Toyota has shown three inline-four prototypes—a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter, a turbocharged 1.5-liter and a turbocharged 2.0-liter—designed to work with electric drive units and run on possible lower-carbon fuels including e-fuels, biofuels and liquid hydrogen. Toyota has not announced a consumer launch date, vehicle assignments, prices or certification results.
What Toyota means by “Engine ReBORN”
Toyota’s concept changes the combustion engine’s job rather than simply developing another generation of stand-alone petrol engines. The company says the new engines are being designed alongside motors, batteries and other electric-drive hardware for an electrified vehicle.

With an electric motor supplying part of the torque and response that an engine traditionally had to provide on its own, Toyota can concentrate the combustion engine on efficient operation, compact packaging and compliance with tighter emissions requirements. Toyota says engine-control software and motor assistance can be coordinated so that the engine’s cylinders operate in their most efficient conditions.
Toyota chief technology officer Hiroki Nakajima described the approach this way: “The concept behind these new engines is entirely different from the engines Toyota has used in the past. This is what we mean by ‘Engine Reborn.’”

The three engines Toyota has identified
Toyota Times’ June 2024 technical feature describes three development variants. The dimensions and fuel-economy figures below are Toyota’s stated comparisons or expectations, not independent test results.
| Variant | Induction | Toyota’s stated packaging comparison | Stated or expected effect | Intended applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-liter | Naturally aspirated inline-four | 10% lower volume and 10% lower height than Toyota’s current 1.5-liter three-cylinder | Expected 12% better fuel economy in sedan-class vehicles | Compact vehicles, including sedan-class applications |
| 1.5-liter | Turbocharged inline-four | 20% lower volume and 15% lower height than the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated comparison engine | Intended to cover the performance territory of that 2.5-liter engine | Vehicles needing stronger output from a smaller package |
| 2.0-liter | Turbocharged inline-four | 10% lower volume and 10% lower height than Toyota’s existing 2.4-liter turbo | No specific fuel-economy or output figure published | Trucks, other heavy-duty vehicles and sports cars |
1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine
Toyota says this engine is 10% smaller in volume and 10% lower in height than its current 1.5-liter three-cylinder. In sedan-class vehicles, Toyota expects the compact design and combustion improvements to deliver a 12% fuel-economy gain. That is an engineering expectation from Toyota, not a certified consumption result for a named production model.
1.5-liter turbocharged engine
The turbocharged 1.5-liter is positioned as a smaller alternative to the performance range of Toyota’s 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine. Toyota’s comparison indicates 20% less volume and 15% less height than that reference engine. No final power figure, vehicle assignment or certification data has been released.

2.0-liter turbocharged engine
Toyota expects the 2.0-liter turbo to be 10% smaller in volume and 10% lower in height than its existing 2.4-liter turbo. The company identifies a broad duty range, from trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles to sports cars. That range describes development intent; it does not confirm that every listed vehicle type will receive the engine.
How electrification changes the engine design
In a conventional powertrain, the engine must provide smooth low-speed response, passing acceleration and peak-load capability across a wide operating range. Toyota’s new approach assumes that a motor can fill some of those gaps.
- Motor assistance: Electric torque can provide immediate response while the combustion engine runs in a narrower, more efficient operating zone.
- Smaller packaging: A compact engine can create room for motors, batteries, inverters and associated cooling hardware.
- Coordinated controls: Toyota says engine and motor control can actively manage cylinder combustion rather than treating the engine and electric system as separate units.
- Potentially lower system cost: Toyota CTO Nakajima says combining compact, powerful engines with electric drive units could expand the potential for more affordable battery-electric vehicles, although Toyota has not published a cost target.
The proposal therefore applies to more than traditional hybrids. The same engine family could be considered for hybrid or plug-in-hybrid systems, while Toyota’s wider strategy also includes battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles and vehicles using carbon-neutral fuels.

Which fuels are being considered?
Toyota says the engines are being developed for compatibility with e-fuels, biofuels and liquid hydrogen in addition to conventional engine-fuel pathways. Compatibility at the development stage does not mean that a fuel is approved for every engine, legal in every market or available at public filling stations.

