It preserves the LS formula—quiet, spacious, V8-powered luxury—while giving you a newer starting point. Period rivals such as the Infiniti Q45, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class can also deliver flagship comfort, but their value depends far more on condition, records, equipment and local repair support than on a low asking price. With any old luxury sedan, affordability means controlling total ownership cost, not simply finding the cheapest advertisement.
What made the LS 400 difficult to replace?
The Lexus LS 400 established a particular kind of luxury sedan: a hushed cabin, effortless V8 power, generous space and a calm ride rather than an overtly sporting personality. Consumer Guide describes the 1990–2000 LS 400 in those terms and identifies the 2001 LS 430 as its successor. That lineage matters because the LS 430 is not merely another large used sedan; it is the direct continuation of the same flagship idea.

Age changes the buying question. A surviving LS 400 may be inexpensive to purchase, yet rubber parts, cooling components, suspension pieces, electronics and neglected fluids can turn a low entry price into a large first round of work. The same is true of any old flagship. A model’s historical reputation cannot tell you whether the individual car in front of you has been maintained.
Period comparisons help identify the alternatives, but they are not modern reliability tests. Car and Driver’s 1997 comparison opened with the line, “A new answer to the age-old question: Can anyone top the Germans?” and placed an LS 400 and Infiniti Q45t alongside a BMW 540i and Mercedes-Benz E420. That article captures the era’s competitive set, not the condition or running cost of cars available today.

Shortlist: which cars deserve consideration?
| Model | Why it belongs on the list | What to investigate before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Lexus LS 430 | Direct successor to the LS 400 and the closest match for its quiet, full-size luxury brief. | Service history, trim and equipment, present condition, and whether deferred maintenance is reflected in the price. |
| Infiniti Q45 | Direct Japanese rival that appeared beside the LS 400 in Car and Driver’s period comparison. | Exact generation, documentation, equipment, parts availability and access to technicians familiar with the car. |
| BMW 7 Series | German full-size luxury alternative for shoppers who want the period flagship experience. | Purchase price versus repair exposure, electronic complexity, specification and maintenance records. |
| Mercedes-Benz S-Class | Another German flagship choice from the same broad luxury class. | Model year and configuration, service history, condition, equipment and the budget available for upkeep. |
There is no evidence here for a universal reliability or cost ranking among these old cars. Two examples of the same model can have completely different ownership prospects. Compare the actual vehicle, its paperwork and your local support network rather than relying on a badge-level verdict.
Lexus LS 430: the closest same-line alternative
Why the LS 430 fits the brief
The LS 430 followed the 1990–2000 LS 400 as Lexus’s flagship. For a buyer who wants the LS 400’s basic character without moving to a different marque, that makes it the natural first search. Consumer Guide’s 2001 model information lists base, sport-suspension and Ultra-Luxury configurations, so equipment and chassis setup vary between cars that may look similar in photographs.
A good LS 430 candidate should be judged as an older luxury car, not as a guaranteed trouble-free appliance. Its quiet cabin and extensive equipment are advantages only when the systems work. Check that every powered feature operates, that warning lights behave normally after startup, and that the seller can explain the car’s service history. A neglected high-specification example can demand more attention than a simpler, better-maintained car.

How to shop an LS 430
- Confirm the model year, trim and suspension configuration from the vehicle identification number and factory documentation.
- Request chronological service invoices, not just a recent oil-change receipt. Look for evidence of routine fluid, brake, cooling and suspension work.
- Test the car cold and fully warmed up. Listen for unusual noises, watch the temperature gauge and verify smooth operation of the transmission and climate system.
- Operate seats, windows, mirrors, locks, audio, navigation, sunroof and other fitted equipment. Repair decisions should account for features that are present but inoperative.
- Have an independent technician perform a pre-purchase inspection and put every recommended repair into a written priority list.
The right LS 430 is the one with transparent history and a realistic maintenance plan, not automatically the one with the lowest mileage or the most expensive trim.
Infiniti Q45: the Japanese period rival
What makes it relevant
The Infiniti Q45 was a direct Japanese competitor to the LS 400 and appeared with it in Car and Driver’s 1997 comparison. It belongs on the shortlist for shoppers who want a large, traditionally styled luxury sedan but are open to a different brand and generation.
“Q45” covers more than one generation and specification, so avoid treating every listing as interchangeable. Identify the exact year, drivetrain and equipment before comparing two cars. The differences can affect parts, technician familiarity, ride and the amount of equipment that needs to be maintained.

