The latest Audi Q3 SUV has 488 litres of luggage space with the rear seats in their normal position. Sliding the rear bench forward raises the published volume to 575 litres while the seatbacks remain upright, and folding the second row creates up to 1,386 litres. The Q3 Sportback also lists 488 litres behind its rear seats, but its maximum folded-seat figure is lower at 1,289 litres. Those are Audi’s measured capacities, not a guarantee that a particular pram, suitcase or bicycle will fit.
Which Audi Q3 figures apply?
Boot-space claims differ substantially between Q3 generations, body styles, powertrains and markets. The figures in this article describe Audi’s new-generation Q3 SUV and Q3 Sportback in current 2025 material. Always check the exact model year, body style and market before using a capacity figure in a purchase decision.

An older Audi South Africa document, for example, lists 550 litres normally, 620 litres with the rear bench moved forward and 1,525 litres with the seats folded. Those numbers belong to an earlier specification and should not be blended with the new Q3 figures.

The equal 488-litre seats-up rating means the two new-generation body styles have the same stated luggage volume in that configuration. The Sportback’s lower maximum with the seats folded reflects its different roofline and body packaging. Audi does not provide a corresponding maximum “bench-forward, backs-up” figure in the cited Sportback information, so it should not be inferred from the SUV number.

How the sliding rear bench changes day-to-day usefulness
More luggage or more rear legroom
The Q3’s rear bench can move lengthwise. Push it forward and the luggage compartment grows to the SUV’s 575-litre published maximum with the backrests still upright. Leave it farther back and rear passengers retain more legroom, while the boot loses some available length. This is a useful adjustment when your load varies between a full passenger complement and a shopping or holiday run.
Adjustable backrest angle
Audi says the rear-seat backrest angle can also be adjusted. A more upright setting can free a little additional cargo volume, whereas a more reclined setting prioritises passenger comfort. The practical result depends on the exact bench position and how your luggage is shaped; the litre figure is a standardized volume, not a measurement of every usable corner.
Partial folding for long items
The 40:20:40 split allows the narrow centre section to fold independently of the two outer seats. You can therefore carry a long, slim object through the centre while keeping both outside rear seats available, or fold one side and retain seating on the other. The opening, object length and passenger positions determine whether a real item can pass through, so measure before transporting anything bulky or valuable.

What can you realistically fit?
A published litre capacity is useful for comparing vehicles, but it cannot establish fit for a named item. Audi’s material does not include a verified physical packing test, complete cargo-floor dimensions or a list of tested prams, airline cases, bicycles or flat-pack products.
Suitcases and soft bags
Several soft bags can usually use the irregular spaces around a boot, while rigid cases need the available floor length, width between the wheel arches and tailgate clearance to line up. Those dimensions are not stated in the cited specifications. If a particular case matters, measure its outside dimensions, including wheels and handles, then compare them with the vehicle you intend to buy.
Pushchairs and child equipment
A folded pushchair may fit within the seats-up compartment, but the result varies dramatically by frame design and wheel size. A compact fold can leave room for groceries; a large travel system may require the rear bench forward or one section of the 40:20:40 backrest folded. Treat any online claim that a specific stroller fits as unverified unless it identifies the exact Q3 generation and documents a physical test.

Sports equipment and flat packs
Golf bags, bicycles and boxed furniture are governed more by opening shape and diagonal length than by litres alone. The split backrest can preserve one or two passenger seats, but handlebars, pedals, packaging and tailgate trim can prevent an otherwise plausible load. Audi’s German-programme technical sheet, with status dated 16 June 2025, gives a loading-edge height of 759–768 mm for the Q3 SUV. The range reflects configuration differences. It is a useful reference when judging how high you must lift a heavy case, but it does not prove that loading is easy for every person or that an object will clear the tailgate opening.
When inspecting a car, look beyond the edge height. Check whether the sill creates a step, whether the rear seats fold flat, and how far the tailgate rises in your garage. Audi’s published figures do not provide a complete set of floor-length, floor-width or aperture measurements, so a dealer inspection with your own equipment is the safest check.