E-fuels
E-fuels are synthetic fuels made using processes intended to produce a lower lifecycle carbon balance when their inputs and energy supply support that result. Their real-world benefit depends on how they are manufactured, transported and used, as well as on local regulation and availability.
Biofuels
Biofuels can be made from biological feedstocks. Their lifecycle emissions vary with the feedstock, land-use effects, processing and distribution. Toyota’s announcement identifies biofuel compatibility as a development goal, not a blanket approval for every existing or future blend.
Liquid hydrogen
Hydrogen combustion keeps an internal-combustion engine architecture but burns hydrogen rather than a carbon-containing fuel. Toyota includes liquid hydrogen among the fuels under consideration. Storage, transport, refuelling infrastructure and lifecycle energy use remain separate practical questions from whether an engine can combust the fuel.

Toyota defines “carbon-neutral fuels” by lifecycle accounting—from manufacture through use—rather than by the absence of carbon dioxide at the vehicle’s tailpipe. That distinction matters: a fuel can only approach net-zero emissions when its full production and use chain supports the claim.

What motorsport has demonstrated so far
Toyota Europe reported in March 2025 that the GR Yaris M Concept uses the G20E internal-combustion prototype and is being developed to run on carbon-neutral fuels or hydrogen in Super Taikyu racing. Toyota Europe also reported the use of renewable biofuels and e-fuels in the GR010, GR Yaris Rally1 and GR Supra GT4 race cars, alongside continuing hydrogen-combustion work.
These racing programs show where Toyota is developing fuel and combustion technology under competition conditions. They do not establish that the G20E, the three 1.5-liter/2.0-liter variants or any particular fuel will be sold in a road car.

Toyota has announced development work and technical targets, but the cited announcements do not include a consumer launch date or a confirmed production vehicle. They also do not provide:
- Final horsepower, torque or emissions-homologation results
- Certified fuel-economy figures for a production model
- Retail pricing or a trim-level assignment
- A public replacement-parts catalog for the prototypes
- Confirmation of which markets could receive which engine or fuel
Reports that assign a late-2026 arrival should be treated as unverified unless Toyota publishes a new official announcement. Development prototypes can change substantially before production, and a production engine may be paired with different motors, batteries, transmissions or fuel systems than the demonstrators described publicly.

How the program fits Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy
Toyota is not presenting the new engines as a substitute for every electric vehicle. Its stated “multi-pathway” approach treats hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles and carbon-neutral fuels as complementary options whose practicality differs by market and customer.
For urban use and regions with reliable charging, a battery-electric vehicle may avoid combustion altogether. A hybrid can reduce fuel use without requiring a large battery or dependable overnight charging. In areas where charging or hydrogen infrastructure is limited, an efficient engine paired with an electric system could be a transitional or practical choice. Those are technology and infrastructure considerations, not a promise that one powertrain will be best everywhere.
Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda summarized the company’s position by saying that engines still have a role as a practical means of achieving carbon neutrality and that the technology should be refined. The eventual climate benefit will depend on the vehicle’s complete lifecycle, the electricity or fuel used, and how much the vehicle is driven.

- Production confirmation: Toyota would need to name a road-going model, market and launch timing.
- Certification data: Official fuel-economy, emissions and power figures would replace the current development estimates.
- Hybrid-system details: Watch for battery capacity, motor output, transmission design and the control strategy that determines how often the engine operates.
- Fuel approvals: Toyota would need to specify compatible fuel grades, hydrogen storage arrangements and regional availability.
- Manufacturing and service information: Parts catalogs, warranty terms and service procedures would indicate that an engine has moved beyond prototype development.
The bottom line
Toyota’s next-generation combustion engines are compact inline-four prototypes designed from the outset to cooperate with electric drive. The announced family includes naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.5-liter engines plus a turbocharged 2.0-liter, with Toyota claiming meaningful packaging reductions and, for the naturally aspirated 1.5-liter, an expected sedan fuel-economy improvement. E-fuels, biofuels and liquid hydrogen are part of the development brief, while motorsport provides Toyota’s most visible testing ground. Until Toyota publishes production assignments and certification results, these engines should be understood as promising development technology—not engines buyers can order today.
