Yes—sometimes. An electric van can be practical without a depot charger when its daily routes are predictable, the longest regular shift fits the vehicle’s usable range with its payload, and the driver has dependable access to home, workplace or public charging. It is a poor fit when distances vary widely, charging depends on a single unreliable public unit, or a charge stop would regularly remove billable time.
There is no universal mileage cutoff. UK fleet research found that operators generally used electric vans for shorter or more consistent work and adopted them for only part of their fleets. The decision is operational: match the van, route, parking and charging arrangement before committing.

What “no depot charger” really means
A business does not need a dedicated depot to run an electric van, but it does need a repeatable charging plan. “No depot” may mean several different situations:
- The driver takes the van home, parks off street and charges overnight.
- The business has a small workplace car park where a charger could be installed.
- The driver cannot charge at home and uses a workplace, shared site or public network.
- The van returns to neither a depot nor a reliable overnight charging location and must rely mainly on public rapid charging.
These arrangements have very different costs and risks. The UK government’s 2024 study of electric vans reported that many operators did not use a back-to-depot model and therefore relied on public charging. It also noted that businesses adopting electric vans tended to do so for only part of their fleet. Those findings describe the fleets studied, not a rule that every small business must follow.

For context, the Department for Transport’s Transport and environment statistics 2022 attributed 16% of all UK transport CO2 emissions to vans and other transport in 2020. That historical figure explains the policy interest in electrification; it does not predict your fuel or operating-cost savings.
Start with route fit, not the charger
The first question is whether the van can complete the workday with a practical reserve. Use the longest routine day and the most demanding normal payload, not the weekly average. Record actual distances for each shift over several weeks, including the variation between short and long days.
Measure the work your van really does
- Log start and finish locations, total distance and the time spent parked at each stop.
- Separate predictable rounds from occasional long jobs, emergency call-outs and seasonal peaks.
- Record payload or equipment carried. Fleet participants in the government study questioned whether advertised range would hold with their loads.
- Note where the van is parked for long enough to charge: the driver’s home, a customer site, a workshop, a shared car park or a public station.
Do not turn the research into a supposed “under 100 miles” or “under 150 miles” rule. No universal threshold was established. Two businesses with the same daily distance can have opposite outcomes if one has eight hours of overnight parking and the other has only short gaps between jobs.

Allow for schedule variation
A route that normally finishes with plenty of charge can become unsuitable if a delayed job, detour or extra collection forces an unplanned stop. Test the longest routine day and decide what happens when it runs over: a backup public charger, a second vehicle, a customer-site opportunity or a dispatch rule that limits the electric van to certain jobs.
Compare the charging arrangements
| Arrangement | When it works best | Main requirements | Typical risks to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home charging | The driver takes the van home, has off-street parking and leaves it parked for several hours. | Permission for installation, suitable electrical supply, an agreed owner and maintainer, and a reimbursement process. | No driveway, landlord restrictions, a driver changing jobs, or disputes over electricity payments. |
| Workplace or shared-site charging | The van spends predictable time at business premises or a site it regularly visits. | Property consent, electrical-capacity assessment, an installer, possible network work and a way to allocate electricity costs. | Upfront infrastructure cost, insufficient site power, or another vehicle occupying the space. |
| Public charging | The van cannot charge at home or work but operates near compatible, dependable stations. | A vehicle-compatible connector, accounts or payment method, route mapping and a plan for failed or occupied chargers. | Price, downtime, queues, unsuitable bays for a large van, detours and lost working time. |
| Mixed approach | Overnight charging covers normal work and public charging handles exceptions or occasional long shifts. | A primary charging location plus a tested backup network. | Drivers assuming a backup exists without checking availability, opening hours or access. |
Compare every option on access when the van is parked, route compatibility, installation and site-power costs, the tariff at the actual charging time, reliability and waiting, and responsibility for billing. Those factors matter more than a headline charger speed.

Home charging without a depot
Home charging is often the simplest arrangement for a small business when the driver takes the van home and has a suitable parking space. Energy Saving Trust describes common home systems as 3 kW or 7 kW and says manufacturers do not recommend charging from a domestic three-pin plug. Its arithmetic example shows a 50 kWh battery taking more than 16 hours at 3 kW; that is an illustration, not a prediction for a particular van or session.
Set the agreement before installation
Put the practical and financial terms in writing:
- Permission and ownership: confirm that the property owner, landlord or managing agent allows the installation. Decide whether the company or driver owns the chargepoint.
- Installation and maintenance: state who pays for surveys, electrical work, repairs, software subscriptions and eventual removal.
- Employment changes: agree what happens if the driver leaves, moves house or stops taking the van home.
- Electricity reimbursement: define the evidence required and payment timing so the driver is not carrying an open-ended business cost.
Energy Saving Trust identifies several reimbursement approaches, including using an HMRC advisory electricity rate as a rough calculation for car-driver reimbursement, a virtual fuel card or app connected to meters and payroll, or direct payment to the driver’s energy supplier. HMRC rules and accounting treatment can change, so verify the current position with your accountant before selecting a method.
Check overnight time, not just charger power
A 7 kW unit may be unnecessary if the van is parked all night and returns with a modest energy deficit; conversely, a short overnight window may require a higher-power arrangement where the vehicle supports it. Confirm the van’s onboard charging capability, the property’s electrical capacity and the installer’s assessment rather than assuming the advertised charger rating equals delivered energy.
Workplace and shared charging
A business does not need a large depot to install a charger. A small parking area can work if the property owner agrees, the electrical supply can support the equipment and the connection work is affordable. The government fleet study identified site-power upgrades and upfront infrastructure costs as barriers, so obtain a site-specific assessment.
Typical installation sequence
- Define use: list the number of vans, arrival and departure times, required charging energy and whether visitors or employees will share the bays.
- Appoint an installer: ask for a survey covering cable routes, protective equipment, parking layout and future expansion.
- Check the network: establish whether the distribution network operator must complete pre-installation work or approve a connection upgrade.
- Obtain a complete quote: separate hardware, civil works, electrical upgrades, connection charges, commissioning and ongoing service costs.
- Install and operate: label bays, set access rules, record energy use and create a process for a failed charger.
Private charging at sites that vans already visit can also be shared between businesses. A 2022 analysis commissioned for the Climate Change Committee identified shared private infrastructure as a possible way to improve equipment use and reduce average daytime charging costs. Treat it as a potential local arrangement, not a service that is available everywhere.

