Potentially: some direct tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) send wireless signals with persistent sensor identifiers, which can let an observer link repeat sightings and infer vehicle movement patterns. A 2026 study reports collecting real-world signals and observing at least 20,000 cars, but that does not mean every car was identified, tracked to its owner, or is vulnerable in the same way.
What tire pressure sensors transmit
Direct TPMS uses sensors in the tires to send information wirelessly to the vehicle. In the systems described by a 2017 study, transmissions included pressure and temperature readings as well as a static, unique identifier. The identifier matters for privacy: even when a signal does not contain a driver’s name, a persistent code can help an observer recognize the same sensor again. The 2017 study also examined radio propagation across three vehicle classes, underscoring that implementations and signal behavior should not be assumed identical across vehicles. Sterne et al., Transportation Research Record, 2017.

How repeated signals can reveal movement
If a sensor broadcasts an identifier that stays the same, receivers at different places or times may be able to associate repeated transmissions. Enough sightings can suggest that a vehicle passed a particular location or followed a recurring route. The privacy-relevant information is therefore not limited to tire pressure or temperature; the identifier’s persistence can make otherwise routine sensor messages linkable.
In its 2026 summary, armasuisse Science and Technology’s Cyber-Defence Campus says researchers used signal analysis to associate signals from different tires with vehicles and identify recurring movement patterns. That describes a way to infer patterns from collected signals. It does not establish that a driver’s name is broadcast over the air. armasuisse Science and Technology, Cyber-Defence Campus, 2026.

What the 2026 study measured—and what it did not
The authors of Can’t Hide Your Stride: Inferring Car Movement Patterns from Passive TPMS Measurements report a ten-week measurement campaign that included 12 verified cars and observed at least 20,000 cars. They also report receiver equipment costing as little as $100 per receiver and say a malicious actor could scale collection to several thousand cars. These are distinct claims: the observed count is not proof that all those cars were successfully tracked, linked to known identities, or monitored across a complete route. The several-thousand figure is a possible collection scale described by the authors, not the number they say they tracked. University of Luxembourg ORBilu repository record, 2026.
The $100 figure refers to receiver equipment cost as reported by the study authors; it is not a service price or a recommendation for consumers. The available study abstract and official summary do not provide a model-by-model list of affected vehicles, nor do they show that every make and model exposes identical data.

Does this affect every car?
No such conclusion is established by these sources. The concern applies to systems whose transmissions can be received and whose identifiers remain usable for linking observations. The 2026 work demonstrates a measurement capability, but its summary does not identify every vehicle model or prove universal vulnerability. Whether a particular car exposes signals in a way that enables this kind of observation cannot be determined from the cited summaries alone.
Earlier studies show that TPMS privacy and security have been investigated for years, but their findings are specific to the vehicles and systems they evaluated:

- 2010: Rouf et al. reported roughly 40-meter eavesdropping, static 32-bit identifiers, and remote spoofing in the systems studied. Those results are historical study findings, not a guarantee about current vehicles. USENIX Security Symposium paper, 2010.
- 2021: Vaszary et al. demonstrated tracking uniquely identifiable sensors up to 40 meters using an off-the-shelf software-defined radio and proposed identifier randomization. This is a study-specific result and a system-design proposal, not evidence of an owner-installed fix. Vaszary et al., 2021.
These range measurements come from separate experiments and should not be treated as the range of the 2026 field campaign.

The cited sources do not establish a safe consumer setting, retrofit, or accessory that prevents privacy-related collection. They discuss research approaches such as changing identifiers at the system-design level, not a turnkey change owners can make. TPMS is a safety system; blocking its signals or disabling it could interfere with its intended function. The available evidence does not support buying a blocker or disabling the system as a privacy remedy.
