CATL’s evidence-backed target is small-scale or pilot production of all-solid-state battery cells in 2027—not full mass production for millions of cars. In June 2026, chairman Robin Zeng put current solid-state technology at level 4 on a 1-to-9 readiness scale, where level 9 represents a mature route suitable for mass production. CATL and contemporaneous reporting describe million-vehicle adoption as unlikely before 2030.
That makes “industry-leading” a statement about CATL’s technical position and more than a decade of research, not proof that production has started or that a 2,000-kilometre battery will enter mass production in 2027.

When will CATL’s solid-state battery be mass-produced?
CATL has not announced a firm mass-production date. Its stated 2027 milestone is a conditional small-scale or pilot-production target for all-solid-state cells, while large-volume vehicle deployment is broadly framed as a 2030-or-later prospect.
CarNewsChina reported that CATL’s market research put production at the scale of one million vehicles no earlier than 2030. CATL also rejected social-media claims that a 2,000-kilometre solid-state battery would enter mass production in 2027, saying commercialization and supply-chain development were still some distance away.

- Pilot or small-batch cell production rather than mature, high-volume series production.
- Process, yield, reliability and safety validation needed before automakers can commit to large orders.
- No published month for the start of the 2027 activity.

The 2024 level 7–8 roadmap and the level 4 assessment given in 2026 should not be treated as a guaranteed progression. They are statements made at different times by different CATL executives and may describe different development stages or interpretations of readiness. The later chairman’s assessment is the clearest current warning against reading 2027 as a finished commercial program.
What does CATL mean by “industry-leading”?
“Industry-leading” is CATL’s technical-positioning language. The company has said it has more than a decade of solid-state research experience and is maintaining industry-leading expertise, while also acknowledging that commercialization and supply-chain development remain unfinished.
CATL’s position, as reported by CarNewsChina in 2025, was: “Commercialisation (of solid-state batteries), including supply chain development, is still some distance away.” That qualification is essential. A company can lead peers in patents, engineering capability or pilot progress without having a qualified, economical product in series production.

Why is level 4 of 9 important?
Zeng’s scale separates technical promise from production readiness. He said, “If technology readiness is graded on a scale from one to nine, current solid-state battery technology is still at level four.” Level 9, in the same description, represents a mature pathway ready for mass production.
CATL identifies several gates between a laboratory cell and a mass-market battery:
- Technology readiness: the cell must deliver repeatable performance outside controlled demonstrations.
- Reliability and safety: packs need validation over automotive temperatures, vibration, abuse and long service life.
- Supply-chain sufficiency: electrolyte, electrode, separator and manufacturing inputs must be available at automotive volumes.
- Cost: expensive materials and low early yields can confine the technology to high-priced vehicles.
- Commercial acceptance: automakers and customers must accept the risk, warranty terms and production economics.
Which chemistry is CATL pursuing?
A March 2026 patent report described a sulfide-electrolyte direction for CATL. A patent can reveal a technical approach, but it does not establish a production date, factory capacity or a vehicle launch.

All-solid-state cells should also be kept separate from semi-solid products. Semi-solid designs retain some liquid or gel components and can reach market on a different schedule; they are not evidence that CATL’s all-solid-state roadmap has reached series production.
Which vehicles are likely to get the first cells?
Early applications are more plausibly premium vehicles or tightly controlled pilot programs than inexpensive, high-volume cars. Reporting on CATL’s comments links initial use to premium platforms, where automakers can absorb higher battery costs and limited early output. Broader adoption depends on achieving competitive cost as well as proving safety and durability.
How should CATL’s roadmap be compared with other solid-state programs?
The fairest comparison is to compare like-for-like milestones rather than headline years. BloombergNEF’s April 2025 roadmap placed CATL among several companies targeting all-solid-state pilot production in 2027, so the year alone does not establish leadership.

- Check readiness evidence: look for a stated readiness level, yield information, safety qualification and named customer validation.
- Identify the chemistry: sulfide, oxide, polymer and halide all-solid-state cells have different manufacturing challenges; semi-solid products are a separate category.
- Examine scale and economics: compare announced gigawatt-hour capacity, cost targets, supply-chain commitments and intended vehicle segment.
- Rate timing confidence: an independently documented operating line is stronger evidence than an undated corporate objective.
Using those tests prevents a pilot promise from being presented as a production achievement, whether the comparison involves CATL, established battery makers or start-ups.

Is CATL starting production in 2027?
It is targeting a limited start, subject to technical and commercial conditions. The available statements support “pilot” or “small-scale” production of all-solid-state cells, not a confirmed factory opening, a specific month, or retail availability in ordinary cars.
Readers should therefore treat 2027 as a development milestone that could demonstrate manufacturing feasibility. A separate decision will be required before CATL can supply millions of vehicles at a price automakers and buyers will accept.

Will CATL’s 2027 pilot batteries be available in consumer cars?
Not necessarily. Pilot cells may be used for validation fleets, engineering vehicles or limited premium programs, and the public statements do not identify a retail model or delivery date.

Why can a pilot line take years to become a mass-production plant?

Does a sulfide patent prove CATL will use sulfide cells in cars?
