Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn the available model-level comparison of selected compact SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 has the lowest estimated ten-year maintenance and repair costs, followed by the Honda CR-V. CarCody’s 2026 comparison, using CarEdge estimates, puts those totals at $6,004 and $7,636, respectively. They are estimates—not guaranteed bills or a definitive ranking of every SUV, model year, and powertrain.
Which SUVs have the lowest estimated maintenance costs?
The strongest direct model-level evidence here is a comparison of ten compact SUVs. It identifies the RAV4 as the lowest-cost option in that group and the CR-V as the next-lowest. The totals include maintenance and repairs, so they should not be read as maintenance-only figures.
| SUV | Estimated maintenance and repair costs over 10 years | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 | $6,004 (CarCody’s 2026 comparison using CarEdge estimates) | Lowest estimate among the ten compact SUVs in that comparison; also recommended in Consumer Reports’ 2026 small-SUV guide. |
| Honda CR-V | $7,636 (CarCody’s 2026 comparison using CarEdge estimates) | Second-lowest estimate in the same comparison; also recommended in Consumer Reports’ 2026 small-SUV guide. |
These figures are specific to the comparison and its estimates, not a promise about what an owner will pay. They do not establish that every RAV4 costs less to maintain than every CR-V, or that the same order holds across all model years and powertrains. CarCody’s compact-SUV comparison explains the estimate’s scope and limitations.
How to interpret the cost estimates
A ten-year total is useful for comparing candidates only when the estimates share a similar horizon, expense definitions, vehicle class, and methodology. Maintenance and repairs are related ownership costs, but they are not necessarily the same category; the quoted comparison combines them. Actual spending can vary with age, mileage, driving conditions, trim, powertrain, location, labor rates, and upkeep.

The stable, rock-solid base layout minimizes shifting or sliding risks, delivering extra confidence and peace of mind while crawling underneath the vehicle.
- Enhanced Visibility with Reflective Strips: Equipped with high-visibility reflective strips on the body to guide tire alignment safely in low-light environments. This added safety feature ensures precise vehicle positioning during evening home garage repairs, rainy day maintenance, or dark workshop operations.
Nor is a maintenance-and-repair estimate a measure of reliability, fuel economy, purchase price, depreciation, or total cost of ownership. A lower projected service bill alone cannot answer which SUV is the better purchase for a particular driver.
What current recommendations say about other small SUVs
Consumer Reports’ Buying Guide 2026 recommends several small SUVs, including the Subaru Forester, Subaru Crosstrek, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, and Toyota RAV4. It also names the CR-V Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid among fuel-efficient small SUVs. These are useful alternatives to consider for category fit, but the guide’s recommendations are not a maintenance-cost ranking.

| Subaru Crosstrek | Consumer Reports 2026 small-SUV recommendation; a smaller alternative. | No. |
| Mazda CX-5 | Consumer Reports 2026 small-SUV recommendation. | No. |
| Hyundai Tucson | Consumer Reports 2026 small-SUV recommendation. | No. |

Why brand averages are not SUV-model rankings
Brand-wide estimates offer context, but they should not be substituted for model-specific costs. CarEdge’s estimated ten-year maintenance costs, accessed in 2026, are $5,470 for Toyota, $6,799 for Honda, and $7,291 for Subaru. Those are brand-level figures, not RAV4, CR-V, or Forester estimates. CarEdge’s brand comparison presents that broader scope.

Consumer Reports owner-survey figures reported by Kelley Blue Book in 2024 give ten-year brand-level costs of $4,900 for Toyota, $5,835 for Honda, $7,200 for Subaru, and $6,750 for Lexus. These reflect Consumer Reports subscribers’ reported experiences, rather than a matched set of model-specific SUV estimates. They use a different source and method from CarEdge’s figures, so the two sets should not be combined into one ranking. Kelley Blue Book’s account of the Consumer Reports data describes the survey context.

- Start with comparable costs. Use the RAV4 and CR-V estimates as a shortlist signal, not a prediction of your own bills. Compare other estimates only when their time horizon, included expenses, vehicle class, and calculation method match.
- Match the vehicle to your needs. Consider size, intended use, and the fuel-efficiency or powertrain options available for the candidate. Consumer Reports’ guide identifies hybrid choices among the small SUVs, but its recommendations do not establish which has the lowest service costs.
- Check the exact vehicle. Before buying, consult the manufacturer’s maintenance guide for the model year and powertrain you are considering. A general model estimate cannot specify that vehicle’s service schedule or local service expense.
For broader context, Consumer Reports’ Steven Elek said, “The difference to maintain a car on average between some brands can be thousands over a 10-year time frame.” That observation concerns differences among brands; it does not turn brand averages into a forecast for an individual SUV.
