Its brand page says reliability concerns are serious enough that it does not recommend current Genesis models. In practical terms, owners often love the design, comfort and technology, while certain model years or systems can carry more defect and repair risk than the best-rated luxury brands.
Why are so many people buying Genesis?
Genesis has gained attention by combining premium materials and styling with extensive standard equipment. Consumer Reports has found Genesis vehicles impressive in testing for balanced ride and handling, fit and finish, and commonly standard driver-assistance features.

Sales momentum is real, although sales do not prove long-term durability. Hyundai Motor Company reported 82,331 Genesis vehicles delivered in the United States in 2025, a 10% increase from 2024. The GV70 was the volume leader among the models cited, with 33,876 deliveries, up 26%; the GV80 reached 23,799, up 4%.

Genesis President and CEO José Muñoz has said the brand reached one million cumulative sales faster than any other luxury brand in history. That is management’s characterization of the company’s growth, not an independent reliability finding.

What the reliability evidence actually shows
Consumer Reports’ latest subscriber survey covers about 380,000 vehicles and examines 20 trouble areas, including engines, transmissions, electric motors, charging, brakes, climate systems and electronics. A broad survey is useful for spotting patterns, but a brand average can conceal substantial differences between models and model years.

The apparent contradiction is important: satisfaction measures how much owners like the vehicle, while predicted reliability estimates the likelihood of trouble. A quiet cabin, attractive design and strong technology can produce high satisfaction even when electronics, drivetrain components or other systems generate more service visits.
Reliability varies by model year—and recalls matter
Do not use the brand score as a substitute for checking the exact vehicle. Consumer Reports’ 2025 Genesis GV60 page lists four National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalls and describes that vehicle as much less reliable than other cars from its model year. That is a model-year observation, not proof that every Genesis EV or every GV60 has the same record.

A separate Consumer Reports/NHTSA record describes a fuel-pipe recall affecting certain 2022–2026 GV70, 2023–2025 G90, 2021–2025 G80 and GV80 vehicles. The record identifies 94,760 potentially affected units. Eligibility depends on the vehicle identification number (VIN), equipment and production details.
How to check a car before purchase
- Copy the VIN from the dashboard and title, then run it through NHTSA’s recall lookup.
- Ask a Genesis dealer to confirm every campaign attached to that VIN and whether the repair was completed.
- Obtain invoices or a service history, looking for unresolved warning lights, repeat repairs and missed maintenance.
- For a used car, pay for an independent inspection before signing; a clean recall result does not certify mechanical condition.
Does Genesis’ warranty make it reliable?
No. It limits the financial consequences if a covered component fails. Genesis USA lists five years or 60,000 miles of comprehensive coverage, 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage for the original owner, and 10 years or 100,000 miles of EV-battery coverage. Its FAQ also lists five years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance.
Coverage terms, transfer rules and exclusions still apply, so read the warranty booklet for the specific vehicle. A long warranty is valuable risk protection, but it is not evidence that repairs will be infrequent, convenient or fully covered.

What to consider when buying a new Genesis
Evaluate the exact configuration
Check reliability information for the precise model and model year, not merely “Genesis.” A GV70, GV80, G80, G90 and GV60 use different powertrains, electronics and production periods.

Confirm that an authorized Genesis retailer is reasonably accessible and ask how warranty, software and recall work is handled. A warranty is less useful if transportation, appointment delays or dealer distance make each visit disruptive.
Treat popularity as context, not proof
Growing deliveries show that buyers are responding to Genesis’ value and presentation. They do not establish how a vehicle will perform after many years or high mileage.

Is a used Genesis worth buying?
It can be, if the individual car has a documented history, completed recalls and a clean inspection. The safest supported route is Genesis Certified Pre-Owned (CPO).
What Genesis CPO adds
- A complimentary CARFAX Vehicle History Report.
- A certified warranty that Genesis says can transfer to the next private owner.
- Eligibility limited to vehicles five model years old or newer under the program’s stated rules.
CPO does not eliminate risk. Compare the CARFAX report with maintenance invoices, verify the VIN’s recall status and have an independent technician inspect suspension, brakes, tires, fluid leaks, electronics and battery or charging equipment where applicable. Confirm the remaining warranty and exactly how a transfer would work in your transaction.
Are Genesis cars expensive to maintain?
The available evidence does not provide a complete, apples-to-apples maintenance-cost comparison between Genesis, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. Therefore, it is not supportable to promise that Genesis is cheaper—or more expensive—to maintain overall.

Use a model-specific estimate instead: obtain scheduled-maintenance prices from a local dealer, ask independent shops for common-service quotes, check parts and tire costs, and budget for possible out-of-warranty electronics or drivetrain repairs. Luxury-brand labor rates and parts pricing can make any premium vehicle costly when the warranty ends, regardless of its initial purchase price.
Genesis versus Lexus and other luxury brands
A fair comparison requires the same model type and model year. For each candidate, compare:
- Predicted reliability for the exact model year.
- Owner-satisfaction results and the issues owners report.
- Warranty length, mileage limits and transfer rules.
- Open and completed recalls by VIN.
- Dealer and independent-service access in your area.
- Documented maintenance and repair costs for that specific powertrain.
- Purchase price, depreciation and condition.
Lexus may be the better choice for a buyer who prioritizes a stronger reliability record, while Genesis may appeal more to someone who values styling, standard equipment and a longer headline warranty. The right answer depends on the exact vehicles being compared; a brand slogan cannot replace a VIN check and an inspection.

Bottom line: are Genesis cars reliable?
Genesis delivers a premium experience that many owners rate highly, and its sales growth—particularly for the GV70—shows why buyers are interested. However, its current Consumer Reports reliability position is materially weaker than its owner-satisfaction position, and documented recalls demonstrate why model-year research matters.
Buy new only after checking the exact model, confirming local service support and viewing the warranty as financial protection. For used shopping, prioritize a recent Genesis CPO vehicle, verify recall completion and obtain an independent inspection. Genesis can be a sensible purchase, but it is not a buy-without-research reliability bet.
