For documenting a traffic stop, a three-channel dash cam is the strongest general choice. It records the road ahead, the driver’s cabin and traffic behind the vehicle, so the footage does not end when an officer reaches the side window. The Vantrue N4 is the clearest fit for that use because its official specification combines front, cabin and rear recording. Choose a higher-resolution front/rear system such as the Viofo A229 Pro if distant road detail matters more than an interior view, or the modular Nextbase 622GW if you want 4K front video and voice-controlled file protection.
The camera is only one part of an evidence system. Correct aiming, a high-endurance memory card, an event-save command, reliable power and a lawful approach to audio determine whether a clip is still available and usable after the encounter.

Why cabin coverage matters during a traffic stop
A front-facing camera can show the vehicle being stopped, the road position and an officer approaching from ahead. It may not show what happens at the driver’s window, where most of the conversation and document exchange occur. A cabin-facing camera adds that interior context, while a rear camera records vehicles, passengers or activity behind you.

Front and rear
Two-channel systems document the approach from the front and preserve what happens behind the car. They are useful when a collision, pursuit or second vehicle is central to the incident, but they do not directly record the driver’s cabin.
Front, cabin and rear
A three-channel system gives the most complete geometric coverage. The cabin lens should be aimed to include the driver’s window and front seats without unnecessarily recording rear-seat occupants. This is the best general arrangement when the specific goal is documenting a police encounter.
Best models for this specific job
| Model | Camera layout and video | Encounter-relevant features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vantrue N4 | Front 1440p + cabin 1440p + rear 1080p, all at 30 fps; Sony STARVIS sensors and wide-aperture lenses. | Simultaneous roadway, interior and rear coverage; the cabin channel can show the driver’s window interaction. | These are the manufacturer’s official specifications. Confirm the included rear camera and current regional package before buying. |
| Viofo A229 Pro | 4K front and 2K rear in the 2026 comparison guide; dual Sony STARVIS 2 sensors. | CPL filter, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, GPS and a stated 24-hour parking mode. | The specifications come from a 2026 buying guide; verify the exact bundle, camera count and accessories for your region. |
| Nextbase 622GW | 4K front camera; with a rear module attached, the rear module records 1080p at 30 fps while the front continues in 4K. | Voice commands include “start recording,” “stop recording” and “protect a recording.” | The rear view is modular rather than integrated into the main camera. Check which rear module and mount are included. |
Vantrue N4: best overall coverage for an encounter
The N4 is the most direct match for a traffic-stop scenario because all three viewpoints record at the same time. Its official specification lists 1440p front, 1440p cabin and 1080p rear video at 30 frames per second. Sony STARVIS sensors and wide-aperture lenses are intended to retain useful detail in dim scenes, including a nighttime roadside stop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Install the cabin camera so the driver’s window, steering wheel area and front seats remain visible. Avoid pointing it so far across the cabin that the lens records a large amount of irrelevant rear-seat space. The goal is a clear view of the interaction, not maximum interior coverage.
The N4 is preferable to a high-resolution front-only camera when the question is “What happened at my window?” Its front channel still documents the road, and the rear channel can show vehicles that stop behind you or pass during the encounter. If your priority is reading very distant plates on the road rather than recording the cabin, a 4K front system may produce more pixels on that narrow target.
Viofo A229 Pro: choose it for front/rear detail and connectivity
A 2026 buying guide identifies the A229 Pro as a 4K-front/2K-rear system using dual Sony STARVIS 2 sensors. The same guide lists a CPL filter, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, GPS and 24-hour parking mode. Those features make it attractive when roadway evidence, glare control and quick wireless transfer matter more than an inward-facing channel.
A circular-polarizer filter can reduce reflections from the windshield and dashboard, but it must be rotated correctly and can reduce light in dark conditions. Test the image after mounting rather than assuming the filter improves every scene. The guide’s 24-hour parking-mode claim should be treated as package-dependent: verify that the selected kit includes the required power hardware and the camera channels you need.

- Protection Function: Our car cup holder coaster has a carry handle design and a stand-up ring edge on its edge to effectively prevent food crumbs, drinks and water from leaking out and preventing the car cup holder from getting dirty.Meanwhile,Thickened design effectively prevents the cup holder from being scratched by the cup when driving on bumpy roads and eliminates the annoying thumping sound, making your journey more enjoyable.
- Easy to Use and Clean: With embedded installation, you just need to put it flat on the car cupholder. It is also very quick to remove, there is a small bump on the coaster, pinch it and you can easily remove the coaster. - 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
Because the A229 Pro is presented as a front/rear system in that comparison, it does not provide the same direct cabin view as a three-channel camera. You can still record an encounter from the front and preserve the surrounding traffic, but the officer at the side window may be outside the image.
Nextbase 622GW: modular 4K front video with voice protection
The manufacturer states that the 622GW continues recording in 4K when a rear module is connected. The rear module records 1080p at 30 fps. This gives the system strong forward detail while adding a rear perspective without replacing the main camera.
Voice commands—“start recording,” “stop recording” and “protect a recording”—can be useful when your hands are occupied or you do not want to reach toward the camera during a stop. Test recognition with the windows closed and with normal road noise before relying on it. A physical event-save button remains valuable as a backup.
The 622GW’s modular rear arrangement is not the same as a dedicated cabin channel. If your objective is to capture the conversation and the officer’s position at the driver’s window, confirm that the chosen module and mounting position actually face the cabin; otherwise select a system designed with an inward-facing camera.

