It is a three-phase, wound-field synchronous machine: the stator carries the three-phase windings, while a rotor coil creates the magnetic field through slip rings and brushes.
To reverse its job, you must bypass the alternator’s regulator and rectifier, energize the rotor field with a separate current-limited DC supply, and feed the stator with controlled three-phase AC from a suitable inverter or motor controller. The result can be a useful experiment, go-kart motor, or low-cost project drive. It is not automatically a high-efficiency replacement for a purpose-built traction motor.

How an alternator becomes a motor
In normal operation, the pulley spins the rotor. The rotor’s claw poles create a rotating magnetic field, which induces three-phase AC in the stationary stator windings. A six-diode rectifier converts that AC to DC for the vehicle electrical system, while the voltage regulator controls rotor-field current to maintain charging voltage.

- A motor controller sends three-phase current into the stator.
- A separate DC supply energizes the rotor field coil through the brushes and slip rings.
- The stator’s rotating magnetic field pulls the wound rotor around, producing shaft torque.
The alternator’s B+ terminal, warning-lamp terminal, and sense terminal are not three-phase motor inputs. They are part of the charging-system wiring and should not be connected to a battery as though the alternator were a 12-volt DC motor.

What you need
| Part | Purpose | Important selection point |
|---|---|---|
| Three-phase motor controller or inverter | Converts battery DC into controlled three-phase AC | Must suit the battery voltage, current, pole count, and sensorless startup behavior |
| Current-limited DC field supply | Energizes the rotor winding | Use the field resistance and alternator data to establish a safe current; do not assume every rotor takes the same current |
| Modified alternator | Provides the stator, rotor, brushes, bearings, and housing | Inspect the specific model before deciding how to expose its phase and field connections |
| Fuse, contactor, wiring, and emergency disconnect | Protects the battery and makes testing controllable | Size them for the controller’s actual DC current and fault current |
| Rigid mount and rotating-part guard | Prevents movement and protects people from the pulley, fan, belt, and rotor | Do not perform a high-speed test with an unsecured alternator |
A cheap brushless electronic speed controller is not guaranteed to work. The controller needs three-phase brushless output and generally must operate sensorlessly because a stock alternator normally has no Hall sensors. It also needs a startup routine capable of handling this machine’s winding characteristics. Published conversions have used 36- and 48-volt supplies, while one go-kart project used a 48–72-volt controller rated at 1.5 kW continuous and 3 kW peak. Those are examples, not universal alternator specifications.
Modify the alternator carefully
Alternator construction varies by manufacturer and model. Before cutting wires, obtain the service information for the exact unit and identify the stator phase connections, rotor brushes, regulator, and rectifier.
- Remove the alternator from service and inspect it. Check the bearings, slip rings, brushes, rotor clearance, pulley, fan, and case. A worn charging unit is a poor starting point for a high-speed motor.
- Disconnect the regulator. The regulator is designed to vary field current in response to charging voltage. It is not a suitable motor-drive field controller for this conversion.
- Disconnect the rectifier from the stator. The motor controller must connect directly to the three stator phases. Leaving the factory diode bridge in the motor-current path can create an incorrect circuit and damage components.
- Bring out three stator-phase leads. Use appropriately sized, insulated wires and verify with the wiring diagram or by tracing the windings. Do not assume the stator is delta-connected or wye-connected: both descriptions appear in references for different alternator designs.
- Bring out the two field leads. They should connect directly to the two brushes and therefore to the rotor field winding, with the regulator removed or electrically bypassed.
- Secure the rear assembly. On some designs, the rectifier or related hardware contributes mechanical support. Removing it may require a bracket or other safe replacement support.
- Check isolation. The three stator phases must be isolated from the case, and neither brush should be shorted to the housing. Route all new wires away from the rotating rotor, fan, pulley, and belt.
The exact stator arrangement matters electrically, but it does not change the basic conversion method. Never connect the controller to arbitrary terminals simply because they are convenient or labeled on the original charging plug.

The rotor does not contain permanent magnets. Without field current, the stator controller may produce little useful torque and may have difficulty detecting rotor position. Connect a separate, current-limited DC supply across the two brush terminals after disconnecting the regulator.

I = V / R
where I is field current, V is field-supply voltage, and R is the measured cold field resistance. This is only a starting calculation because the winding resistance rises as it heats. Increase field current gradually while monitoring current and rotor temperature. One tested alternator used approximately 2–3 amps of field current, but that figure should not be copied to a different model without measurement.
The field supply consumes power continuously. That is one reason a converted alternator generally loses to a permanent-magnet motor of similar size: it has rotor copper loss as well as stator copper loss, iron loss, bearing loss, fan loss, inverter loss, and brush/slip-ring loss.
Wire the motor controller
Connect the controller’s three motor outputs to the three exposed stator phases. Connect the controller’s battery input to a suitable fused battery pack, not to the alternator’s B+ terminal. Connect the field supply separately and provide a way to turn it off independently.
Start with a low controller current limit. If the motor rotates in the wrong direction, follow the controller’s reverse-input procedure if it has one. On a conventional three-phase machine, exchanging any two phase connections reverses the direction of the rotating field, although the controller’s own commutation and reverse strategy still determine the final result.
Do not use the alternator’s original regulator to control the field unless you have specifically redesigned and tested the circuit for motor operation. It is a generator voltage regulator, not a coordinated motor field controller.

