It arrived before the S-10 ZR2, whose later package added more extensive engineering changes. Baja can reasonably be described as an early expression of the compact off-road truck idea Chevrolet later formalized with ZR2—but GM’s available documents do not call it ZR2’s official predecessor.
What is an S-10 Baja?
The Baja was a package for the Chevrolet S-10 pickup, not a wholly separate truck model. General Motors’ 1989 S-10 order guide identifies the S-10 Baja Pickup and documents selectable equipment for it. Its showroom identity combined Baja-themed appearance features, including off-road lighting and roll-bar/grille-guard styling, with functional protective and suspension hardware.

That distinction matters: the order guide lists package components and options, rather than establishing that every Baja left the factory with an identical set of mechanical equipment. The best description is a factory 4×4 package whose configuration depended on selected equipment.

What came in the Baja package?
GM’s 1989 order guide specifies two core equipment groups: protective shields and suspension hardware. It also lists tire, engine, transmission, and payload choices.

Selectable configuration and period prices
The same 1989 guide lists the following equipment and prices. These are historical GM option prices, not current market values.
| Item | What GM’s 1989 guide states | Period option price |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3-liter EFI V6 | Optional engine; the 2.8-liter EFI V6 was the standard engine choice. | $255 |
| Shield package | Transfer-case, front-differential, fuel-tank, and steering-linkage protection. | $126 |
| Suspension package | Bilstein gas shocks and the listed suspension and related hardware. | $160 |
| P235/75R-15 white-lettered on/off-road tires | Selectable tire option. | $391 |
The guide also lists a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission and a 1,500-pound payload option. Those choices help explain why “Baja” should not be treated as proof that every truck had exactly the same drivetrain or equipment.

Was the S-10 Baja the original ZR2?
Not in the strict, documented sense of an officially named predecessor. GM’s 1989 order guide establishes that the Baja came earlier and bundled appearance with selectable off-road protection and suspension equipment. Later GM material describes ZR2 as a distinct wide-stance sport-performance package. The historical link is therefore a useful interpretation: Baja anticipated the compact off-road S-10 formula, while ZR2 made that formula a more comprehensively engineered specification.

GM’s 2000 S-10 restoration kit states that the ZR2 package had a track 100 mm wider and ride height 75 mm higher than the standard 4×4 model. The kit also specifies a special wider-track frame, heavy-duty front-drive components, an 8.5-inch rear ring gear with larger bearings and axle shafts, a rear axle track bar, 3.73:1 rear gearing, 46 mm Bilstein high-pressure gas shocks, and 31 x 10.5R-15 tires. GM’s 1997 kit likewise describes a wider track, nearly three inches of extra height, Bilstein shocks, heavy-duty axles, underbody shields, and 31-inch tires.

How is a Baja different from a ZR2?
The clearest contrast is between Baja’s mix of appearance and selectable equipment and ZR2’s documented changes to stance, frame, and drivetrain hardware. The figures below come from GM’s 1989 Baja order guide and 2000 ZR2 restoration kit; they describe those documented configurations, not every S-10 built across the full run of either package.
| Comparison | 1989 S-10 Baja | S-10 ZR2 in GM’s 2000 kit |
|---|---|---|
| Showroom purpose | Baja-themed appearance paired with selectable protection and suspension equipment. | Wide-stance sport-performance package. |
| Stance | No comparable Baja track-width or ride-height figure is stated in the 1989 guide. | 100 mm wider track and 75 mm higher ride height than the standard 4×4. |
| Chassis and axle changes | Skid plates and suspension hardware are listed; a dedicated wider-track frame or the ZR2 axle changes are not specified. | Special wider-track frame, heavy-duty front-drive components, and revised rear-axle hardware, including an 8.5-inch ring gear, larger bearings and axle shafts, and a track bar. |
| Tires | P235/75R-15 white-lettered on/off-road tires were an option. | 31 x 10.5R-15 tires. |
| Shock description | Special Bilstein gas shocks listed in the suspension package. | 46 mm Bilstein high-pressure gas shocks. |
The Baja’s documented tire size and protective gear show that it was more than a decal or appearance treatment. But the ZR2’s measured stance changes and dedicated frame and axle revisions make it the more extensive engineering package in GM’s later documentation.

What is—and is not—documented about Baja’s history?
The 1989 order guide provides a factory record of Baja equipment and option prices, but it does not give a verified production total. The GM documents cited here also do not contain an explicit corporate statement that Baja was ZR2’s predecessor. Claims about rarity, total production, or an official lineage should therefore not be inferred from the package descriptions alone.
