For a US buyer who specifically wants a manual, the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata is the straightforward everyday car to evaluate. Mazda sells it new with a standard six-speed manual, while the US-market manual Audi TT RS was a limited 2012–2013 model. Audi’s final US TT RS, the 2022 Heritage Edition, used a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission instead. In other words, this is a comparison between a current, warrantable Miata and an older, rare used Audi—not two current manual sports cars.
The Audi offers dramatically more power and all-wheel drive. The Miata offers a lower new-car entry price, a current manual specification and a simpler decision for daily use. Neither is automatically “better” until you account for seats, luggage, climate, route, age and condition, and your tolerance for inspecting and maintaining an out-of-production performance car.

What “manual TT RS” means in the United States
The rare 2012–2013 six-speed cars
Audi of America says approximately 1,200 TT RS cars equipped exclusively with a six-speed manual were offered in the US across model years 2012 and 2013. That limited run is the manual Audi relevant to this comparison. It is now a used-car purchase, so the individual car’s service history, accident record, modifications and present condition matter as much as its original specification. Audi of America’s 2021 announcement identifies the production total and model-year window.
Rarity changes the shopping process. You may have to compare cars in different states, wait for a suitable example or choose between mileage, color, equipment and documented maintenance rather than finding several identical cars at one dealer. Confirm the transmission by physically inspecting the shifter, the vehicle identification number and the build information; do not assume that a TT RS listing labeled “manual” is accurate. Ask whether the clutch, software, exhaust, suspension or wheels have been changed, and whether the original parts accompany the car.

The 2022 TT RS was not a manual
Audi’s Heritage Edition announcement identifies 2022 as the final US TT RS model year and lists 394 horsepower, 354 lb-ft of torque and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. Those figures describe the 2022 Heritage Edition, not the earlier six-speed manual cars. Audi’s technical data for the final-generation TT RS Coupé specifies a 2,480 cc five-cylinder, quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission; its 0–100 km/h figure is 3.7 seconds. The technical sheet is European program data, so it should not be treated as a US fuel-economy or certification document. Audi’s US announcement and Audi MediaCenter technical data should be read together.
That distinction matters when you search advertisements and reviews. A later TT RS can deliver the Audi performance figures while lacking the pedal and shifter arrangement you want. Conversely, a 2012 or 2013 manual car will not have the same model year, equipment or published performance claim as the 2022 Heritage Edition. Put the exact year, market and transmission in every comparison.
What you can buy new: the 2026 Miata
Mazda North American Operations lists a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder for the 2026 US Miata. It produces 181 hp at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500-rpm redline. A six-speed manual is standard. Sport and Club are manual-only; Grand Touring can be ordered with either the manual or a six-speed automatic. Mazda’s 2026 pricing and packaging release is the source for these specifications.
The Miata is a two-seat roadster, sold as a soft top or RF retractable fastback. Mazda’s 2025 US release described equipment including blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, Smart Brake Support and lane-departure warning, while stating that the RF roof opens or closes in about 13 seconds. Those are 2025 model-year details; verify the exact equipment on the 2026 trim and body style you intend to buy. Mazda’s 2025 release provides that equipment context.
Trim choice changes the buying brief. Sport and Club commit you to the manual, while Grand Touring gives you the option of an automatic if your traffic pattern changes. Decide first whether an open soft top or the RF body suits your parking, climate and noise expectations, then verify the actual window sticker rather than relying on a generic model-page description.

The power and acceleration figures are from different model years and transmissions. They show the Audi’s published performance advantage, but they do not measure ride comfort, cabin noise, winter usability, safety or ownership cost. The manual Audi’s output is not supplied in the cited specifications, so avoid assigning it the 2022 car’s numbers.
Which one fits an everyday commute?
Start with seats and luggage
Both cars are compact sports cars, but the Miata is explicitly a two-seat roadster. If you regularly carry a third person, child seat, work crew or substantial equipment, it fails the practical requirement before a test drive. The TT RS is a coupé rather than a family sedan, so you should likewise test your actual passengers and bags in the exact car you are considering. Published material cited here does not provide directly comparable cargo volumes for the older manual Audi and the 2026 Miata.
Bring the items you genuinely use: a laptop bag, groceries, a weekend case, charging cables and any child-seat hardware. Open the luggage compartments yourself, check the aperture and measure whether the lid or roof mechanism interferes. A brochure capacity number cannot tell you whether your particular cases fit through the opening.
Ask yourself how often the car will be used for errands rather than recreation. A two-seat car can work as a commuter if your routine is solo and your shopping is modest, but it cannot be made into a four-person backup vehicle. If a second household car will handle passengers or bulky purchases, write that assumption into your budget instead of treating it as an afterthought.

