Yes—Baidu’s Apollo Go robotaxi service is now operating commercially in Dubai. The service began its phased rollout in spring 2026 through a partnership involving Baidu Apollo Go, Dubai Taxi Company (DTC), and Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Rides operate without a human safety driver behind the wheel, but availability is initially limited to designated areas including Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. They are complimentary until further notice, according to DTC.

What launched in Dubai?

This is more than an autonomous-vehicle demonstration or a test ride. Apollo Go is providing fully driverless commercial ride-hailing: passengers can request a vehicle for an eligible trip, enter the car, and travel without a human driver sitting in the front seat.

That does not mean the vehicles operate without human support. The service remains subject to RTA oversight, defined operating zones, local fleet management, remote operational systems, customer support, and emergency procedures. “Fully driverless” describes the vehicle’s operation during the ride—not the absence of monitoring or assistance infrastructure.

The launch should also not be interpreted as a citywide deployment. The initial service is restricted to selected roads and neighborhoods, and a conventional taxi may still be the only practical option for airport journeys, routes outside the approved area, unusual destinations, or passengers requiring assistance that has not been specifically confirmed.

RTA’s announcement covers an initial combined rollout of 100 autonomous taxis across its Apollo Go and WeRide programs. Separately, DTC and Baidu describe an Apollo Go plan involving 50 vehicles during the first year, followed by expansion to more than 1,000 vehicles over the following years. Those figures refer to different parts of Dubai’s wider autonomous-taxi program and should not be treated as conflicting fleet totals. RTA and the Dubai Media Office provide the respective announcements.

How the Apollo Go Dubai rollout unfolded

Date Milestone
May 2025 RTA and Baidu agreed to conduct operational trials involving dozens of autonomous taxis, including a planned 50-vehicle trial.
January 2026 Apollo Go received Dubai’s first permit for fully autonomous testing on designated public roads without a safety driver. Baidu also opened Apollo Go Park, its first overseas operations and management hub.
February 5, 2026 Dubai publicly marked the official operation of Baidu Apollo Go RT6 driverless taxis, ahead of broader commercial availability.
February 10, 2026 Baidu and Uber announced plans to make Apollo Go vehicles available through Uber in selected Jumeirah locations.
March 30, 2026 RTA announced commercial autonomous-taxi operations involving both Apollo Go and WeRide in Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah.
April 1–2, 2026 DTC and Baidu formally announced fully driverless commercial ride-hailing through the Apollo Go app.

The distinction between these dates matters. The January permit concerned testing; the February event marked official vehicle operations; and the March-April announcements established the commercial rollout.

Where can you ride?

The initial operating area centers on:

  • Jumeirah
  • Umm Suqeim
  • Nearby designated roads and approved service zones

Coverage is being expanded gradually. There is no basis in the launch information to assume that Apollo Go is available throughout Dubai, at Dubai International Airport, or across every major tourist destination. A pickup or destination outside the vehicle’s approved operating domain may be rejected, rerouted, or cancelled even if a conventional taxi could complete the trip.

Availability can also change because of roadworks, temporary closures, incidents, unusual weather, traffic conditions, or vehicle supply. The live booking app is therefore more reliable than a general service-area description.

How to book an Apollo Go robotaxi

  1. Check the Apollo Go app. DTC identifies the Apollo Go app, available for iOS and Android, as the main booking route for the Dubai service. The official service site is Apollo Go.
  2. Enter the pickup and destination. The app should determine whether both points fall inside the current service zone.
  3. Confirm the live price. DTC says rides are complimentary during the initial phase, but the promotion has no published end date.
  4. Follow the designated pickup instructions. A blocked curb, illegally parked vehicle, construction, or an inaccessible stopping point can prevent the robotaxi from completing pickup.
  5. Check alternative apps if necessary. Uber announced an Apollo Go option for selected Jumeirah locations, including matching through UberX or Uber Comfort and an “Autonomous” option. However, DTC’s later commercial-launch material emphasizes the Apollo Go app. Live Uber availability should be checked in the customer’s app rather than assumed.

DTC also says integration with Bolt and other e-hailing providers is expected as the rollout expands. That is a planned or rollout-dependent channel, not a guarantee that every provider currently offers Apollo Go in every eligible location.

What does a ride cost?

Apollo Go rides are complimentary until further notice, according to DTC. This is a launch promotion, not a permanent promise of free transport. DTC has not published a definitive end date for the free-ride period.

After the promotional phase, DTC expects standard Dubai Taxi Company taxi fares to apply, with no additional autonomous-vehicle surcharge. The final paid tariff and its treatment in each booking platform should be confirmed in the app. No exact future fare should be inferred from the current free period.

What vehicle is used?

RTA identified the vehicles used in the February operational launch as Baidu Apollo Go RT6 autonomous taxis. The RT6 was designed specifically for autonomous ride-hailing rather than being simply a conventional taxi with an experimental driver-assistance system added.

