The 2026 Audi RS 5 is a performance plug-in hybrid, not a battery-only RS car. It combines a 2,894 cc twin-turbocharged V6 with an electric motor built into a hybridized eight-speed gearbox, then sends drive through quattro all-wheel drive. Audi quotes up to 470 kW (639 PS) and 825 Nm, while the battery allows suitable trips to be driven electrically before the combustion engine takes over or joins in.
The important ownership distinction is that the RS 5 remains dependent on gasoline for long journeys and for driving after the usable battery charge is exhausted. Its electric-range, fuel-consumption and charging figures are official test-cycle or specified-condition results, not promises of what every driver will achieve.

What kind of hybrid is the Audi RS 5?
Audi describes the new RS 5 as Audi Sport’s first high-performance plug-in hybrid. In practical terms, that means it has two propulsion systems: a gasoline engine and a traction motor supplied by a rechargeable high-voltage battery. You can plug it into an AC supply, use stored electricity for appropriate journeys, and combine electric and gasoline power when acceleration or sustained speed demands more energy.
It is therefore different from a mild hybrid, which cannot normally propel the car for meaningful distances on electricity alone. It is also different from a battery-electric car: the RS 5 carries a fuel tank and a twin-turbo V6 for longer trips, high-speed running and operation when the battery’s usable charge is low.

How the RS 5 plug-in-hybrid drivetrain works
The gasoline engine and electric motor
The combustion engine is a 2,894 cc twin-turbocharged V6 rated by Audi at 375 kW (510 PS) and 600 Nm. An electric motor produces 130 kW (177 PS) and 460 Nm. The motor is integrated into the hybridized eight-speed gearbox rather than mounted as a separate axle drive.
| Component | Audi-published output | Role |
|---|---|---|
| 2,894 cc twin-turbo V6 | 375 kW (510 PS); 600 Nm | Provides sustained gasoline power and drives when electric energy is unavailable or insufficient |
| Integrated electric motor | 130 kW (177 PS); 460 Nm | Supplies electric propulsion and immediate torque through the gearbox |
| Complete hybrid system | Up to 470 kW (639 PS); 825 Nm | Combined system rating quoted by Audi |
The 470 kW and 825 Nm figures describe the complete system. They should not be treated as the simple arithmetic sum of both components’ peak outputs occurring at exactly the same time; hybrid-system controls, battery state, temperature and operating conditions determine what is available at any instant.

With sufficient battery charge, the RS 5 can use the motor for suitable low-load driving. This is the part of the system that makes a plug-in hybrid useful for short commutes, local errands and restricted urban areas where electric operation is practical.
When the driver requests stronger acceleration, travels at higher speed or selects a mode that calls for the engine, the V6 can start and work with the motor. The electric machine fills torque demand quickly while the engine supplies sustained output. The result is a blended powertrain rather than an electric car with a small range-extender engine.

When the battery’s usable charge has been depleted, the RS 5 does not stop. It continues as a gasoline-led hybrid, retaining whatever energy management reserve the system requires. Audi’s discharged-battery consumption figure of 10.0–9.5 L/100 km for the Sedan illustrates why a PHEV’s low official weighted fuel figure depends on arriving at many trips with charge available.
quattro and rear torque control
The drivetrain uses quattro all-wheel drive. Audi says the rear transaxle enables electromechanical torque vectoring that can shift torque between the rear wheels in milliseconds, while the center differential manages longitudinal torque distribution. Those statements describe Audi’s intended performance and handling benefits; they are manufacturer claims rather than an independent comparative test.
In everyday terms, the system is designed to combine the traction of all-wheel drive with rapid control of left-to-right rear torque. That can help the car put down its combined output when accelerating and alter how it responds in corners, but the result still depends on tires, road surface, temperature, battery state and the selected drive settings.
Battery capacity and AC charging
What the battery stores
The Sedan technical sheet lists a 25.9 kWh gross battery capacity and 22.0 kWh net capacity. Gross capacity is the physical energy storage; net capacity is the portion the vehicle makes available for normal operation after the control system preserves a buffer for durability and power delivery. The net figure is the more useful one when thinking about the energy available for driving, although real consumption determines how far that energy carries you.
Charging rate and stated charging time
Audi lists a maximum AC charging capacity of 11 kW. The same technical sheet gives 165 minutes for a 0–100 percent charge when using a three-phase 16 A, 230 V supply. That is a specified charging condition, not a universal timer: the car, wallbox, electrical installation, temperature and battery state can all change the actual duration.

