Yes, an eligible Tesla can move toward its owner in a parking lot—but Summon is a supervised remote-parking feature, not a driverless pickup or drop-off service. Tesla’s app offers Come to Me to direct the car toward you and Go to Target to move it to a nearby point. Tesla says Actually Smart Summon is intended for parking lots and private driveways, and the owner must watch the car and be ready to stop it.
What Tesla Summon does
Summon lets a person outside the vehicle command an eligible Tesla to move using the Tesla mobile app. It is distinct from Autopark, which assists with parking while the driver is generally in or near the car; FSD (Supervised), Tesla’s broader supervised-driving system; and remote climate or start controls, which do not move the vehicle. Summon does not make the Tesla autonomous. Tesla describes the feature and its limits in its owner’s manual.

Dumb Summon vs. Actually Smart Summon

Tesla’s current feature name is Actually Smart Summon, often abbreviated ASS in its manuals. Neither mode is a substitute for driving the car through ordinary road traffic.
Can a Tesla really pick you up?
In a limited sense. If your car has the feature, you can stand in a suitable parking lot or private driveway, choose Come to Me in the app, and hold the control while the car attempts to approach your position. You must keep it in view and supervise the maneuver. The car may stop or cancel instead of reaching you, and it is not designed to drive along public roads to collect you at a curb.

Think of it as a way to bring the car across a parking area—not as a self-driving taxi. Tesla’s Model Y manual describes the owner’s responsibility to monitor Summon and warns that it may stop suddenly.
Can it drop you off and then park elsewhere?
Go to Target lets an owner outside the car select a nearby point in the app and direct the Tesla there. That is not the same as a passenger exiting on a public street and asking the car to drive away, find a parking space and park itself. Tesla’s documentation describes supervised movement to a selected location in the parking-lot/private-property context; it does not establish a general passenger drop-off-and-valet service.

Do not treat a target near traffic, a crowded entrance or a public roadway as a routine use case. The owner remains responsible throughout, and the car may not complete the route.

Before you start
- Use a familiar, paved, reasonably flat parking lot or private driveway with a clear path and a clear line of sight.
- Put the car in Park, close its doors and trunks, and make sure it is not charging.
- Check that the cameras are clean and unobstructed. Remove people, animals and obstacles from the intended path.
- Make sure your phone is connected, location services and GPS are available, and cellular coverage is adequate. Keep the phone awake and within the vehicle’s model-specific operating range.
- Check the Tesla app is current. A Model Y manual reviewed for this guide specifies app version 4.38.0 or later; that requirement should not be assumed for every Tesla.
Start and control a maneuver
- In the car, check Controls > Software for available software and capabilities. The Model Y manual lists Controls > Self-Driving > ASS (Actually Smart Summon) to enable the feature; menus can differ.
- Open the Tesla app and tap Summon.
- For Dumb Summon, press and hold Forward or Reverse. For Actually Smart Summon, choose Come to Me or Go to Target.
- Keep watching the car and hold the control while it moves. Release the control to stop it; allow for a possible connectivity delay, so do not rely on a phone command as an instantaneous brake.
- When the car reaches the owner or target, it should stop, shift into Park and display a completion message. Confirm the vehicle is stationary before approaching.
Where Summon should—and should not—be used
Tesla says Actually Smart Summon is intended for parking lots and private driveways, and is disabled on public roads. Dumb Summon should not be used to move the car into a roadway. Avoid airport arrival lanes, busy hotel or hospital entrances, school pickup lines, public streets and driveways that open directly into traffic. These are not controlled parking maneuvers, and the feature is not a replacement for a driver.
Supervision matters even in a permitted location. Tesla warns that the car may fail to detect some low, high, narrow or hanging objects, as well as obstacles in camera blind spots. It attempts to navigate around obstacles; that does not mean it will detect every obstacle or safely handle moving traffic. Keep people and animals well clear, and be ready to stop the vehicle.

Does your Tesla have Summon, and does it require FSD?
Do not assume availability from a model name alone. Tesla says features can depend on market, vehicle configuration, options, self-driving hardware, software version, model and model year. A particular car may lack Dumb Summon, Actually Smart Summon or both, or its behavior may differ from the manual.

- In the Tesla app, check Upgrades > Software Upgrades for vehicle-specific eligibility.
- Consult the owner’s manual for your exact model and year, and look for Summon controls in the app and vehicle menus.
On the U.S. Tesla support page reviewed on August 16, 2026, FSD (Supervised) was listed at $99 per month, as a subscription, with price and availability subject to change. The Tesla app’s Upgrades > Software Upgrades menu or the vehicle touchscreen’s Controls > Upgrades menu may show subscription options for an eligible car. Check Tesla’s subscription information for current terms. If you are considering it only for occasional parking-space moves, weigh the cost against that limited use; the subscription includes other features, and a trial or existing entitlement may affect the decision.
Why Summon may stop, cancel or be unavailable
A pause or cancellation is not necessarily a fault. Tesla lists conditions including an obstacle or safety risk, loss of phone connectivity, poor cellular coverage or unavailable GPS, the phone sleeping, the car exceeding a distance or session limit, an opened door or trunk, driver input, or blocked cameras. Charging, certain vehicle modes, an attached trailer or accessory, and vehicle configuration can also affect availability.
If the car stops unexpectedly:
- Stay out of its path. If the session is still active and it is safe to do so, release the app control to stop it.
- Move to a safe place where you can see the vehicle and its surroundings.
- Check for people, animals, carts, curbs, posts, low objects and overhead hazards; confirm the camera views are clear.
- Do not restart until the route is clear and the reason for the stop is understood. If conditions are unsuitable, move the car manually instead.
Weather and terrain can also make the system unreliable. Tesla warns about heavy rain, snow, fog, extreme temperatures, unpaved surfaces, raised edges, steep slopes and camera obstructions. Roof racks, trailer hitches, body kits and other accessories may extend beyond what the system accounts for; Tesla cautions that accessories can interfere with Summon. For the Model Y manual reviewed, the stated app-to-car operating range is about 279 feet (85 meters), with a pause at about 328 feet (100 meters) and a stop or completion above about 345 feet (105 meters). That manual also lists a maximum session distance of 1,558 feet (475 meters) and continuous-use limit of 7.5 minutes. These are Model Y manual figures, not universal limits: check the manual for your vehicle and software.
