Are Electric Vehicles Harder to Stop Than Gas-Powered Cars? What the Evidence Shows

EVs are not inherently harder to stop than gasoline cars. Regenerative braking changes lift-off deceleration, but emergency stopping depends on the vehicle, tires, surface, speed and test method.

Not inherently. An electric vehicle (EV) is not automatically harder to stop than a gasoline car. Regenerative braking changes how the vehicle decelerates when you lift off the accelerator, but friction brakes still perform some or all of the work in many pedal-braking and emergency situations. Stopping distance is vehicle- and test-specific: speed, road surface, tires, vehicle setup and the test method can matter more than the power source.

What “harder to stop” can mean

The question combines several different driving events. Separating them prevents a misleading comparison.

Lift-off deceleration

When you release an EV’s accelerator, its electric motor can operate as a generator. The motor resists the wheels’ rotation, slowing the vehicle while sending some energy back to the battery. This is regenerative braking, often called “regen.” The amount of deceleration depends on the vehicle’s settings and operating conditions.

A gasoline car can also slow when the driver lifts off the accelerator, mainly through engine braking and rolling resistance. That lift-off effect is not the same as measuring a full stop with the brake pedal.

Normal pedal braking

Pressing the brake pedal usually commands a blend of regenerative and friction braking in an EV. The electric motor provides deceleration when available; conventional brake pads and rotors supply additional force or take over when required. The exact blend is designed by the vehicle manufacturer and can vary with the battery’s ability to accept energy.

Emergency stopping

An emergency stop is a maximum-deceleration event measured from a stated speed, such as 60 to 0 mph. It is not a test of one-pedal driving. The anti-lock brake system, tire grip, road surface and brake hardware all affect the result. NHTSA states that conventional brakes still slow an electrified vehicle in some events, including emergency braking and situations in which the battery is fully charged.

How regenerative and friction braking work together

Regenerative braking captures energy that would otherwise be converted into heat by mechanical brakes. NHTSA describes it as an electric motor slowing the vehicle while recovering energy. Because regeneration is limited by the motor, battery and control system, the friction brakes remain an essential part of the stopping system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In an interpretation concerning a planned General Motors electric vehicle, NHTSA described regeneration as supplementing the service brakes under certain conditions. The agency also said regenerative braking should operate normally during specified in-gear brake-standard tests, in a way analogous to engine braking in a conventional vehicle. That interpretation is vehicle-specific and should not be treated as a description of every current EV.

A full battery changes the available regeneration

When the battery is fully charged, it has less capacity to accept recovered energy. NHTSA specifically identifies a fully charged battery as one situation in which conventional brakes still slow the vehicle. Therefore, the amount of deceleration felt when lifting off the accelerator can differ from what the driver experiences at a lower state of charge. That change does not mean the vehicle has lost its ability to make a controlled emergency stop; it means the friction-brake system may contribute more.

One-pedal driving is not a stopping-distance rating

One-pedal driving can bring an EV to a stop in ordinary traffic by commanding strong regenerative deceleration when the accelerator is released. A driver comparing that sensation with a gasoline car’s coasting behavior is comparing control feel, not measured brake performance. A valid stopping-distance comparison uses the same starting speed and a defined brake-pedal procedure for both vehicles.

What published testing actually shows

Available results do not establish a universal EV-versus-gasoline difference. Consumer Reports testing demonstrates why each result must stay attached to its vehicle, tires, surface and method.

Test or report Published result What it does—and does not—show
Consumer Reports, 2021, selected Toyota hybrid and nonhybrid pairs Four Toyota hybrid counterparts stopped 8 to 12 feet farther from 60 mph on dry pavement. These are selected hybrid comparisons, not a fleet-wide battery-EV statistic.
Consumer Reports, 2021, Chrysler Pacifica comparison The tested hybrid stopped 9 feet farther than the gasoline-only counterpart. A model-specific hybrid result; it cannot be applied to all electrified vehicles.
Consumer Reports, 2021, Hyundai Sonata comparison The tested hybrid stopped 8 feet farther than the gasoline version. Another selected hybrid pairing, with tires and setup potentially contributing.
Consumer Reports, 2021, Tesla Model Y 121 feet from 60 mph on a dry surface. One test result for one model and configuration, not an EV class average.
Consumer Reports, 2018, Tesla Model 3 152 feet from 60 mph in Consumer Reports’ testing. A separate report and test result; it is not directly interchangeable with the Model Y figure.
Tesla result reported by Consumer Reports, 2018 Tesla said its own Model 3 testing averaged 133 feet with the same tires. The 133-foot figure is Tesla’s stated average, not Consumer Reports’ measured result.

