For 2024, Chevrolet’s ZL1 material identifies a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 rated at 650 hp and 650 lb-ft. The same material lists the six-speed manual as standard and a 10-speed automatic as available. Those are model-year specifications, so confirm the transmission in the exact car you are considering.
Cooling, tires and brakes aimed at repeated use
Chevrolet says the ZL1 has 11 heat exchangers for powertrain cooling. Its fact sheet also identifies summer-only Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, six-piston Brembo front calipers and 390 mm (15.35-inch) two-piece front rotors. Those parts explain the 1LE’s track orientation, but they also create ownership obligations: tire age and remaining tread, rotor condition and pad thickness should be treated as purchase-line items, not cosmetic details.
Chevrolet warns against using the summer-only tires in winter and calls for GM-approved wheel and tire combinations. A car that has been driven in cold weather on unsuitable tires may have suffered accelerated wear or damage, while a car stored for long periods may have aged tires despite low mileage.
What the Shelby GT500 brings
More documented peak output and a dual-clutch gearbox
Ford’s 2020 Mustang technical specifications list the Shelby GT500’s supercharged 5.2-liter V8 at 760 SAE hp at 7,300 rpm and 625 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. Ford pairs that engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The output figures are the clearest documented peak-power distinction between these cars, but they do not by themselves establish cornering speed, everyday drivability, reliability or value.

A dual-clutch transmission changes the buying decision as much as it changes shift speed. It suits a driver who wants rapid, repeatable gear changes without operating a clutch pedal. It is the wrong choice for someone who considers manual shifting central to the ownership experience, because the cited GT500 specification does not offer a manual transmission.
MagneRide and larger documented front discs
Ford’s 2022 technical specification lists MagneRide suspension, six-piston fixed aluminum Brembo front calipers and 420 mm by 40 mm vented front discs. These are manufacturer equipment descriptions, not a controlled comparison with the Camaro’s brakes or suspension. Confirm whether the particular GT500 has the options and model-year equipment shown in the seller’s listing.
Which is faster?
The GT500 has the higher documented peak horsepower figure, so it is the stronger paper choice for straight-line performance. That conclusion is limited to the published engine ratings. The available information does not provide a same-day, same-driver, same-tire head-to-head test, measured acceleration comparison or comparative lap time for a ZL1 1LE and a GT500.

On a circuit, acceleration is only one part of the result. Tire compound and temperature, brake wear, alignment, fuel load, driver consistency, ambient conditions, gearing, cooling performance and the precise package fitted to each car can change the outcome. A lightly modified or poorly maintained example can erase the advantage suggested by its factory specification. Treat “faster” as a use-case question: the GT500 is the documented power leader, while the ZL1 1LE is the more explicitly track-packaged manual option.

Which is better on a track?
Choose the Camaro when involvement and preparation matter most
The ZL1 1LE is the more natural fit if you want to select gears yourself, accept a firm track-biased setup and plan to manage consumables carefully. Its documented cooling hardware, summer-only tires and two-piece front rotors point toward repeated high-load use. That does not guarantee a lap-time win; it tells you what Chevrolet prioritized when specifying the package.
Before buying, inspect underbody panels, splitter and rocker areas for strike damage, look for uneven tire wear that suggests alignment problems, and ask for records of fluid changes, brake work and track-day use. A car used on a circuit is not automatically a bad purchase, but its price should reflect remaining consumable life and the quality of its maintenance.
Choose the GT500 when repeatable shifts and power are the priority
The GT500 makes more sense if you want maximum documented output and a transmission that handles shifting duties while you concentrate on braking points and lines. MagneRide and the listed large front brakes support the same broad mission, but the exact year, tire, wheel and option combination still matters.
Ask whether the car has been drag-raced, tracked, modified or tuned. Check for evidence of overheating, brake vibration, tire replacement and transmission servicing. A stock, well-documented car can be a better track starting point than a higher-spec example with unknown modifications.

Do not assume a transmission problem from one unusual shift event without a professional diagnosis, but do not dismiss warning lights or repeated harsh engagement either.

Neither source set provides a controlled ride, visibility, cabin-noise, seating or cargo comparison, so do not infer a universal street advantage from the brake or power figures. Evaluate those traits in the exact cars you can drive. Spend time in the driver’s seat, check sight lines at intersections, try the seating position with a helmet if track days are planned, and determine whether the suspension and tire package are acceptable on your local roads.
The Camaro’s summer-only tires require seasonal planning in climates with cold weather. The GT500’s tire and wheel specification should be verified from its build information rather than assumed from another model year. For either car, inspect the spare-tire situation, jack points and storage space before committing to a track-day setup; these practical details affect how easily you can carry tools, a helmet and replacement equipment.