Questions to answer on a Q45 inspection
- Can the seller document regular servicing over the car’s entire life?
- Are replacement parts readily available in your area, or would common repairs require special ordering?
- Does a local independent shop have experience with this generation?
- Do the suspension, climate-control, electrical and interior systems operate as intended?
- Is the car’s condition strong enough to justify keeping an uncommon flagship on the road?
A Q45 can be appealing when its purchase price is below an equivalent LS, but the comparison is meaningful only after you price the likely work and verify repair access. A cheaper listing is not proof of cheaper ownership.
BMW 7 Series: German flagship comfort with greater exposure
Where it differs from the LS approach
The BMW 7 Series occupies the same full-size luxury territory, but it attracts buyers who may place more emphasis on handling, driver involvement or German design. In the 1997 Car and Driver test, the BMW entry was a 540i rather than a 7 Series, which shows the period’s broader German-versus-Japanese comparison without making that article a direct 7 Series evaluation.
Use the 7 Series as a choice of character, not as a presumed bargain. Large luxury cars carry more systems than ordinary sedans, and performance-oriented luxury models can be more expensive to service and less economical on fuel. iSeeCars’ 2026 used-luxury guidance makes that category-level warning; it does not publish a model-specific repair total for an old 7 Series.
Due diligence for a 7 Series
- Separate routine maintenance from deferred repairs in the seller’s records.
- Check whether the car has been modified, especially in suspension, wheels, software or electrical systems.
- Scan all control modules with appropriate diagnostic equipment rather than relying only on the dashboard.
- Ask the inspecting shop to identify which faults are safety-related, which affect reliability and which are cosmetic.
- Verify that you can reach a specialist and obtain parts before committing to a car that is inexpensive only at purchase.
The 7 Series makes sense when you specifically value its driving character and have a maintenance reserve. It is a poor fit if your only objective is the lowest possible cost per mile.
Mercedes-Benz S-Class: the other classic flagship route
Put the period comparison in context
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the full-size German flagship most shoppers will cross-shop with an LS. The 1997 Car and Driver test used a Mercedes-Benz E420, not an S-Class, while broader used-car guidance places the S-Class in the same large-luxury category. Treat those references as historical positioning rather than a current endorsement of any particular generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesEvery S-Class listing needs a precise model year, engine, body style and equipment specification. The ownership implications of a simpler car and a heavily optioned one can be very different. A well-documented example supported by a capable independent shop is more relevant than a generic reputation for either reliability or expense.

What to verify before purchase
- Read the service file for recurring faults, skipped intervals and work performed by previous owners.
- Inspect the body and underbody for accident repairs, corrosion or evidence of prolonged storage.
- Test every comfort and convenience system, including climate control, seat functions, lighting and infotainment.
- Obtain a scan and road test from a technician who works on the specific generation.
- Budget for diagnosis as well as parts: intermittent electrical faults can consume time before a repair is identified.
An S-Class is a rational alternative only when you are comfortable funding and maintaining a complex older flagship. Its badge or original list price should not determine today’s affordability.
How to define “affordable” for an old luxury sedan
Asking price is the most visible number and often the least useful one. Compare each car’s total ownership proposition: what you pay to acquire it, what must be repaired immediately, what it costs to keep serviced, and how easily you can obtain parts and qualified labor.
| Cost and risk factor | What to record for each candidate | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Advertised price, taxes and any required transport or registration costs. | A low price can simply transfer expense from the seller to you. |
| Deferred maintenance | Documented upcoming services and faults found during inspection. | Immediate work determines the real entry cost. |
| Equipment load | Trim, suspension system and optional electronics fitted to the car. | More systems provide more comfort but also more components to diagnose and repair. |
| Parts and labor access | Local specialists, independent shops and normal parts availability. | Distance, shipping and unfamiliarity can increase downtime and labor expense. |
| Fuel and use pattern | Your annual mileage, traffic, storage and intended trip length. | Large and high-performance luxury cars generally use more fuel than smaller sedans. |
| Contingency capacity | The amount you can reserve for unplanned repairs after purchase. | An old flagship without a reserve can become unusable after one failure. |
iSeeCars’ 2026 guidance makes two broad points relevant here: larger luxury sedans provide more space and advanced features but generally cost more to buy and maintain, and high-performance luxury models can be more expensive to service while returning poorer fuel economy. Those observations describe the category; they are not a price list or reliability score for these four nameplates.
A step-by-step buying process
1. Set your non-negotiables
Decide whether your priority is the quietest ride, a particular cabin feature, rear-seat space, a sportier drive, or the simplest local service arrangement. Write down the minimum acceptable condition and equipment before viewing cars. This prevents a low asking price from changing the brief mid-search.
2. Compare like with like
Record exact model year, trim, engine, transmission, mileage, ownership history and location for every listing. Do not compare a base LS 430 with an Ultra-Luxury car, or a lightly optioned sedan with a flagship loaded with electronics, without noting the difference.
3. Demand records before traveling
Ask for the title status, maintenance invoices, inspection reports and details of recent repairs. A seller who cannot document basic history may still have a good car, but you must value it as an unknown-condition example and inspect it accordingly.

