For a reliability-first search, start with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX or GX, and Subaru Forester. That is a defensible shortlist—not a precise statistical league table. The available historical sources report individual model-year results, owner surveys, and segment awards rather than one normalized reliability score covering every SUV sold from 2000 through 2010.
How this reliability ranking was built
Consumer Reports says its historical reliability charts draw on subscriber reports from about 380,000 vehicles and examine 20 potential trouble spots for model years 2000–2025. Its 2010 Honda CR-V page describes reliability as about average compared with other vehicles from that model year.

J.D. Power uses verified-owner opinions for its 100-point scores. The 2010 CR-V received 87/100 for Quality & Reliability and ranked fourth among compact SUVs. J.D. Power’s 2010 Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed more than 80,000 owners of three-year-old vehicles and gave segment awards to the 2007 Honda CR-V, 2007 Toyota Highlander, and 2007 Lexus GX 470.

Period J.D. Power rankings also placed the Toyota RAV4 near the top of the compact-SUV field in 2009 and 2010, while repeatedly listing the CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Ford Escape. These sources support a reasoned buying order, but they do not establish a single decade-wide score for every model.

| Rank | SUV | Best target range in this shortlist | What the evidence supports | Main ownership caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota RAV4 | Especially well-maintained second-generation examples; later 2000s examples can also be strong | Near the top of 2009–2010 compact-SUV rankings | Recall history, suspension wear, rust, and neglected maintenance |
| 2 | Honda CR-V | 2005–2010 | 87/100 Quality & Reliability for 2010; fourth in its compact-SUV field; 2007 dependability award | Recall verification, including Takata applicability to 2002–2011 CR-Vs |
| 3 | Toyota Highlander | 2001–2010 | 2007 midsize-SUV dependability award | Drivetrain condition, service history, and corrosion |
| 4 | Lexus RX 330/RX 350 and GX 470 | Model-year condition matters more than badge | 2007 GX 470 dependability award; strong historical reputation | Premium parts and repair costs |
| 5 | Subaru Forester | 2003–2010 | Appears in period J.D. Power rankings | Engine, cooling, head-gasket, AWD, rust, and maintenance risks |
1. Toyota RAV4: the strongest compact-SUV starting point
The RAV4 takes first place because period J.D. Power results repeatedly put it near the top of the compact-SUV rankings, including 2009 and 2010. A well-maintained second-generation example is an especially sensible place to begin: its age is manageable, the layout is relatively straightforward, and parts and service are commonly available in many markets.
What to check before buying
- Run the vehicle identification number through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall lookup. Consumer Reports’ historical 2010 RAV4 page lists 14 NHTSA recalls; that count is a safety-screening fact, not a reliability score.
- Pay special attention to suspension arms, bushings, steering components, and evidence of corrosion. A documented suspension-arm recall range includes 2006–2011 vehicles.
- Check for oil or coolant leaks, smooth transmission operation, a quiet cold start, and complete maintenance records.
The RAV4 is not automatically the best purchase. A rust-free, documented CR-V is preferable to a neglected RAV4 with accident damage or unresolved recalls.
Rank #2
- Revell Model Kit #14531, Skill Level 5, Contains 77-Parts, Recommended for ages 13 and up
- Detailed 440+6 V-8 engine, hood scoop that can be positioned open or closed
- Detailed interior with separate side panels and a front bench seat
- Molded in white and clear with chrome plated parts and black vinyl tires
- Illustrated assembly instructions. Requires paint and glue. (not included)
2. Honda CR-V: the best-supported all-rounder
The CR-V has the clearest combination of owner-survey and dependability evidence in this group. J.D. Power gave the 2010 model 87/100 for Quality & Reliability and ranked it fourth in the compact-SUV segment. The 2007 CR-V also won J.D. Power’s compact-SUV dependability award. Consumer Reports’ 2010 assessment was more restrained—about average for its model year—so the evidence points to a strong practical choice, not an invulnerable one.