Audi says the new steering-wheel control unit creates more storage space in the centre console. That indicates a packaging change intended to make everyday storage more useful, particularly for items that would otherwise occupy a cupholder or door pocket.
What is not specified
The cited Audi material does not give dimensions or a complete inventory for the door bins, glovebox, cupholders or under-floor compartments. Do not assume that a phone, large bottle, camera bag or laptop will fit a particular compartment without checking the actual car. Trim level and market equipment can also alter the available storage layout.

- Place the bottles, cables, sunglasses and other objects you normally carry into the visible console and door pockets.
- Check whether a phone fits with its case attached and whether charging leads can be routed without blocking a lid.
- Test the glovebox with the owner’s manual and any documents you keep in the car.
- Look for a usable location for a first-aid kit, warning triangle and emergency equipment without sacrificing boot capacity.
How to check whether your own load will fit
- Measure the item. Record maximum length, width and height, including wheels, handles, packaging and protruding parts.
- Decide the seating arrangement. Note whether all rear seats must remain available, whether the centre section can fold, or whether the bench may move forward.
- Inspect the exact Q3. Measure the boot floor between the wheel arches, the usable length to the seatback, the tailgate opening and the narrowest point of the aperture.
- Check the loading path. An item must clear the sill, opening and roofline before it reaches the floor. A diagonal route may work where a straight lift does not.
- Protect the car and secure the load. Use a suitable liner or blanket, keep the driver’s view clear, and secure heavy objects so they cannot move under braking.
- Repeat with passengers aboard. If the bench is moved forward, confirm that the resulting legroom is acceptable for every rear passenger who will use it.
Which Q3 body style is the more practical choice?
Choose the Q3 SUV when flexibility is the priority
The SUV offers the highest stated maximum capacity in the new-generation range and the documented 575-litre bench-forward setting. Its square-roofed shape is also the more logical starting point for tall or boxy loads, although Audi’s figures alone cannot confirm fit. The sliding bench and adjustable backrests let you trade rear-passenger space for luggage room on each trip.

Choose the Q3 Sportback when its styling matters more than maximum volume
The Sportback retains the same stated 488-litre capacity with the rear seats upright and keeps a 40:20:40 folding arrangement with a sliding rear bench. Its published folded-seat maximum is 1,289 litres, less than the SUV’s 1,386 litres. If you regularly carry tall cargo or need the greatest possible loading volume, the SUV’s specification is the safer choice; if most journeys use the seats-up compartment, the headline capacity is equal.
What the capacity numbers do—and do not—tell you
- They do tell you: the manufacturer’s standardized volume under specified seat positions, the available seat-split arrangements and, for the SUV, a loading-edge height range.
- They do not tell you: the exact floor dimensions, the narrowest aperture, the height under the parcel shelf, interior-compartment sizes or whether a named object fits.
- They cannot replace: an inspection of the precise market-specification vehicle, especially when choosing between engines, trim levels or body styles.
Geoffrey Bouquot, Audi AG’s Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development, described the Q3 interior as transferring “the digital stage from the full-size class to the compact segment.” That statement concerns the interior’s technology concept rather than a measured storage claim, so it should not be read as evidence of additional boot or cabin volume.

For the current Q3 SUV, plan around 488 litres with the rear seats in place, use the sliding bench when you need up to 575 litres, and fold the second row for the published 1,386-litre maximum. The Sportback matches the seats-up figure but reaches 1,289 litres folded. Both offer a 40:20:40 rear split, and the SUV’s 759–768 mm loading-edge specification gives a useful lifting reference. Because no cited source supplies full cargo dimensions or an independent fit test, take the actual stroller, case or equipment to the exact car and measure it before committing.
