Best Alternatives to the Bajaj Pulsar N250 in India for City and Highway Riding (2026)

The TVS Apache RTR 200 4V and Suzuki Gixxer 250 are the strongest current alternatives to the Bajaj Pulsar N250 in India: one prioritises a lighter, mode-equipped city package, while the other offers a six-speed gearbox and higher stated output. The Gixxer SF 250 suits riders who specifically want a faired body style.

For most Indian riders cross-shopping the Bajaj Pulsar N250, the two strongest alternatives are the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V and Suzuki Gixxer 250. The Apache is the lighter, mode-equipped choice for predominantly urban use. The Gixxer 250 keeps a similar quarter-litre displacement, adds a six-speed gearbox and lists higher peak output. The N250 remains a sensible benchmark when you value its 14-litre tank, tractable stated output and standard equipment.

No published evidence establishes a universal winner for comfort, stability, reliability, safety, service quality or real-world economy. Prices, stock and equipment can also change by city and variant, so use the shortlist below to arrange local test rides and on-road quotations rather than choosing from specifications alone.

The Apache’s published kerb figure is 13 kg below the N250’s (151 versus 164 kg). That numerical difference does not, by itself, predict steering effort, suspension comfort or highway stability. Likewise, the Gixxer’s extra gear and higher stated peak output are useful comparison points, not proof that it will be faster, more comfortable or safer in every situation.

What the Pulsar N250 establishes as the baseline

Bajaj’s current specification page lists a 249.07 cc oil-cooled engine producing 18 kW (24.5 PS) at 8,750 rpm and 21.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. A five-speed gearbox, 164 kg kerb weight, 14-litre fuel tank, 795 mm seat height and 165 mm ground clearance define the basic package. The listed hardware includes a 37 mm upside-down front fork, rear monoshock and dual disc brakes.

Its digital console is specified with Bluetooth connectivity, turn-by-turn navigation and ride modes. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent acceleration, braking or fuel-economy measurements. They explain why the N250 is a useful reference: it combines quarter-litre displacement with a relatively large tank and a broad equipment list without moving to a faired touring format.

A Team-BHP road observation dated 15 April 2024 describes the N250 as particularly suited to city-heavy use, praising low- and mid-range tractability, a light clutch and urban rideability. The same review says highway use is possible but identifies high-speed dynamics and brake feedback as weaknesses in that particular ride, and observes that a sixth gear could reduce engine speed during highway cruising. Treat those comments as one journalist’s assessment under that test, not as a universal owner verdict.

TVS Apache RTR 200 4V: the lighter, configurable city option

Published specification

TVS lists a 197.75 cc engine, five-speed transmission and 151 kg kerb weight. In Sport mode the listed output is 20.82 PS and 17.25 Nm; Urban and Rain modes are listed at 17.32 PS and 16.51 Nm. The motorcycle has a 12-litre tank, an 800 mm saddle, a 37 mm USD front fork with preload adjustment, dual-channel ABS and a slipper clutch.

Why it fits urban riders

For a rider whose week is dominated by traffic, the Apache offers two concrete differences from the N250 on paper: a 13 kg lower listed kerb mass and selectable engine modes. Urban and Rain modes reduce the published output relative to Sport, giving you a choice of calibration for congested streets or wet conditions. The adjustable front fork adds a way to tune preload for load and preference, although the specification alone cannot tell you whether the resulting ride will suit your roads.

The 800 mm seat is 5 mm taller than the N250’s listed 795 mm. That is a small brochure difference, but inseam length, seat width and suspension sag determine whether you can place both feet securely. Sit on the motorcycle in the riding clothes and footwear you actually use before deciding that either seat is low or high enough.

Highway trade-offs

The Apache has less displacement and lower published peak output than the N250, and it retains a five-speed gearbox. Those facts make it the less obvious choice if your priority is sustained high-speed touring or carrying a passenger and luggage over long distances. They do not establish a fixed highway disadvantage: traffic, gradients, rider load and your preferred cruising speed matter. A test ride should include the roads and speeds you expect to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best match

Choose the Apache for a predominantly urban routine when lower listed mass, mode selection, a preload-adjustable fork and dual-channel ABS are more valuable to you than quarter-litre capacity. Keep the N250 in contention if its larger tank, higher listed torque and additional console functions matter to your routes.