Using public chargers as the main option
Public charging is viable for some tradespeople and service businesses with no driveway or workplace charger. UK Power Networks gives the example of a self-employed tradesperson charging around London when off-street charging is unavailable. The feasibility depends on the actual operating area, not a map showing that chargers exist somewhere nearby.

Audit a route in the vehicle you will buy
- List stations on the van’s normal routes and near likely overnight parking.
- Confirm the connector and charging power supported by the specific van.
- Check bay dimensions and access. A large van may block a bay or fail to reach a connector positioned for cars.
- Check opening hours, payment method, account requirements and whether the site permits commercial vehicles.
- Look for at least one alternative station near each critical route, then test the detour and likely waiting time.
- Drive or simulate the route at the busiest periods before promising customers a fixed schedule.
Fleet operators reported concerns about public-charging price, availability and working condition, along with finding a suitable space and waiting. A charger that works technically but adds a 30-minute queue can be more expensive to the business than its displayed pence-per-kilowatt-hour rate.
Energy Saving Trust pages contain public-charging examples based on October 2022 and January 2023 data. Those figures are historical and should not be used as current market prices. Obtain current tariffs for the networks and times your drivers will actually use.
What charging will cost
Calculate energy cost by location and time: energy drawn multiplied by the applicable tariff, plus any connection, session or parking fees. Then add the cost of the driver’s time and any detour. Compare that result with the diesel van’s fuel cost for the same route, but keep vehicle finance, insurance, maintenance, tax and depreciation as separate lines.
A 2022 CCC-commissioned analysis found depot overnight charging to be the cheapest per kilowatt-hour in its comparison unless drivers could use off-peak tariffs at private residential chargepoints. That is a charging-cost result, not a promise that an electric van has lower total ownership cost for every business. Public rapid charging can be particularly difficult to justify when it is the primary source and the van must wait during paid hours.

Eligibility, evidence and installation requirements apply; confirm the live rules before relying on the grant in a cash-flow plan.
Large infrastructure forecasts should not be mistaken for today’s coverage. A 2022 Element Energy analysis commissioned for the Climate Change Committee modelled 241,000 additional charge points in 2025 and 962,000 in 2035. It also modelled about 160,000 public charge points for van fleets by 2030 under its stated fleet-stock assumptions. These are scenario-based requirements, not counts of chargers installed.

Public charging consumes billable time
Fix: schedule charging during unavoidable breaks or customer-site dwell time, measure queues at the times you operate, and include the driver’s time in the cost model.
A charger is installed but cannot serve the fleet
Fix: obtain an electrical-capacity and connection assessment before signing an installation contract. Confirm connector compatibility, cable reach and bay dimensions with the chosen van.
Drivers and the business disagree about electricity reimbursement
Fix: document ownership, metering, evidence, rates, payment dates and the process when a driver changes home or leaves employment before the first vehicle is delivered.
A practical go/no-go process
- Collect route data: record daily distance, variation, payload and parking for every candidate van.
- Choose a primary charging location: home, workplace, shared site or public network. If it is public, identify two workable alternatives.
- Validate the vehicle: check current range claims, charging capability, load requirements and the reserve needed for your longest routine day.
- Price the complete system: include installation, network work, tariffs, fees, reimbursement, waiting and detours.
- Run a controlled trial: use one van on representative routes, including a long day and a charger-failure scenario, before replacing several vehicles.
- Set operating rules: specify which jobs the van may take, when it must charge, who authorises public charging and what happens if the plan fails.
Proceed when the longest normal route, payload and parking pattern are covered by a dependable primary charge and a realistic fallback. Delay or limit the purchase when the plan depends on unverified range, a single public charger or routine rapid-charging waits.
Bottom line for a small business
Electric vans are practical without a depot charger when charging is built around the way the business already works. Home charging is usually the cleanest no-depot solution for drivers with off-street parking; workplace or shared charging can work after a site-capacity check; public charging can support the operation only when compatible, reliable stations fit the routes and the time cost is acceptable. Start with route and payload data, secure the charging agreement, price current tariffs and test one vehicle under real conditions. If those checks pass, the absence of a depot charger is a constraint—not an automatic deal-breaker.