Choose the Vantrue N4 when interaction coverage comes first
Select the N4 if you want the officer’s approach, the driver’s interior context and rear traffic in one synchronized setup. It is the most complete choice for documenting what happened inside and around the car, provided local law allows the intended audio and video recording.
Choose the Viofo A229 Pro when road detail is the priority
Select the A229 Pro if you mainly need front and rear roadway evidence, want a CPL filter and wireless transfer, and are prepared to confirm the exact 2026 bundle and parking-power requirements. It is a better fit than a cabin-focused system when plate detail and glare management dominate your decision.
Choose the Nextbase 622GW when you value modularity and voice control
Select the 622GW if 4K forward recording and voice-based event protection are more important than a built-in cabin channel. Confirm the rear module’s field of view and whether it can be positioned to record the interior you need.

Resolution, night performance and field of view
More pixels do not guarantee better evidence. A 4K image can help with distant plates and signs, but glare, windshield reflections, motion blur, night lighting and video compression can erase the same details. Compare actual day and night samples when available, not only the resolution printed on the box.
Check four physical details before installation:
- Windshield position: Mount the camera high and behind the mirror without obstructing the driver’s view.
- Side-window coverage: For an inward-facing camera, verify from the driver’s seat that the driver’s window and the officer’s likely position are visible.
- Rear-camera path: Route the cable so it does not interfere with airbags, hinges or the hatch seal.
- Reflections: Clean the glass inside and out, remove stickers from the lens path and check the image at night for dashboard glare.
A wide field of view can include more of the scene but makes faces and plates smaller. A narrower view enlarges distant objects while increasing the chance that a person at the side window is missed. For a stop, frame the cabin lens for the window interaction rather than simply choosing the widest possible setting.
Installation and configuration procedure
- Plan the sight lines. Sit in the driver’s seat and identify a high windshield position behind the mirror. Confirm that the front camera sees the lane ahead and that the cabin camera, if fitted, sees the driver’s window and front seats.
- Install the mounts and route power. Keep cables clear of the driver’s controls and airbag deployment paths. Secure the rear-camera cable along the vehicle’s trim rather than allowing it to hang near the mirror or hatch.
- Insert a high-endurance microSD card. Use a card intended for continuous video writing. Format it in the camera’s menu according to the manufacturer’s instructions before recording important footage.
- Set the date and time. Check the time zone and daylight-saving setting if the camera provides one. An incorrect timestamp can make a sequence harder to interpret.
- Set the lens angles. Use a level horizon for the front view. For the cabin view, include the side window and the driver’s position while minimizing unnecessary areas.
- Choose audio deliberately. Leave audio enabled only when you understand the rules in the places where you drive. If the legal position is unclear, disable cabin audio and document video instead.
- Configure GPS if desired. GPS can add location and speed metadata, but it is optional. Turn it off if you do not want those data stored with the video.
- Test event protection. Trigger the physical lock control and, on the 622GW, test the voice command to protect a recording. Confirm that the file moves to a protected or event folder.
- Perform a complete test drive. Review front, cabin and rear clips in daylight and darkness. Check that the camera keeps recording after starting the engine and that the card is recognized.
How to keep a traffic-stop clip from being overwritten
Loop recording continuously fills the card and eventually replaces older unprotected clips. Saving an event protects a file only if the camera successfully writes it to the event or protected folder and has enough card space.
Vantrue notes that SD-card lag, sudden power loss, loop settings and event-folder limits can affect whether a clip remains available. Protect the file as soon as it is safe to do so, then copy it off the card.
- Trigger event save during or immediately after the encounter. Use the physical button or tested voice command. If reaching the camera would be unsafe, wait until you can operate it without distracting yourself.
- Leave the camera powered until the file closes. Unplugging power immediately after the event can interrupt writing and produce an incomplete clip.
- Stop unnecessary driving before reviewing. Continued loop recording can fill the card and create more files to search through.
- Copy protected files to a second device. Use a phone, computer or other storage location, then verify that the copied file plays from beginning to end.
- Preserve the original. Make a working copy for trimming or sharing. Do not edit, rename or re-encode the only original file.
- Record the context separately. Note the date, approximate time, location and file names in your own log. Keep that note with the untouched video copy.
Short loop segments are easier to locate than very long files, but the best duration depends on the camera’s menu and storage behavior. Select a setting that gives you manageable clips without creating an excessive number of files.