Why startup is often the hardest part
A sensorless controller estimates rotor position from back electromotive force. At zero speed there is little or no back EMF to measure, and a wound-field alternator can be particularly awkward if the field is weak, the phase sequence is wrong, or the load has high breakaway torque.
Recommended Free Tools
A controller that starts a normal sensorless permanent-magnet BLDC motor may simply twitch, stall, draw excessive current, or repeatedly lose synchronization when connected to an alternator. Startup settings and open-loop ramp behavior matter. Some controllers only enter closed-loop operation after reaching a minimum speed; one documented project found a controller that did not close the loop until roughly 100 RPM, which was unsuitable for its vehicle application.
For a first test:
- Leave the shaft unloaded.
- Set the controller to its lowest practical current limit.
- Apply a small field current.
- Command a slow startup and watch for jerking, stalled rotation, or rapidly rising current.
- Stop immediately if the controller faults, the brushes spark heavily, or the rotor does not accelerate normally.
A position sensor can make control more predictable, but adding one is a substantial mechanical and electrical modification. It is not a substitute for choosing a controller that can handle the alternator’s winding and pole configuration.
Bench-test procedure
- Mount the alternator to a rigid bench fixture. Do not hold it by hand or rely on a loose automotive bracket.
- Install a guard around the pulley, fan, belt, and any exposed rotating adapter.
- Turn the shaft by hand and listen for bearing roughness or rotor rubbing.
- Verify that the regulator and rectifier are disconnected from the motor circuit.
- Confirm field-winding continuity and case isolation with a meter.
- Confirm that each stator phase is isolated from the housing and correctly identified.
- Use a current-limited field supply and record the field current.
- Connect the stator phases to the controller with a low battery-current limit.
- Run the unloaded alternator briefly and monitor controller current, field current, brush sparking, vibration, and temperature.
- Add mechanical load in small increments while measuring shaft speed and electrical input power.
A clamp meter on the battery side is useful, but remember that battery-side current is not the same as phase current. For meaningful efficiency measurements, record DC bus voltage and current, field voltage and current, shaft speed, and mechanical torque. A watt rating printed on the alternator does not provide the motor’s torque or horsepower.
Speed, torque, and power limitations
Automotive alternators are designed to spin much faster than the engine crankshaft. A drive ratio around 2.95:1 is a published example, and some aftermarket guidance warns not to exceed 18,000 RPM. The safe maximum is model-specific. Obtain it from the alternator manufacturer or service data rather than treating 18,000 RPM as a universal limit.

Conversely, an alternator is not optimized for strong low-speed motor torque. Its claw-pole rotor has magnetic leakage and saturation issues, and the machine was designed primarily as an inexpensive high-speed generator. The pulley and internal fan may also be unsuitable for the speed, direction, or belt loads of a vehicle project.
Do not turn a “100-amp alternator” label into a motor-power calculation. The 100-amp figure describes generator output under specified voltage, speed, temperature, and test conditions. It does not mean the converted machine is a 1,200-watt motor, nor does it define its continuous motor torque.
One independently reported conversion produced 2.4 horsepower and 5.1 lb-ft at 2,500 RPM, using an 84-volt controller input and a particular alternator and field setup. Its reported electrical-input-to-net-shaft-output efficiency was 80 percent. That is a test result for that build, not a typical rating for every automotive alternator.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cooling and mechanical safety
Heat can build in the stator, rotor field winding, brushes, slip rings, bearings, and controller. The original alternator fan may not provide enough airflow when the machine is enclosed, run continuously, or operated in a different direction. Forced-air cooling is sensible for sustained use, along with temperature monitoring on the stator and housing.

Common mistakes
| Claim or shortcut | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| “Connect 12 volts to the alternator and it becomes a motor.” | The stator needs controlled three-phase AC, and the rotor field needs separate DC excitation. |
| “It is a 12-volt motor.” | 12 volts describes the vehicle charging system. The inverter bus can be substantially higher or lower, subject to the controller and winding limits. |
| “Every alternator uses a delta stator.” | Winding arrangements vary. Identify the actual phase connections for the specific alternator. |
| “The regulator can stay connected.” | The regulator was designed for generator voltage control and should normally be removed from the motor field circuit. |
| “The rectifier makes it a DC motor.” | The rectifier only converts generated AC to DC. The underlying machine remains a three-phase synchronous machine. |
| “Brushless means highly efficient.” | The stator path is brushless, but the rotor field still uses brushes and consumes electrical power. |
| “Any e-bike ESC will work.” | Sensorless startup, current limits, voltage range, commutation behavior, pole count, and field excitation all have to be compatible. |
FAQ
Can I run a car alternator as a motor using its B+ terminal?
No. B+ is the rectified DC output used by the vehicle charging system. Motor operation requires direct access to the three stator phases, a three-phase inverter, and separate DC current through the rotor field winding.
How much field current does an alternator motor need?
There is no universal value. Measure the rotor resistance, begin with a current-limited supply, and increase the current cautiously while checking temperature. One tested unit used about 2–3 amps, but another alternator may require a different amount.
Will a normal sensorless BLDC controller start an alternator?
Not necessarily. The controller must handle the alternator’s winding and pole configuration, and its startup routine must work without Hall sensors. Some controllers stall or fail to synchronize at low speed, especially under load.
Is an alternator a good electric-car traction motor?
Usually not as a general-purpose choice. It can be inexpensive and educational, but it is optimized for high-speed generation, wastes power in its rotor field, retains brushes and slip rings, and may have modest efficiency and poor low-speed torque compared with a purpose-built motor.
The Bottom Line
A car alternator can be converted into a working electric motor, but the conversion is an electrical redesign rather than a simple 12-volt wiring trick. Bypass the regulator and rectifier, identify the real three stator phases, energize the rotor field through a current-limited supply, and use a compatible three-phase controller. Expect startup and cooling challenges, keep the speed within the alternator’s documented limit, and treat the result as a project motor unless testing proves it suits the intended load.