Suzuki Gixxer 250: six speeds and higher listed output

Published specification and price context

Suzuki Motorcycle India’s Central Delhi product and price page lists the naked Gixxer 250 OBD-2B at ₹1,84,517 ex-showroom at the time shown on the page. That is not a national on-road price: registration, insurance, local taxes, dealer charges and variant selection can change the amount you pay. Ask a Suzuki dealer in your city for a dated, itemised quote.

The same listing gives the Gixxer 250 a 249 cc engine, 26.5 PS at 9,300 rpm, 22.2 Nm at 7,300 rpm, six speeds, 156 kg kerb mass, a 12-litre tank and an 800 mm seat height. Suzuki notes that specifications and features are subject to change, so confirm the exact OBD-2B variant in stock.

What the six-speed means—and what it does not

Compared with the N250’s five-speed gearbox, the Gixxer provides a sixth ratio. That is a factual reason to include it in a highway-focused shortlist, especially if you prefer closer ratios or want another option at cruising speed. An extra gear alone does not prove lower vibration, better stability, stronger overtaking or greater comfort. The N250 road observation cited above reports good refinement below about 100 km/h but limitations during more spirited high-speed riding; that is a single review, not a controlled comparison with the Suzuki.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Output and mass in context

The Gixxer’s listed 26.5 PS and 22.2 Nm exceed the N250’s published 24.5 PS and 21.5 Nm, while its listed 156 kg kerb mass is 8 kg below the N250’s 164 kg. These are brochure figures measured or defined by each manufacturer’s specification convention; they should not be converted into a guaranteed performance ranking. The 800 mm seat is 5 mm taller than the N250’s, and the 12-litre tank is 2 litres smaller.

Best match

Put the naked Gixxer 250 first on your test-ride list if a quarter-litre engine, six-speed transmission and the highest stated peak output in this current shortlist are priorities. Verify reach to the ground, clutch feel, wind exposure and passenger comfort in person rather than assuming that the numbers settle those questions.

Suzuki Gixxer SF 250: consider it when bodywork is part of the brief

The Gixxer SF 250 is the faired sibling Suzuki lists separately from the naked Gixxer 250, with its own variant pricing and dimensions. It belongs in the conversation when you specifically want a faired silhouette and a different highway riding posture. The available information does not establish a measured wind-protection advantage, long-distance comfort result or direct N250 comparison for the SF.

Compare the exact SF variant with the naked Gixxer at the dealership: check bar reach, steering lock, mirror visibility, seat-to-peg relationship, luggage mounting and how easily you can support the motorcycle at a standstill. Fairing panels can also affect repair cost after a tip-over, but no comparative cost data is established here, so obtain the dealer’s parts estimate if that risk matters to your budget.

Where the KTM 200 Duke fits—with a date warning

An April 2024 ZigWheels comparison included the KTM 200 Duke with a 199.5 cc engine, 25 PS and a six-speed gearbox. That makes it a legitimate model to examine if you want a lighter-displacement, six-speed alternative. However, current model-year specifications, equipment and pricing were not independently checked for October 2026. Do not present the 2024 figures as a current quotation; confirm the exact model and price from an authorised KTM outlet before including it in a purchase decision.

Compare the bikes by the decision that actually matters

Mostly city, occasional highway

Start with the Apache if its lower listed mass and selectable modes appeal to you. Compare it directly with the N250 for clutch effort, low-speed balance, heat management in traffic and the way each responds when you open the throttle from 30–60 km/h. The N250’s stated torque and larger tank may suit riders who leave the city often, while the Apache’s mode choices may be more useful for someone whose daily route changes with weather and congestion.

Frequent highway kilometres

Include the Gixxer 250 because its six-speed gearbox and 26.5 PS peak output are directly relevant comparison points. Also ride the N250 at your intended cruising speed: the published specifications cannot reveal vibration, wind pressure or overtaking confidence. If you prefer bodywork, add the Gixxer SF 250 and evaluate its posture and visibility rather than assuming that a fairing automatically solves highway fatigue.

Fuel stops and trip length

The N250 has the largest listed tank at 14 litres. Apache and naked Gixxer 250 listings each specify 12 litres. Tank capacity is not range: consumption, traffic, payload and reserve practice determine how far you travel between stops. Autocar India reports around 36 kpl in its own mixed city/highway N250 test and distinguishes that result from the listed ARAI figure; it is a publisher test outcome, not a guaranteed owner mileage or a comparative dataset for the other motorcycles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rider fit and pillion use

Brochure seat heights are close: 795 mm for the N250 and 800 mm for the Apache and Gixxer 250. Five millimetres will not predict fit for every rider. During the same appointment, check foot placement, bar reach, knee bend, pillion grab points and whether your passenger can sit without sliding into you. No current controlled comparison establishes long-distance fatigue or pillion comfort among these models.