Used-buying reality after the Camaro’s 2024 final year
Do not use launch prices as today’s value
No current used-market range, completed-sale sample, insurance quote or condition-adjusted depreciation comparison is established here. Do not treat an old launch MSRP or an asking price as market value. Compare several cars with the same model year, mileage band, transmission, options, modifications, accident history and geographic market, then verify completed sales where possible.
Collector’s Edition is a separate specification
Chevrolet’s June 5, 2023 announcement says the ZL1 Collector’s Edition was limited to 350 units. That limited run does not mean every ZL1 1LE is a Collector’s Edition. Confirm the edition through factory documentation, and do not pay a collector premium for a car that cannot substantiate the claim.
Condition can outweigh the badge
Prioritize a documented, unmodified or professionally modified car over a neglected example with a more desirable option list. Review title history, accident reports, ownership changes, service invoices, tire dates, brake measurements, alignment records and any evidence of track or drag use. Have an independent performance-car specialist inspect the cooling system, suspension, brakes, driveline, underside and electronic fault history before purchase.

A practical inspection checklist
- Verify identity. Match the VIN to the title, dashboard, door label and seller paperwork. Confirm model year, trim, transmission and the presence of the 1LE package or GT500 options advertised.
- Document equipment. Photograph wheels, tires, brake hardware, dampers, aero pieces and the engine bay. Compare those parts with the factory description for the relevant year.
- Measure consumables. Record tire brand, size, date code and tread; measure pad and rotor condition; inspect for heat checking, cracks, vibration or uneven wear.
- Review service history. Look for routine maintenance, cooling-system work, brake-fluid changes, clutch or transmission service and alignment documentation. Missing records should reduce confidence and negotiating leverage.
- Inspect modifications. Identify tunes, intake or exhaust changes, suspension parts, aero additions, wiring changes and non-factory wheels. Ask who installed each part and whether the original components are included.
- Complete a cold-start and hot drive. Check warning lights, idle quality, clutch or dual-clutch behavior, steering feel, brake vibration and cooling-system behavior before and after the drive.
- Get a specialist inspection. A pre-purchase inspection should include a scan for stored faults and a lift inspection, not just a visual walk-around.
- Price the next service. Obtain written estimates for tires, pads, rotors, fluids and any deferred work, then subtract those costs from the price you are willing to pay.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Camaro ZL1 1LE if these statements describe you
- You specifically want a six-speed manual.
- You value a factory package openly oriented toward track use.
- You are prepared to budget for summer-only tires, high-performance brakes and track-related wear.
- You have found a car with verifiable 1LE equipment, strong service records and no concerning structural or cooling-system damage.
Buy the Shelby GT500 if these statements describe you
- You want the higher documented peak engine output.
- You prefer a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and rapid automated shifts.
- You want MagneRide and the GT500’s documented brake hardware in the exact model year you are considering.
- You have found a stock or professionally modified example with clear maintenance and transmission records.
Walk away from either car when
- The VIN, trim or option story cannot be verified.
- The seller will not permit an independent inspection.
- Track or drag use is obvious but service records are missing.
- Tires, brakes, cooling components or suspension parts need immediate replacement and the price does not account for that work.
- The car has unexplained warning lights, title problems, structural repairs or undocumented tuning.
Optional ZL1 1LE-style aero
Chevrolet Accessories lists a visible-carbon-fiber ZL1 1LE-spec high-wing spoiler, GM part 84712513, for Camaro coupe SS, ZL1 and LT1 trims from model years 2018 through 2024. The front splitter and ground-effects kit are sold separately, and drilling may be required. It is an accessory, not proof that a car is a factory 1LE. Verify fitment, installation requirements and current availability with the selling dealer before ordering.
Bottom line
There is no defensible one-line performance winner from the published specifications alone. The Shelby GT500 is the choice for higher documented peak output and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Camaro ZL1 1LE is the choice for a factory track-focused package and a six-speed manual option. Because the Camaro ended after 2024, the purchase is fundamentally about finding the right used example: verify the build, inspect the consumables, price the immediate work and let condition and intended use decide between them.
