 1LE package is installed. Installing the wing does not add DSSV dampers, the forged wheels or the 3R tires. Confirm current stock, installation requirements and compatibility directly from the official Chevrolet Accessories listing.
Because the accessory listing covers several Camaro models, verify fitment for the exact body style and model year before purchase. Also account for installation and any required supporting hardware; the listed part should not be presented as a low-cost substitute for the complete factory package.

Does the Camaro ZL1 1LE have a different engine?
No. It is a ZL1 with the Extreme Track Performance Package. Chevrolet’s 2024 material lists the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 at 650 hp and 650 lb-ft for the ZL1, and the package information does not identify a separate 1LE engine.
Is the ZL1 1LE faster because it has more horsepower?
There is no documented higher 1LE power rating in the cited material. Its intended advantage comes from DSSV dampers, downforce-producing aero and the wider 3R tire package, which are aimed at carrying speed and generating grip on a circuit.

What should I inspect on a used 1LE?
Confirm the option records, then inspect the DSSV dampers, forged wheels, staggered tire sizes, front aero and rear wing. Check for track wear, repairs and replacement parts, and verify the transmission from the vehicle’s own documentation.
Bottom line for a purchase decision
Choose the ZL1 1LE when you specifically want the ZL1’s 650-hp-class LT4 platform paired with the documented track hardware: DSSV dampers, additional aero and a wide, staggered summer tire setup. Choose a regular ZL1 when that specialized package is not central to your driving or when seasonal road use makes the 1LE tire arrangement impractical. For any used Camaro, verify the model year, option records and actual installed components before treating the badge or appearance as proof of 1LE specification.