These years fit the requested period while offering a broad supply of vehicles. Condition still dominates the model-year label: inspect transmission behavior, cooling-system condition, electrical equipment, suspension, and underbody corrosion.
Rank #3
- AUTHENTIC REPLICA: Highly detailed 1:40 scale model of the iconic 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Coupe, measuring 5 inches in length with classic finish
- WORKING FEATURES: Functioning doors that open and close, plus pull-back motor action for interactive play value
- QUALITY CONSTRUCTION: Die-cast metal body construction provides durability and authentic feel, enhanced with detailed plastic components
- REALISTIC DETAILS: Features rubber tires for enhanced realism and smooth rolling action on various surfaces
- DISPLAY WORTHY: Perfect size for collectors and enthusiasts, combining playability with showcase appeal
Recall screening is essential
Confirm every recall remedy by VIN, including airbag campaigns. Takata-related applicability includes CR-Vs from 2002–2011, so an apparently excellent vehicle should not be purchased without proof that required work was completed.
3. Toyota Highlander: the midsize choice
The Highlander is the ranking’s best midsize recommendation. J.D. Power named the 2007 Highlander a dependability award winner in the midsize-SUV category, giving this model a stronger period signal than many similarly aged three-row alternatives.
Rank #4
- AUTHENTIC REPLICA: Highly detailed 1:40 scale model of the iconic 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Coupe, measuring 5 inches in length with classic finish

- REALISTIC DETAILS: Features rubber tires for enhanced realism and smooth rolling action on various surfaces
- DISPLAY WORTHY: Perfect size for collectors and enthusiasts, combining playability with showcase appeal
What changes the buying decision
- Verify drivetrain service, transmission shifts, cooling performance, and four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive operation where fitted.
- Inspect the body and subframe areas for rust, especially on vehicles from salt-using regions.
- Check that the vehicle’s cargo and third-row configuration meet your needs; a larger SUV can add maintenance and fuel costs even when reliability is good.
A Highlander with incomplete records is a riskier proposition than a smaller SUV with documented servicing, regardless of its award history.

The Lexus RX 330, RX 350, and GX 470 belong on the list for buyers willing to pay more to maintain an older premium SUV. The 2007 GX 470 appears among J.D. Power’s dependability award winners, and both Lexus families have a strong historical reputation.

RX versus GX
- RX 330/RX 350: A road-focused premium crossover for buyers who value comfort and everyday usability.
- GX 470: A more rugged, truck-based option whose complexity and hardware can raise repair bills.
Reliability does not erase ownership cost. Premium suspension, four-wheel-drive, electronics, and trim parts can cost substantially more than comparable Toyota components, and neglected luxury vehicles often need expensive catch-up work.

The Forester is a useful compact alternative for buyers who value all-wheel drive and a practical footprint. It appears in period J.D. Power rankings, but the cited sources do not publish one normalized reliability score covering Forester model years 2003–2010. That makes it harder to rank above the Toyota and Honda choices on evidence alone.
Inspection points that matter most
- Look for documented attention to engine and cooling-system problems, including head-gasket work where applicable.
- Confirm smooth AWD operation and matching tires on all four corners.
- Inspect the underbody, subframes, brake lines, and suspension for rust and prior repairs.
- Require service records; a cheap Forester with unknown history can become an expensive project.
RAV4 or CR-V from 2005 to 2010?
Choose the RAV4 when the individual vehicle has cleaner structural condition, stronger records, and a completed recall history. Choose the CR-V when its service documentation and inspection are better, particularly because the 2010 CR-V has explicit 87/100 J.D. Power Quality & Reliability evidence. Neither model-year reputation overrides rust, accident repairs, neglected fluids, or a failing transmission.

Buy the condition, not just the ranking
Reliability rankings help narrow the search; they cannot certify a particular used SUV. Compare model-year evidence with recall exposure, engine and transmission condition, AWD design, rust, accident history, repair costs, fuel needs, cargo or third-row requirements, and local parts and service availability.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Run the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup. NHTSA defines a recall as action taken when a vehicle creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards.
- Confirm that every listed recall has a documented remedy, giving airbag campaigns priority.
- Inspect the underbody and suspension for corrosion, leaks, worn bushings, bent components, and accident repairs.
- Test the vehicle from a cold start. Check idle quality, transmission shifts, AWD engagement, cooling-system behavior, warning lights, and every electrical function.
- Review maintenance records and pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing.
What “most reliable” can—and cannot—mean for 2000–2010 SUVs
There is no authoritative, normalized table that assigns one comparable reliability number to every SUV model year in this decade. Consumer Reports’ survey history and J.D. Power’s owner studies measure reliability differently, use different samples, and often report a particular model year or segment. The ranking above therefore identifies the most defensible starting points rather than claiming that every RAV4 will outlast every CR-V or Highlander.