- Premium Material: Crafted from premium EVA material, our car seat side gap filler boasts a combination of wear-resistant, softness&durability. Maintenance is effortless, simply rinse and wipe to quickly clean the dust and debris in corners and crevices
4. Perform a careful first viewing
- Check panel gaps, paint consistency, glass, lights, wheels and tire condition.
- Look underneath for leaks, impact damage and corrosion.
- Inspect the cabin for water intrusion, worn controls, damaged leather and missing trim.
- Start the engine from cold if possible and note smoke, warning lights, noises and idle quality.
- Drive over varied surfaces, use the brakes firmly and confirm that the car tracks straight.
5. Pay for an independent pre-purchase inspection
Use a shop that is independent of the seller and familiar with the exact model. Request a written report with photographs where useful, diagnostic scan results, fluid leaks, tire and brake measurements, suspension observations and a distinction between urgent, near-term and cosmetic work. The inspection is a decision tool, not a guarantee that future failures are impossible.
6. Translate findings into an ownership plan
Separate safety repairs from comfort items and from preventive maintenance. Ask the technician what can be completed immediately, what can wait, and which parts are difficult to source. Then compare that plan with your available reserve and local labor rates.
7. Negotiate from evidence
Use documented defects and upcoming services rather than a generic claim that an old luxury car is “expensive.” A car with fresh major maintenance may justify a higher price than a cheaper example needing the same work. If the seller will not permit an inspection or refuses to share the vehicle identification number, walk away.
8. Verify the final paperwork
Confirm the title, identification numbers, recorded mileage, included keys, manuals and any warranty or return terms before payment. Keep copies of the inspection and service records so the next maintenance decisions are based on facts rather than memory.

Ignoring specification differences
Why it fails: Luxury trims can add systems that are costly or time-consuming to diagnose. Better approach: Record the exact equipment and test every feature.
Skipping specialist support
Why it fails: A bargain can become stranded if the nearest capable shop is far away or parts are difficult to obtain. Better approach: Call local technicians and parts suppliers before buying.
Confusing low mileage with low risk
Why it fails: Time, storage and neglected maintenance affect seals, hoses, tires, batteries and electronics even when the odometer reading is low. Better approach: Give greater weight to continuous records and present condition.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Accepting a seller’s inspection
Why it fails: A seller-selected check may not be independent or detailed enough for an old flagship. Better approach: Arrange and pay for your own inspection at a shop you choose.
Final recommendation
Begin with the LS 430 if the qualities that attracted you to the LS 400 are quietness, space, V8 power and a composed luxury experience. Expand to the Q45, 7 Series and S-Class when a specific car offers demonstrably better records, condition or local support—not merely a lower number in the advertisement. The affordable choice is the example whose documented needs fit your maintenance capacity, because no source establishes a universal reliability winner among these aging flagships.