Braking, suspension and electronic aids

The N250 listing specifies a 37 mm USD fork, rear monoshock, dual disc brakes and a digital console with Bluetooth, navigation and ride modes. TVS specifies a 37 mm USD fork with preload adjustment, dual-channel ABS, a slipper clutch and three ride modes for the Apache. The cited Suzuki listing supplies the Gixxer’s engine, gearbox, mass, tank and seat figures but does not provide a like-for-like equipment inventory here. Confirm brake hardware, ABS mode, lighting, connectivity and suspension adjustment on the exact motorcycle you are offered.

Local support and ownership logistics

Service access is a local question, not a specification-sheet conclusion. Before paying a booking amount, identify the nearest authorised workshop, ask about appointment lead times, confirm parts availability for routine consumables and obtain the written maintenance schedule for your variant. If you commute daily, a workshop that is easy to reach may matter more than a small difference in peak output.

  1. Confirm the motorcycle. Record model, variant, emissions designation, tyre sizes and the odometer reading. Ask the dealer to state what equipment is standard on that exact unit.
  2. Check static fit. Wear your normal helmet and shoes. Find a comfortable foot position, turn the bars fully, operate the clutch repeatedly and check whether the 795–800 mm seat range works for your inseam.
  3. Start in traffic. Ride through stop-and-go sections and speed breakers. Note clutch weight, throttle response, steering lock, heat around your legs and how easily you can make a controlled U-turn.
  4. Use the available modes. On the Apache, try Sport, Urban and Rain where conditions permit. On the N250, explore its listed ride modes. Do not change modes while making a manoeuvre; stop or follow the manufacturer’s procedure.
  5. Test braking progressively. Use a clear, legal stretch to apply the brakes from moderate speed, increasing pressure smoothly. Observe lever feel and straight-line control; do not stage emergency stops in traffic.
  6. Sample an open road. If legal and safe, hold your normal cruising speed briefly, then perform a measured overtake. Listen for vibration, check mirror usability and see whether the posture lets you maintain a relaxed grip.
  7. Repeat with a passenger if relevant. Recheck low-speed balance, acceleration, braking and seat comfort with your regular pillion. Passenger impressions often change the decision more than a specification table.
  8. Write down the result. Immediately record fit, controls, wind exposure, braking confidence and any discomfort. Do this for every motorcycle before discussing price.

How to budget an under-₹2.3-lakh on-road target

An under-₹2.3-lakh ceiling is a city-specific on-road question, not a universal model price. The only dated price in the cited material is ₹1,84,517 ex-showroom for the Gixxer 250 OBD-2B in Central Delhi. Current N250 and Apache prices were not stated in the cited manufacturer pages, and the Gixxer figure does not include the differences created by another city or variant.

Request the same written quote for each motorcycle in your shortlist. Keep the ex-showroom amount, registration, insurance, accessories, extended warranty and any finance charges on separate lines. If one dealer gives a package discount, ask whether it changes the motorcycle price or merely bundles optional products. Recheck the quote immediately before delivery because tax rates, insurance premiums, stock and promotions can change.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the TVS Apache RTR 200 4V when your riding is city-dominant and you value the lightest listed package, three ride modes, a preload-adjustable USD fork and dual-channel ABS. Its 197.75 cc engine and five-speed gearbox are a deliberate trade-off for that use case.

Choose the Suzuki Gixxer 250 when a six-speed transmission, 26.5 PS stated peak output and quarter-litre displacement are central to your highway shortlist. Confirm the Central Delhi price does not get mistaken for your local on-road total, and ride it at your real cruising speed.

Keep the Bajaj Pulsar N250 as the benchmark when the 14-litre tank, 795 mm seat, 24.5 PS/21.5 Nm specification and listed navigation-enabled console fit your priorities. Its five-speed gearbox and the specific high-speed observations in the April 2024 road test are reasons to test, not reasons to reject it automatically.

Add the Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 only if a faired body style and its associated riding position are part of what you want. Treat the KTM 200 Duke as a separately verified option because the available figures are from April 2024.

The final choice should come after back-to-back rides with your actual route, passenger and budget. The published data can narrow the field; it cannot establish your comfort, confidence or local ownership experience.