Consider weather and roof exposure
The Miata’s soft top gives you an open-air roadster configuration; the RF adds a powered retractable roof. Mazda’s 2025 release says the RF roof operates in about 13 seconds, but confirm operation and trim content on a 2026 car. An open roof can be a benefit on a pleasant commute and an annoyance on a noisy, cold or rainy route. Sit in the car with the roof closed and open, check sightlines with the hood up, and make sure your normal parking space allows the roof cycle.
Check your route for low garages, steep ramps and narrow spaces. Practice entering with the seat in your normal position, fastening the belt, adjusting mirrors and placing a phone or work bag where it will not interfere with the shifter or roof controls. Repeat the exercise at the end of a long day; the easiest car to enjoy on a Sunday may be the wrong one if its entry, visibility or storage frustrates you twice every weekday.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Audi’s quattro system is documented for the final-generation TT RS, but that does not establish how a 2012–2013 manual example behaves on your roads. Snow performance depends on tires, tread, temperature, road treatment and driver inputs. If all-weather traction is a requirement, confirm the exact tire specification and budget for appropriate seasonal tires rather than assuming the badge guarantees confidence.
Do not infer comfort from acceleration
The 2022 Heritage Edition’s 394 hp and 3.6-second 0–60 claim make it far quicker on paper than the 2026 Miata’s 181-hp engine. That difference can be decisive if rapid acceleration is your primary objective, but it cannot answer whether either car is comfortable over broken pavement, quiet at highway speed or easy to enter and exit. Drive both on the roads you use, including a rough section, a parking maneuver and sustained highway speed.
During that drive, note the effort required in stop-and-go traffic, how easily you can modulate the clutch, whether the shifter is convenient in your normal seating position and how much concentration parking requires. These are personal observations, not conclusions supplied by a horsepower table. Have another driver sit in the passenger position and check whether the cabin, mirrors and roofline work for both of you.
Check safety equipment by vehicle, not by model name
Mazda’s 2025 announcement lists blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, Smart Brake Support and lane-departure warning among available i-Activsense features. Equipment can vary by trim, body style and model year, so obtain the 2026 window sticker or build sheet. The cited material does not provide a matched crash-test comparison between a 2012–2013 manual TT RS and a 2026 Miata; it therefore does not support naming a safety winner.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a used Audi, inspect the condition of lights, mirrors, belts, airbags and warning indicators and verify that any campaign work is recorded. For a new Miata, confirm which driver-assistance features are standard on the precise trim and whether they can be disabled or adjusted in the way you prefer. A feature listed in a press release is not proof that every body style or inventory car has it.
Price and ownership: new-car certainty versus used-car uncertainty
Miata pricing is published, but the drive-away number is higher
Mazda lists a US starting MSRP of $30,430 for the 2026 Sport soft top, $33,930 for the Club soft top, $35,730 for the Grand Touring soft top and $38,450 for the Grand Touring RF. Destination, taxes, title, registration, dealer charges and optional equipment are additional. Confirm pricing and availability when you request a quote because inventory and regional charges change.
Build a written drive-away estimate for each trim. Add destination, state and local taxes, registration, dealer fees, financing cost if applicable, insurance and the equipment you actually need. Then compare that total with the Audi’s asking price plus transportation, inspection, immediate service and a repair reserve. A lower listing price is not automatically the lower-cost purchase if the car needs tires, brakes, clutch work or deferred maintenance.

Because the US manual TT RS is from 2012 or 2013, treat every listing as an individual used performance car. Before paying a deposit:
- Obtain the vehicle identification number and a complete title, accident and ownership history.
- Request service invoices, not only a seller’s verbal summary. Look for evidence of routine fluid changes, cooling-system work, brake and tire replacement, and any clutch or driveline repairs.
- Have an independent technician familiar with performance Audis inspect the engine, turbocharging system, cooling system, suspension, brakes, clutch, transmission, quattro driveline, electronics and underbody.
- Check for non-factory software, exhaust, suspension, wheel or brake modifications. Ask who installed each part and whether the original components are included.
- Perform a cold start and a fully warmed drive. Watch for warning lights, clutch slip, gearbox noise, uneven braking, steering vibration, overheating or inconsistent boost.
- Verify that recalls, campaign work and diagnostic faults have been addressed before closing the transaction.
Ask the seller to leave the car cold for your appointment. Compare the odometer with inspection and service records, look for mismatched tire brands or unusual wear, and inspect the underside on a lift. If the seller will not provide records or permit an independent inspection, treat that refusal as a reason to walk away, not as a problem to solve after purchase.
The inspection cannot make an old Audi a new car; it can identify a poor example before you inherit its problems. Set a walk-away condition in advance and keep funds available for age-related repairs.
A new Miata reduces age risk, not practical compromises
A new 2026 Miata gives you a current specification, factory warranty terms and the ability to choose the trim, roof and transmission rather than accepting whatever a rare used Audi happens to offer. You still need to inspect panel fit, roof operation, tire condition and the dealer’s final paperwork, and you should confirm that the two-seat layout and luggage space work for your routine.

