A convertible can be driven in winter when it is in good condition, fitted with tires suited to the roads, and used within the limits in its owner’s manual. The soft top is not, by itself, a reason to park the car for the season. Snow and ice on the road affect grip, while snow or ice on the roof can make operating some tops unsafe or damaging.
Is a convertible suitable for winter driving?
It can be. BMW USA says its fabric-soft-top convertibles can be driven in winter, while warning owners not to open a top covered in snow or ice. That is manufacturer guidance for BMW vehicles, not a guarantee about every make and model. Check the manual for your exact car before operating its roof in cold weather.
The more immediate safety issue is traction. Snow, sleet, and ice make roads hazardous for every type of vehicle. In 2023, NHTSA reported 101,390 estimated police-reported traffic crashes in snow or sleet conditions in the United States, including 320 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,293 injury crashes. These figures cover all vehicle types; they do not compare convertibles with hardtops.
Choose tires for the roads you will drive
Tires are central to winter readiness. NHTSA says winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow, while summer tires are not designed for below-freezing temperatures, snow, or ice. Choose tires appropriate to your local conditions and the vehicle’s approved specifications. Check the owner’s manual and tire placard for the correct size and requirements before buying.

Check tread and tire condition, and set pressure to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire. NHTSA’s guidance on winter driving and tire safety is available at NHTSA winter driving safety and NHTSA tire safety.
Know when your specific soft top can be operated
Cold-weather rules are not universal. Some manufacturers warn against operating a snow-covered or iced-up roof; others give a temperature limit for opening or closing it. Follow the instructions for your car and model year rather than applying another vehicle’s rule.

- BMW: BMW USA says not to open a snow-covered or iced-up top because doing so may cause damage or functional limitations. See its convertible FAQ.
- 2023 Mazda MX-5: The owner’s manual says not to open or close the soft top at or below 5°C (41°F), and recommends snow tires when driving on snow- or ice-covered roads. This threshold is specific to that model and year. See the 2023 MX-5 owner’s manual.
- 2011–2015 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible: A 2015 GM bulletin describes ice that can accumulate in the water-management bag after wet weather and freezing temperatures, potentially contacting and damaging the mechanism. It directs owners not to operate the top until the ice melts. This bulletin applies to the specified Camaro model years; its instructions should not be transferred to other cars. If snow or ice has collected on the roof, remove it carefully as directed by your vehicle’s manual, and do not force the mechanism. If the manual gives a temperature restriction, follow it even if the top appears clear.
Prepare the car and plan for winter conditions
Before relying on a convertible through winter, check the systems that support visibility, starting, and emergency readiness. NHTSA recommends ensuring lights, wipers, and defrosters work; filling the washer reservoir with winter fluid; and carrying supplies that can help if a trip is delayed or the car becomes stranded.

- Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, along with tread and overall condition.
- Confirm that the headlights and other lights, wipers, and front and rear defrosters work properly.
- Use washer fluid rated for winter conditions.
- Carry an ice scraper, shovel, jumper cables, flashlight, blankets, phone charger, water, food, and any necessary medicine.
Adjust your driving to the conditions: slow down, leave more distance between you and the vehicle ahead, and avoid unnecessary trips when roads are especially hazardous. NHTSA’s winter-driving guidance is at nhtsa.gov/winter-driving-safety.

Winter use is a practical choice, not an obligation. Consider another vehicle or postpone the trip if your tires are unsuitable, visibility or defrosting systems are not working, the forecast or road conditions exceed your comfort level, or you cannot follow the soft-top instructions for your car. A convertible’s winter crash performance cannot be ranked against a hardtop on the evidence cited here; what matters for a particular trip is the vehicle’s condition, equipment, and the conditions you face.
