The best ATV or UTV tire depends on how often you ride deep mud versus ordinary trails. For frequent mud, compare mud-focused options such as ITP Mud Lite variants, CST Wild Thang, and Maxxis Bighorn MT-762. For dirt roads and trails with only occasional light mud, an all-terrain tire such as the Maxxis Bighorn radial may be a more relevant starting point. No source cited here establishes a universal performance winner, so match the tire to your terrain and vehicle before choosing.
Choose by your usual terrain
Start with the surface you ride most, not the deepest mud you encounter occasionally. The manufacturers position these products differently: ITP lists the Mud Lite family across several terrain categories, Maxxis describes its Bighorn radial as an all-terrain tire and its Bighorn MT-762 as mud-terrain, and CST calls Wild Thang a full-featured mud tire. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results.
- Deep or frequent mud: Compare mud-focused tires, including ITP Mud Lite variants, CST Wild Thang, and Maxxis Bighorn MT-762.
- Dirt roads and trails with occasional light mud: Consider an all-terrain option such as the Maxxis Bighorn radial rather than choosing only by the deepest lug pattern.
- Mixed terrain: Consider how much of your riding is mud versus trail, then compare available sizes and construction for your vehicle. No cited source establishes which tire will provide the best traction or service life in your conditions.
A rider describing their use as “mostly dirt roads / trails sometimes light mud” is asking for a different balance than someone who spends most rides in deep mud. That phrasing comes from an anecdotal community discussion, not a tire test: Reddit ATV tire recommendations.

| Tire | Manufacturer-stated use | Published construction or tread details | What the available information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITP Mud Lite Series | ITP lists all-terrain, intermediate and loose surfaces, mud, rocks/ruts, snow, soft surfaces, sport ATV, and utility ATV among its terrain or use categories. | ITP identifies four variants—AT, XL, XXL, and Sport—and says the series has 6-ply-rated construction. Lug depth: AT 3/4 inch; XL 1-1/8 inch; XXL 1.3 inch; Sport 3/4 inch. ITP also publishes a size table. | Published variant and size specifications, plus ITP’s own use and construction claims. | CST Wild Thang | CST calls it a full-featured mud tire for ATV or side-by-side use. | Construction and size specifications are not stated in the cited product information. | Manufacturer positioning as a mud tire; no comparative test data is established here. CST Wild Thang ATV Tire. |
| Maxxis Bighorn radial | Maxxis recommends it for all-terrain use. | Maxxis lists 6-ply radial construction and publishes sizes, dimensions, rim sizes, maximum pressure, tread depth, and front/rear position. | A specification-rich mixed-terrain comparison point, not evidence of superior mud performance. Maxxis Bighorn Radial. |
| Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 | Maxxis describes it as a race-proven mud-terrain tire and discusses durability and off-road performance. | Specific dimensions and comparative test results are not stated here. | Manufacturer claims about intended use and performance; no independent comparative measurement is established. Maxxis Bighorn MT-762. |
| Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 | The 2023 Maxxis US ATV Utility/SxS catalog describes it as suitable from dry desert to muddy forest trail. | The catalog describes radial construction; other size-specific specifications should be checked against the relevant listing. | A broad-terrain description from a 2023 catalog, not a current comparative test. 2023 Maxxis US ATV Utility/SxS catalog. |

Lug depth
ITP publishes different lug depths for the four Mud Lite variants: 3/4 inch for AT, 1-1/8 inch for XL, 1.3 inch for XXL, and 3/4 inch for Sport. Those are product specifications. They are useful for distinguishing the variants, but they do not establish how one will perform against another tire in a particular mud, soil, or trail condition.

Ply rating and construction
ITP describes the Mud Lite series as 6-ply rated and states, “6-ply rated construction for durability and reliability.” That is ITP’s claim, not an independent durability finding. Maxxis lists the Bighorn radial as 6-ply radial construction. A shared ply-rating figure does not by itself make two tires equivalent in construction or prove which will ride, resist damage, or last longer.
Dimensions, rim size, and position
The Maxxis Bighorn radial page publishes tire dimensions, compatible rim sizes, maximum pressure, tread depth, and front or rear position for its listed sizes. ITP also provides a size table. Compare the specific size and position you need; a product-family name alone is not enough to confirm a match.

Confirm fitment before buying
The product pages list sizes, but they do not determine fitment for an unspecified ATV or UTV. Check the vehicle maker’s guidance and the tire’s exact specifications before ordering. Gather these details first:
- Your ATV or UTV year, make, and model.
- The current front and rear tire sizes.
- The rim size and any vehicle-specific fitment requirements.
- Your typical terrain, including whether mud is occasional or the main riding surface.
Match front and rear positions as well as size, and confirm that the selected tire and rim are compatible with the vehicle’s requirements. If a listing does not clearly identify the needed size or position, do not assume it fits based on a similar-looking tire.

How to make the final choice
- Describe your normal ride: Decide whether you spend most of your time in mud, on mixed trails, or on dirt roads with occasional light mud.
- Shortlist by intended terrain: Compare mud-positioned options for regular mud use; include an all-terrain option when trail and road riding dominate.
- Verify exact fitment: Match the tire size, rim size, and front/rear position to your vehicle requirements.
- Compare published specifications without treating them as test results: Use dimensions, tread depth, and construction details to check suitability, but do not infer a traction or lifespan ranking the sources do not establish.