A test-drive plan that answers the daily-driving question
- Repeat your normal entry. Get in and out several times, with the seat in your preferred position. Check helmet or head clearance if relevant, steering-wheel reach and whether the clutch pedal position is comfortable.
- Drive the commute route. Include stop-and-go traffic, a narrow parking garage, a rough surface and a highway section. Note visibility, wind noise, ride motions and how much effort the clutch and shifter require.
- Test low-speed control. Practice a hill start, reverse parking and a tight turn. A car that feels exciting at speed can still be tiring in traffic.
- Use your real luggage. Load the cases and equipment you carry weekly. If they do not fit without blocking visibility or stressing the roof, the answer is no for that routine.
- Check climate equipment. Operate heating, air conditioning, defrost, windows, mirrors, seats and the Miata roof system. Listen for rattles with the roof both open and closed.
- Review the paperwork before negotiating. Confirm model year, transmission, drivetrain, trim, safety equipment, mileage, title status, service records and all dealer-added charges.
- Repeat the route in poor conditions if possible. Do not make a winter decision from a dry summer drive. Verify tire condition and ask how the car was stored, but base the final choice on your own route and risk tolerance.
Bottom line for an everyday driver
The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata is the better default recommendation when “everyday” means buying a current US-market manual car with a clear starting price and manageable decision process. Its limits are equally clear: two seats, limited luggage flexibility and a roadster roof that may not suit every climate or commute.
The 2012–2013 manual TT RS is the choice for someone who specifically wants that rare Audi, accepts used-car inspection and maintenance uncertainty, and values the character of a high-performance all-wheel-drive coupé more than new-car simplicity. Do not shop a 2022 TT RS expecting a manual; Audi’s final US car used the seven-speed S tronic transmission. Test-drive the exact examples, load your real gear, verify the equipment and obtain an independent inspection before deciding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the 2022 Audi TT RS available with a manual transmission in the US?
No. Audi identified 2022 as the final US TT RS model year, and its technical data specifies a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. The US manual run was limited to model years 2012 and 2013.

How many manual TT RS cars were sold in the United States?
Audi of America says approximately 1,200 cars equipped exclusively with a six-speed manual were offered across the 2012 and 2013 model years.
Which 2026 Miata trims have a manual?
The 2026 Sport and Club are manual-only. Grand Touring can be ordered with either the standard six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.
What does a 2026 Mazda Miata cost before fees?
Mazda lists starting MSRPs of $30,430 for the Sport soft top, $33,930 for the Club soft top, $35,730 for the Grand Touring soft top and $38,450 for the Grand Touring RF. Destination, taxes, title, registration, dealer charges and options are extra.
Is the Miata practical for a family or regular passengers?
It is a two-seat roadster, so it cannot carry a third occupant or a child seat. Test-fit your passengers and luggage before buying; the older TT RS should also be checked with the exact people and bags you regularly carry.
Is quattro proof that a TT RS will be best in snow?
No. Audi documents quattro on the final-generation TT RS, but traction also depends on tires, tread, temperature, road treatment and driver inputs. Evaluate the exact car and your route rather than relying on the drivetrain badge.
What should I inspect on a used manual TT RS?
Obtain title and service records, verify the VIN and transmission, and use an independent technician familiar with performance Audis. Inspect the engine, turbocharging, cooling system, clutch, transmission, quattro driveline, suspension, brakes, electronics, underbody and modifications.
Which is the safer car?
The supplied specifications do not provide a matched crash-test comparison between a 2012–2013 manual TT RS and a 2026 Miata. Verify the actual safety equipment and condition of the specific vehicle instead of naming a winner from the model badges.
The Bottom Line
Choose the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata for the clearer new-car manual purchase; choose the 2012–2013 TT RS only if its rarity, power and Audi character justify a careful used-car inspection. In either case, test the exact car on your commute, load your real luggage and confirm the equipment and total ownership budget.