| Charging information | Published value or condition |
|---|---|
| Battery capacity | 25.9 kWh gross / 22.0 kWh net |
| Maximum AC charging power | 11 kW |
| Stated 0–100% time | 165 minutes at three-phase 16 A, 230 V |
How to charge it at home
- Confirm the local specification. Check the market-specific technical sheet for the inlet type, supported phases and supplied equipment. Audi’s New Zealand MY2026 sheet lists a Type 2 AC inlet, but that detail should not be generalized to every market.
- Use an installation that can deliver the car’s requested power. An 11 kW wallbox and a suitable three-phase supply can support the published maximum where local electrical rules permit it. A lower-power circuit will charge more slowly.
- Connect the cable and verify the vehicle’s charge status. The dashboard or charging interface should show that charging has started and display an estimated completion time.
- Plan around departure rather than the headline time. Charging may slow near a high state of charge, and cold or hot conditions can affect battery behavior. Treat 165 minutes as the Audi-stated result for its named electrical conditions.
- Check cable compatibility before buying accessories. Confirm connector type, phase and current rating, local supply requirements and whether a cable is already included with the vehicle.
How far can the RS 5 drive electrically?
Audi’s Sedan page lists up to 87 km of city electric range and 84–75 km of combined EAER. These are homologation results from a defined test procedure. They are useful for comparing versions tested under the same method, but they are not a guaranteed daily range.
| Sedan measure | Audi-published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| City electric range | Up to 87 km | EAER test-cycle result; city traffic and temperature in real use may differ |
| Combined electric range | 84–75 km | EAER range band for the cited Sedan specification |
| Weighted combined fuel consumption | 4.3–3.8 L/100 km | Test-cycle result that assumes a mix of charged electric and gasoline operation |
| Electric energy consumption | 18.4–17.7 kWh/100 km | Official test-cycle energy-use range |
| CO₂ emissions | 98–86 g/km | Official weighted combined test-cycle result |
| Fuel consumption with discharged battery | 10.0–9.5 L/100 km | Shows the gasoline demand once usable plug-in energy is no longer available |
Weather, speed, traffic, gradients, payload, heating or air conditioning and tire choice can all move the result away from the official number. Audi’s New Zealand specification explicitly warns that official WLTP figures are for guidance and comparison and that actual results vary with driving and environmental conditions.
Performance: what the numbers say
Acceleration and output
Audi quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.6 seconds for the Sedan. The maximum system rating is 470 kW (639 PS) and 825 Nm, giving the RS 5 the output expected of a flagship performance model while retaining the ability to run on electric power for suitable portions of a journey.
Top speed
The Sedan’s standard listed top speed is 250 km/h. Audi’s launch release describes an optional 285 km/h top speed. The higher limit is optional and can be dependent on market, equipment and approval, so it should not be assumed to apply to every RS 5.
Acceleration and top-speed capability also depend on battery state, temperature and the control strategy that protects the hybrid system. A plug-in hybrid can deliver its strongest combined performance when the battery has the energy reserve needed to assist the engine.

What daily driving will feel like
Short commutes and urban trips
If your regular route fits within the car’s electric test-cycle range and you can recharge between trips, the V6 may run infrequently. This is where plugging in changes the car’s operating pattern: electricity handles much of the low-load travel, while gasoline power remains available for bursts of acceleration or longer detours.
Long motorway journeys
On a long trip, the RS 5 behaves more like a high-output gasoline hybrid once its usable plug-in energy is spent. You retain the V6, eight-speed transmission and quattro drive, but the 4.3–3.8 L/100 km weighted figure should not be used as a promise for an uncharged motorway journey. The 10.0–9.5 L/100 km discharged-battery figure is the relevant published warning that charging habits matter.
Performance driving
Hard acceleration draws on both power sources when the control system permits it. The electric motor’s immediate torque can support the V6, while quattro and Audi’s rear torque-control system are intended to manage traction. Repeated high-load driving, low temperatures or a low battery state can alter the available assistance and efficiency.

How to evaluate the RS 5 as a PHEV
The RS 5 makes the most sense as a plug-in hybrid when three conditions line up: your routine includes regular charging, many trips are short enough to use electric energy, and you still need the flexibility of a gasoline performance car for long distances. If you rarely charge, the car’s battery adds complexity and weight without allowing you to use its principal efficiency advantage.
- Estimate your normal trip length. Compare it with the 75–84 km combined EAER band, allowing a margin for weather and speed rather than treating the upper number as guaranteed.
- Confirm charging access. Check whether home or workplace power can support the desired charging rate and whether the connector supplied in your market matches your equipment.
- Use the right consumption benchmark. Compare charged-trip expectations with the 10.0–9.5 L/100 km discharged-battery figure, not only the weighted 4.3–3.8 L/100 km test result.
- Separate performance needs from efficiency claims. The 3.6-second acceleration and 470 kW system output describe capability; they do not predict energy use on every drive.
- Verify the exact car. Confirm Sedan or Avant, model year, options, local homologation, charging cable, warranty terms and equipment with an Audi retailer in your market.
Questions to settle before purchase
Ask for the net battery capacity and maximum AC rate for the exact body style being offered. Confirm whether the quoted charge time uses the same three-phase 16 A, 230 V condition as Audi’s technical sheet. Check the local inlet and cable, and ask which electric-range and fuel figures apply to that market’s certified version.
Also establish whether the optional 285 km/h top-speed package is available locally, what equipment is required for it, and whether the quoted 0–100 km/h time applies to the specific wheel and tire configuration. These details can differ even when the model name is identical.

The practical verdict
The Audi RS 5 Plug-In Hybrid is best understood as a high-performance quattro car with an electric operating window, not as an electric RS model with a backup engine. Its integrated motor, 25.9 kWh gross battery and 11 kW AC capability can cover suitable daily driving electrically, while the twin-turbo V6 preserves long-distance and high-speed usability. To get the efficiency Audi advertises, you need to charge regularly; with the battery depleted, expect gasoline consumption much closer to the published 10.0–9.5 L/100 km range than to the weighted plug-in figure.
