Why does wool get mentioned in fuel-safety advice?
Static electricity can ignite gasoline vapors, according to the Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI). Wool appears in a separate setting: a 2017 report published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) advises fuel-sampling personnel to wear anti-static materials such as cotton and avoid wool and synthetics. It explains that movement between materials can build static charges.
That is occupational personal protective equipment guidance for people working around fuel dispensers and storage tanks. It is not a study of motorists wearing sweaters while pumping gas, and it does not establish that a wool sweater alone makes consumer refueling unsafe.
What should motorists do while refueling?
PEI’s Stop Static campaign gives this public-facing advice: “Turn off engine. Don’t smoke. Never re-enter your vehicle while refueling.” Getting back into a vehicle can contribute to static buildup; avoid re-entering while the nozzle is in use.

PEI says it began investigating refueling fires in the mid-1990s and that almost 200 incidents have been reported that appear related to static discharge. That cumulative figure, on PEI’s page published May 20, 2022, is not a risk rate per fill-up, does not mean every case was conclusively attributed to static, and is not a count of fires involving wool clothing.
Do you need to change clothes or use an anti-static product?
The reviewed sources do not establish that a motorist must change out of a wool sweater, choose cotton, or buy anti-static clothing, footwear, grounding devices, or fueling accessories before using a retail pump. NIST’s clothing advice concerns professional field work; PEI’s consumer campaign emphasizes refueling behavior instead.

The Energy Institute’s fourth edition of Model Code of Safe Practice Part 21, published in June 2024, describes static-charge generation and includes operational guidance for filling-station operations and PPE selection. Its public description does not provide a consumer rule about sweaters. PEI’s 2024 RP500 is an inspection and maintenance manual for motor-fuel dispensing equipment, not a clothing guide for motorists.
What about using a phone at the pump?
PEI says it has not documented a gasoline-pump fire caused by a cellular telephone, while still advising motorists not to use devices in ways that distract them during fueling. Its cited statement is specific to PEI’s documented cases; it should not be read as proof that every possible phone-related hazard is impossible.

Soak for 5 to 10 minutes with wool detergent, gently squeeze the suds out (do not rub, twist, or wring), and rinse in clear, cold water. Pull carefully to shape. Always dry flat and never put in a tumble drier. The Golden Rule for caring for a wool garment is to wash it as seldom as possible and air frequently.
What is established—and what is not?
- Established: Static discharge can ignite gasoline vapors, and PEI recommends turning off the engine, not smoking, and not re-entering the vehicle while refueling.
- Not established by these sources: That a wool sweater by itself makes ordinary consumer refueling unsafe, or that motorists must avoid wool at retail pumps.
- Context for the wool warning: NIST-published occupational PPE advice for fuel-sampling personnel working around fuel equipment.
The sources reviewed do not include a consumer-specific controlled study comparing sweater materials during retail refueling, a wool-related incident statistic, or direct regulator advice requiring motorists to avoid wool. That limits what can be claimed; it does not prove that risk is zero.
