Don’t pry it off based on generic advice. An “AIRBAG” label signals that the trim is associated with an airbag or its deployment area, but it doesn’t establish whether the airbag sits directly behind that surface or whether owner removal is safe. The right procedure depends on your vehicle and the exact panel. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific vehicle, or have a qualified technician do the work.
Why an airbag label matters
Curtain airbags can run along the roof rails above the doors, close to pillar and headliner trim. Hyundai’s 2025 owner guidance, for example, identifies front and rear pillars as areas around which objects should not be attached because airbags inflate there. That is guidance for the vehicles and market covered by that manual, not a universal description of every vehicle’s layout. Hyundai’s 2025 owner manual
The label alone cannot tell you whether the airbag module is directly behind the panel, whether the panel can be removed by an owner, or how its clips and restraint-system components must be handled. Treat it as a warning to verify the procedure, not as permission to remove the trim.
What to do before touching the trim
- Identify the vehicle and panel. Note the year, make, model, market, and exact trim location—such as the front A-pillar or a rear roof-side panel. Procedures can differ even between vehicles from the same manufacturer.
- Find the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact vehicle and task. Use the owner information or the applicable service procedure, including any restraint-system (SRS) precautions it specifies. Do not substitute instructions for another make, model, or year.
- Stop and use a qualified technician if you cannot confirm the procedure. This is especially prudent when the panel is beside or over a curtain-airbag route, or when you are unsure how its retainers or SRS components are handled.
NHTSA advises contacting the vehicle manufacturer about the proper procedure. Its October 6, 1993 interpretation cautions that “Improper removal of an air bag could cause it to deploy and injure the person.” NHTSA interpretation, October 6, 1993

Why generic removal steps are unsafe to copy
Airbag-related trim work is vehicle- and task-specific. A Tesla service procedure for 2015–2020 Model X vehicles, for example, includes preliminary trim removal and SRS-related precautions for curtain-airbag work. Those instructions show why a procedure for one vehicle cannot stand in for the correct instructions for another. Tesla Model X service procedure
For the same reason, there is no safe universal battery-disconnection sequence or waiting time to give for an unidentified vehicle. Follow the exact manufacturer procedure rather than relying on a generic video or a remembered step.

What not to do
- Do not pry, force, drill, or cut the trim before confirming the vehicle-specific procedure.
- Do not attach objects in or around a stated airbag inflation area.
- Do not assume a plastic trim tool makes the work safe. A manufacturer bulletin hosted by NHTSA specifies such a tool for one particular A-pillar procedure; that does not make it suitable for every vehicle or protect against airbag-related hazards.