Storage and power are part of the evidence system
A camera cannot preserve footage that its card cannot write. Use a high-endurance microSD card, format it as directed and replace it when the camera reports errors or begins dropping clips. Periodically review a sample of recordings instead of waiting for an incident to discover that the card is failing.
Parking recording adds a separate power problem. Garmin’s documentation says its parked-video feature requires a dedicated parking-mode cable and may be unavailable in some areas because of privacy regulations. The same practical issue applies to any system: confirm that the hardwire or parking cable is compatible with the vehicle, that low-voltage protection is enabled where offered, and that the mode is legal and appropriate where the car is parked.

Do not assume that a battery-powered camera will run a full night without a power plan. A parking setup can drain the vehicle battery if it lacks cutoff protection or is installed incorrectly. If you do not need parking coverage, disable it and remove that additional failure point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audio, cabin video and privacy law
Recording a public-road view is not a blanket legal answer for recording cabin audio. The Future of Privacy Forum describes dashboard, inward-facing and dual-facing cameras and notes that state wiretap and privacy rules vary; some questions remain unsettled. Requirements can differ between the driver’s home jurisdiction, the place of the stop and the people being recorded.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a jurisdiction-neutral compliance approach:
- Check the recording and wiretap rules for every jurisdiction in which you drive.
- Obtain consent where the law requires it, or post an appropriate recording notice when that is the accepted method.
- Disable cabin audio when you cannot establish that recording the conversation is lawful.
- Avoid capturing passengers or bystanders unnecessarily, especially children.
- Do not promise that footage will automatically be accepted by police, an insurer or a court; admissibility and evidentiary weight depend on local rules and circumstances.
Video can still document positioning, gestures, lighting and the sequence of events when audio is disabled. If you are uncertain, consult a qualified local attorney rather than relying on a general internet statement.
Using GPS, Wi-Fi and voice controls safely
GPS metadata can help establish where a clip was recorded, but it also adds location information that you may not want to distribute. Decide before an incident whether the benefit outweighs the privacy cost.
Wi-Fi transfer is convenient for copying a protected file while leaving the card in the camera. Verify that the transferred file is complete and that the app has not altered the original container. Keep the card copy until the backup has been checked.
Voice control is useful only when it works reliably in your vehicle. Test the commands with the windows open, the air conditioner running and normal traffic noise. If recognition fails, use the physical protection button after stopping safely.

Troubleshooting after an encounter
The clip is missing
Check the protected or event folder, not only the normal loop folder. If the camera lost power before closing the file, the clip may be corrupted. Stop recording as soon as practical, remove the card and make a sector-level or file copy before attempting repairs or formatting.

The camera says the card is slow or full
Copy any needed files immediately. Reformat the card in the camera as directed, and replace it with a high-endurance card if warnings return. Review whether event files are filling a limited protected folder.
The officer is outside the frame
Recheck the cabin lens angle from the driver’s seated position. Raise or rotate the camera so the side window is included, but do not obstruct the windshield or create a distracting mount. A front-only or rear-focused module cannot substitute for a properly aimed inward-facing channel.
Night footage is washed out
Clean both sides of the windshield, remove reflective objects from the dashboard and inspect the lens for fingerprints. Recheck CPL orientation if the system uses one. Reduce expectations for plate readability when headlights or streetlights are directly reflected into the lens.
Parking mode does not start
Confirm that the compatible parking cable is installed, that the mode is enabled and that the vehicle has been stationary long enough to trigger it. Check low-voltage cutoff settings and local availability restrictions before leaving the system armed overnight.
Budget the complete setup, not just the camera
Published prices and bundle contents change by region, so compare the complete installed system rather than the headline camera price. Your checklist should include:
- The camera and every required front, cabin or rear module.
- A high-endurance microSD card.
- A compatible rear-camera extension and trim-routing supplies where needed.
- A parking-mode hardwire cable if parked recording is required.
- Optional installation labor if you do not want to route cables around trim and airbags.
- A second storage location for immediate evidence backup.
The lowest-cost camera can become the most expensive choice if it lacks the coverage, power hardware or reliable storage needed for the incident you are trying to document.
Pre-drive and post-stop checklist
Before driving
- Lens glass is clean and the front view is not blocked.
- The cabin lens includes the driver’s window and front seats.
- The rear camera is connected and recording.
- Date, time and time zone are correct.
- The card is recognized and has available space.
- Audio and GPS settings match your legal and privacy choices.
- The event-save button or voice command has been tested.
After a stop
- Protect the relevant clip as soon as it is safe.
- Keep the camera powered until writing finishes.
- Copy the original file to a second device.
- Verify playback and retain the untouched card copy.
- Write down the time, location and file names.
- Share only the version needed for the recipient, keeping the original private and intact.
Verdict
For most drivers who specifically want to document traffic stops and police encounters, choose a three-channel camera and aim the cabin lens at the driver’s window. The Vantrue N4 is the strongest general fit because its official configuration records front, cabin and rear views simultaneously. Choose the Viofo A229 Pro for a 4K-front/2K-rear, connectivity-focused setup after verifying the 2026 bundle, or the Nextbase 622GW for modular rear coverage and tested voice commands. Whichever model you use, lawful audio settings, dependable power, protected-file controls and immediate backups matter as much as resolution.