According to RTA’s description, the vehicle combines cameras, lidar, radar, high-definition maps, artificial-intelligence software, and autonomous decision-making systems. RTA says the system is designed to handle intersections, traffic lights, pedestrians, and surrounding vehicles.

Is there a safety driver?

Not in the fully driverless Apollo Go service described by DTC. The vehicle is intended to operate without a human safety driver behind the wheel. That separates the commercial service from earlier Dubai trials in which a safety driver was present.

A passenger should nevertheless expect a managed autonomous service, not an unsupervised experiment. The available materials confirm that no safety driver is sitting in the vehicle; they do not disclose the number of remote operators, the precise circumstances in which remote intervention is possible, or the complete process for handling every type of incident.

What support is available inside the car?

DTC says Apollo Go vehicles provide:

  • App-based customer support.
  • Contact information inside the vehicle.
  • An in-vehicle emergency button.
  • Direct access to police assistance at 999 for emergencies.

Passengers should not assume that a human helper will immediately arrive at the vehicle or that a remote operator can resolve every problem instantly. The published information does not fully specify remote-intervention procedures, response times, data retention, cybersecurity controls, accessibility arrangements, child-seat availability, service-animal policies, or rules for unaccompanied minors.

Safety: what the published numbers do—and do not—show

DTC says Apollo Go had recorded, as of February 2026:

  • More than 20 million public rides.
  • More than 300 million autonomous kilometers.
  • More than 190 million fully driverless kilometers.
  • An airbag-deployment incident approximately once every 12 million kilometers, according to Apollo Go’s reported figure.

These are company-reported global operating statistics, not Dubai-specific safety rates. An airbag deployment is not the same measure as every collision, injury, disengagement, near miss, or other safety-critical event. The figures also cannot establish that Apollo Go is safer than human-driven taxis without independently collected and comparable data.

Baidu’s May 2026 investor presentation later reported operations in 27 cities, more than 22 million cumulative rides, more than 330 million cumulative autonomous kilometers, more than 220 million fully driverless kilometers, and a peak of more than 350,000 fully driverless operational rides per week. Those numbers are dated to the periods specified in Baidu’s presentation and should not be silently treated as an August 2026 total. Baidu’s presentation contains the company’s reported figures.

For Dubai, the relevant safeguard is the local approval process. RTA says operational trials on designated roads were used to evaluate performance in local traffic conditions before commercial deployment. That is evidence of a regulatory and testing process, not a guarantee that the service will behave perfectly in every circumstance.

What should passengers check before booking?

  • Service-zone eligibility: Make sure both pickup and destination are accepted by the live app.
  • Current price: Confirm that the complimentary promotion still applies.
  • Capacity and luggage: Check the vehicle’s passenger and luggage suitability before requesting it.
  • Accessibility: Do not assume wheelchair access, child seats, or special assistance unless the app or operator confirms them.
  • Airport and highway trips: Do not assume these are supported.
  • Pickup conditions: A blocked curb or illegal parking can make a pickup impossible.
  • Weather and road conditions: Availability may be suspended or restricted during unusual conditions.
  • Emergency support: Know where to find the emergency button and support contacts.
  • Human assistance: A driverless ride does not provide a conventional taxi driver to load luggage, open doors, navigate unusual requests, or provide immediate in-person help.

Why Dubai matters to Baidu

Dubai offers Baidu a controlled environment in which to expand beyond China while working with a local transport operator and a government regulator. DTC contributes local taxi and fleet-management expertise; RTA provides permits, oversight, and integration with Dubai’s transport strategy; and Baidu supplies the Apollo Go autonomous-driving platform and vehicles.

The opening of Apollo Go Park gives Baidu an overseas operations and management center rather than merely a short-term demonstration site. It also positions Dubai as a potential bridge between Chinese autonomous-vehicle companies, Gulf markets, and future international deployments.

The project fits Dubai’s stated Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims for 25% of all transportation trips to be autonomous by 2030. That is a policy target, not a guaranteed outcome. Reaching it would require expansion well beyond the initial neighborhoods, sustained regulatory approval, sufficient vehicle supply, reliable operations, public acceptance, and a service that works across a much broader range of trips.

What happens next?

The next stage is likely to be operational scaling: expanding beyond Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, increasing Apollo Go’s fleet from the initial first-year plan of 50 vehicles, and adding more e-hailing channels. The longer-term ambition described by DTC and Baidu is more than 1,000 driverless vehicles over the following years.

The difficult questions are practical rather than purely technological. Can robotaxis serve less predictable roads and destinations? How will they respond to construction, blocked lanes, extreme weather, emergency vehicles, and passengers who need assistance? Will paid fares remain competitive with conventional taxis? And will Dubai publish independent safety and performance data that allows meaningful comparison with human-driven services?

For now, Apollo Go is best understood as a real but geographically limited commercial service: a passenger can take a driverless ride in approved parts of Dubai, but it is not yet a replacement for the city’s conventional taxi network.
