An open recall means a safety campaign affecting that specific vehicle has not been completed. Whether you may drive the Forester depends on the campaign notice: some recalls require owners to stop driving, park outdoors, avoid a particular seat, or take another immediate precaution; others do not include an immediate driving prohibition. Check the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, read the exact Subaru and federal notice, and follow its instructions before using the vehicle.
This guidance is based on U.S. Subaru and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) information. Without your VIN and campaign number, nobody can determine whether your particular Forester is safe to drive or whether its recall is still open.

What an “open recall” means for a Forester
A recall is open when the manufacturer has identified a safety-related defect and the required remedy has not yet been recorded as completed for that vehicle. The word open does not, by itself, describe the severity of the defect or impose one universal driving rule.
Subaru determines recall eligibility by vehicle identification number (VIN), not by the Forester name or model year alone. Two Foresters of the same year can have different campaign histories, equipment, production dates, or repair status. A generic description found online cannot replace the notice tied to your VIN.

NHTSA advises owners to follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance, including any “do not drive” or “park outside” warning. Its recall system highlights certain urgent campaigns, but the campaign notice remains the controlling source for the specific interim precaution.
Decide from the campaign instruction, not the recall label

If the wording is unclear, do not guess. Call a Subaru retailer with the VIN and ask the service department to explain the campaign’s interim operating instruction.
How to check a Subaru Forester recall by VIN
1. Find the 17-character VIN
The VIN is a 17-character sequence of letters and numbers. Common locations include the driver-side dashboard visible through the windshield, the driver-door or door-jamb label, the registration, insurance documents, and the title. Enter the characters exactly; a single error can return the wrong vehicle or no result.

Open Subaru of America’s Vehicle Recalls tool and enter the complete VIN. Subaru’s customer self-service guidance directs owners to this VIN-specific lookup and then to a Subaru retailer for completion. The Subaru page displayed an update time of October 9, 2026, and notes that its results do not include recalls issued before February 1998.

A missing result does not prove that a vehicle has never had a campaign. It may mean the VIN was entered incorrectly, the campaign predates the lookup’s coverage, the issue is not a safety recall, or the record has another status. Ask a retailer to verify any uncertainty.
3. Check NHTSA as a second official source
NHTSA’s recall lookup accepts either a VIN or a license plate. The VIN search is more vehicle-specific; a plate search can help when the VIN is temporarily unavailable. NHTSA recommends checking periodically because new campaigns can be announced after a previous search.
NHTSA’s system can flag urgent “do not drive” and fire-risk recalls. Treat an urgent flag as a reason to stop and read the full campaign instruction, not as a substitute for the notice itself.

Write down the recall number, defect description, remedy status, and any interim warning. If the result shows that the recall was completed, retain the confirmation for your records. If it says parts are unavailable or the remedy is pending, ask the retailer what Subaru’s current instruction is while you wait.

What to do when the notice says not to drive
A “do not drive” instruction takes priority over convenience, distance, or the fact that the Forester currently feels normal. Park it as directed and contact a Subaru retailer. Ask whether Subaru will arrange towing or whether the retailer has a specific process for vehicles that cannot be driven safely.
Do not drive to the dealership merely because it is the closest way to obtain service. If the notice prohibits driving, tell the service adviser that the vehicle is subject to that restriction and request instructions for transport. Keep passengers away from any hazard identified in the notice.
When the notice allows driving but gives a precaution
Takata passenger-airbag example
For a Forester affected by Subaru’s Takata passenger-side front-airbag inflator recall, Subaru recommends that occupants not use the front passenger seat until the repair is completed. That is a seat-specific precaution. It does not establish a blanket rule for every Forester recall, every airbag campaign, or every Subaru vehicle.
If your notice contains a similar restriction, follow it exactly: leave the specified seat empty, disable the stated feature if instructed, or observe the stated distance, parking, or loading limitation. Do not broaden a narrow instruction into your own test of whether the vehicle “seems safe.”

Park-outside and fire-risk warnings
Some campaigns warn that a defect could cause a fire while the vehicle is parked. If the notice says to park outdoors, leave the Forester outside and away from buildings or other exposures until repaired. Do not store it in a garage simply because it is not being driven. Ask the retailer where it should remain while awaiting parts.
Schedule the repair: recall remedies are free
NHTSA states that safety-recall repairs are free at the vehicle manufacturer’s dealership. Subaru directs owners to schedule open recalls with a Subaru retailer. The free remedy covers the recall repair described in the campaign; it does not automatically cover unrelated maintenance, collision damage, wear items, or a separate diagnostic problem.
- Call a Subaru retailer’s service department and provide the VIN and recall number.
- Tell the adviser about any “do not drive,” fire-risk, passenger-seat, or other interim instruction.
- Ask whether the remedy parts are in stock and how long the repair is expected to take.
- Confirm whether the vehicle should be driven in, towed, or left parked until the appointment.
- At pickup, obtain paperwork showing the campaign was completed and ask when the recall record should update.
If one retailer cannot schedule the work promptly, contact another authorized Subaru retailer. Keep following the original safety instruction while you arrange service.

What an open recall does—and does not—tell you
- It does tell you: a manufacturer safety campaign remains associated with the VIN and its remedy has not been recorded as complete.
- It does not tell you: that the Forester will certainly fail, that driving is automatically forbidden, or that driving is automatically safe.
- It does not replace the notice: a social-media post, forum comment, generic model-year list, or parts advertisement cannot establish your campaign’s interim instruction.
- It does not require a consumer product: an OBD scanner or accessory cannot determine the official campaign instruction or perform the free remedy.
If the lookup is confusing or shows no remedy
The VIN returns no result
Re-enter all 17 characters, compare the number with the vehicle itself, and try NHTSA’s VIN or license-plate lookup. Then ask a Subaru retailer to verify the record. Subaru’s tool excludes recalls issued before February 1998, so an older campaign may require a different confirmation route.

The result says parts are unavailable
Ask the retailer what Subaru recommends during the wait. The safe interim action can vary by campaign: continued use, a seat restriction, outdoor parking, or no driving. Do not infer the answer from the fact that the appointment is delayed.
The vehicle was bought used
Recall obligations follow the vehicle, not the first owner. Run the VIN yourself and ask the retailer to confirm completion status. Do not rely only on a seller’s verbal assurance or a maintenance invoice that does not identify the recall campaign.
The dashboard has a warning light
A warning light can indicate an unrelated mechanical or emissions fault, while a recall can exist without any warning light. Report both issues to the service department. The recall lookup and the vehicle’s diagnostic system answer different questions.
Why checking promptly matters
NHTSA reported 997 vehicle and equipment safety recalls affecting more than 29 million vehicles in the United States in 2025, in a consumer alert published March 3, 2026. The scale explains why an open-recall search should be routine rather than a one-time check after buying a car.
In a March 2025 NHTSA statement, Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said: “Checking for recalls on your vehicle could save your loved ones’ lives or your own.” The practical implication is simple: identify the campaign, follow its interim warning, and obtain the remedy instead of waiting for a symptom.
Geography and timing
The procedures and free-repair statement above apply to U.S. Subaru and NHTSA guidance. Owners in another country should use that country’s vehicle-safety authority and contact a local Subaru representative, because campaign coverage, lookup tools, retailer obligations, and instructions can differ.
Recall data changes. A Forester that has no open campaign today can be included in a later campaign, and a repaired vehicle’s status can take time to update. NHTSA recommends periodic checking; repeat the VIN search after purchasing the vehicle and whenever Subaru or NHTSA announces a relevant campaign.