The hybrid findings show that some electrified versions stopped farther than their gasoline counterparts, while other tested hybrid and nonhybrid pairs performed similarly or the hybrid stopped in a shorter distance. Consumer Reports discussed tire selection as one possible contributor in some comparisons. The results therefore support model-by-model evaluation rather than a powertrain rule.

Consumer Reports’ Jake Fisher summarized the performance principle this way: “Automakers should always focus on delivering vehicles to consumers with balanced performance, whether that vehicle is conventional gas-powered, a hybrid, or an EV.”

Why two vehicles can stop differently

Vehicle match and configuration

A comparison is meaningful only when the vehicles are closely matched. Body style, trim, wheel specification and equipment can change the result. Comparing a heavy electric pickup with a compact gasoline hatchback and attributing the difference solely to propulsion would not isolate the relevant variable.

Tires

Tires are the only part of the vehicle touching the road, so their compound, tread design, size, condition and inflation specification affect available grip. Consumer Reports has tested replacement tires for EV applications, including ice braking, and its braking coverage discusses tire-related trade-offs. There is no universal “EV tire” that guarantees a shorter stop. Use the size and specification approved for the particular vehicle, and treat any claimed performance as dependent on the tested tire.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Surface and weather

Dry, wet, snow and ice surfaces produce different stopping distances. Consumer Reports’ routine method includes 60-to-0-mph tests on wet and dry pavement and evaluates pedal modulation as well as distance. A dry result cannot be used as a prediction for a wet or icy road.

Starting speed

Stopping distance rises sharply as speed increases because the vehicle carries more kinetic energy. A result from 60 mph must be labeled as a 60-to-0-mph result; it should not be presented as a general distance at every speed.

Brake-control strategy

Manufacturers calibrate how regeneration and friction braking blend, how the pedal responds and when the mechanical brakes take over. Those choices affect pedal feel and control behavior. They do not create a universal advantage or disadvantage for every EV.

What NHTSA’s automatic-emergency-braking findings mean

NHTSA’s 2024 automatic emergency braking (AEB) final rule discusses regenerative-braking settings during AEB testing. In the tested scenarios, the agency reported no negative effect on AEB performance. Stronger regenerative settings produced slightly better performance in some results, while whether contact was avoided still depended on the vehicle tested.

How to compare an EV with a gasoline car fairly

If you are evaluating two vehicles for braking performance, record the following items before drawing a conclusion:

  1. Match the vehicles. Use the same class or closely related models, and identify trim, wheel and equipment differences.
  2. Report the starting speed and interval. State whether the result is 60-to-0 mph or another defined test.
  3. Name the surface. Keep dry, wet, snow and ice results separate.
  4. Document the tires. Record make, model, size, condition and whether both vehicles use the same specification when known.
  5. Identify the tester and method. Note who performed the test, whether several stops were averaged and whether the number or type of runs was disclosed.
  6. Separate braking modes. Do not combine accelerator-lift deceleration, ordinary brake-pedal stops and automatic emergency braking into one number.

Consumer Reports’ method illustrates the value of this discipline: its reports identify the 60-to-0-mph procedure, road condition and pedal-modulation evaluation. A single published distance without those details is difficult to interpret.

What federal brake rules do—and do not—tell you

U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 135 sets light-vehicle brake-system performance requirements and includes procedures for electric vehicles equipped with regenerative braking. Compliance means a vehicle meets specified regulatory tests; it does not mean every compliant EV and gasoline car will have identical stopping distances in real-world conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NHTSA’s interpretation of regenerative braking likewise explains how the standards apply under particular test conditions. It is not a measured, universal comparison of EV and gasoline stopping performance. Regulatory language can change, so consult the current official eCFR text when a legal or compliance determination matters.

Practical implications for drivers

If an EV feels different when you lift off

Strong regeneration can make the vehicle slow sooner when you release the accelerator than a gasoline car would. That is a control characteristic, not evidence that the friction brakes are weaker. Learn the selected regeneration or one-pedal setting and leave enough following distance for the road and traffic conditions.

If the battery is fully charged

Expect the vehicle’s control system to rely more on conventional braking in conditions where regeneration is limited. The owner’s manual describes the vehicle-specific behavior and any dashboard messages associated with charging or brake operation.

If you are replacing tires

Check the vehicle’s approved tire size, load rating and speed rating. A replacement chosen only for low rolling resistance may involve a different grip trade-off than a tire selected for maximum wet or winter braking. Fitment and the intended climate matter more than a generic EV label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line: compare the exact vehicles, not the power sources

Electric vehicles are not inherently harder to stop than gasoline-powered cars. Regeneration changes lift-off deceleration and can supplement friction braking, while conventional brakes remain available for many normal and emergency events. Published results range from longer to similar to shorter distances depending on the model and test setup. The defensible comparison is always specific: same type of vehicle, stated speed, surface, tires, method and braking mode.
