There is no defensible brand-wide verdict that all Chery cars are reliable or unreliable yet. The most useful answer is model-specific: identify the exact Chery, check its VIN for recalls, verify that every remedy was completed, and assess its service history and local support. Chery Australia’s article states: “For a new brand like Chery, we can’t prove historical reliability.” That admission should be read literally. Reliability can vary with model, model year, engine or electric powertrain, software version, climate, driving pattern, servicing and the country in which the vehicle was sold. An Australian-market car may have different specifications, warranty terms, dealer coverage and recall obligations from an imported or overseas-market vehicle.

Why the brake-pipe notice deserves priority
The Tiggo 8 Pro 2.0 notice involves a possible brake-fluid leak and therefore a potential reduction in braking performance. It is a physical defect with a clear safety consequence, not merely an inconvenience. Ask the dealer what was inspected, what part was replaced or repositioned, and whether the remedy is recorded as complete. Do not assume that a vehicle advertised as “one owner” or “low kilometres” has been checked.

What the software recalls tell you
The E5 acoustic-alert notice and Tiggo 4 AEB-alarm notice concern warning functions. The notices establish a possible software condition in defined vehicles; they do not establish that every car has the condition, how frequently it occurs in the wider fleet, or that other Chery models share it. A completed software campaign is evidence that the specified remedy was applied, not a guarantee against every future electronic fault.
How to check a Chery before buying it
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record the model, model year, variant, engine or electric powertrain, first-registration date, country of original sale and 17-character VIN. “Tiggo 4” or “Tiggo 8” alone is not precise enough because recalls and warranty rules can be year- and variant-specific.
- Run the VIN through the relevant recall system. Use the official recall source for the vehicle’s market. Ask the seller or dealer for a current printout showing open and completed campaigns. Match the VIN on the result with the VIN on the windscreen, compliance plate and registration documents.
- Get unresolved campaigns fixed before completion. Recall repairs should normally be free through the authorised network. Put the appointment and promised remedy in writing. For a used purchase, make the contract conditional on completion of any open safety recall rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
- Audit the service history. Compare logbook entries and invoices with the applicable Chery schedule. Look for dates, odometer readings, oil and filter work where relevant, brake inspections, software updates and evidence of the correct fluids or parts. Missing invoices are not proof of neglect, but they increase uncertainty and weaken a warranty claim.
- Confirm warranty eligibility in writing. Ask the dealer to state the start date, expiry date, remaining distance allowance, exclusions and whether the vehicle is a private, imported or commercial-use car. Confirm that previous servicing meets the manufacturer’s requirements.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified inspector check accident repairs, underbody damage, fluid leaks, brakes, tyres, suspension, warning lights, battery condition on an electric model, diagnostic fault codes and the consistency of the service records. A recall campaign does not replace a condition inspection.
- Test the ownership support locally. Identify the nearest authorised service site, ask how warranty claims are booked and ask for an indicative lead time for parts for the exact model. A manufacturer’s statement that it has a support network is not the same as an independently measured repair-time guarantee.
- Test-drive with a checklist. Start the car from cold if possible. Check warning lights, infotainment restarts, camera and sensor operation, AEB and lane-support alerts in safe conditions, climate-control performance, transmission behaviour, steering vibration, brake-pedal feel and unusual noises. Do not deliberately trigger an emergency system on a public road.
Warranty, roadside assistance and servicing in Australia
Chery Australia advertises a seven-year, unlimited-kilometre new-vehicle warranty, subject to its terms, and an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty for the high-voltage battery, also subject to terms. The new-car cover begins at first registration. These are Australia-specific terms and should not be applied automatically to a vehicle sold in another country.

The owner is responsible for servicing in line with Chery’s guidelines. The warranty policy says damage related to improper or missing service may not be accepted, and directs warranty repairs through an authorised Chery dealer. Keep invoices, inspection sheets and campaign-completion records. If a dealer declines a claim, request the reason and the relevant policy clause in writing.

Predictable servicing or roadside assistance can reduce budgeting uncertainty, but neither is evidence that mechanical failures are rare. Coverage is valuable because it can limit the financial effect of a covered fault; it does not make a fault impossible.

There is no representative, model-by-model dataset in the available evidence that would justify calling any particular non-recall complaint a “common Chery problem.” Treat online anecdotes as individual experiences rather than prevalence statistics. Instead, investigate the systems most likely to affect your specific vehicle’s risk and inconvenience.
Software and driver-assistance functions
Check whether all software campaigns have been completed, whether the infotainment system reboots, whether cameras and sensors remain available after startup, and whether warning messages clear correctly. Ask the dealer for the current software version and campaign history. A warning sound or assistance-system issue may not stop the engine, but it can affect safety information and compliance.

Brakes, fluids and underbody components
Look for brake-fluid level changes, wetness around lines and calipers, corrosion, damaged shields and uneven pad wear. On a test drive, the pedal should feel consistent and the car should stop in a straight line without vibration. Any suspected leak or brake warning requires prompt professional assessment.
Parts and dealer access
Reliability includes how quickly a vehicle can be repaired. Before buying, ask the local dealer which parts are stocked, whether common service items are routinely available, and how the workshop handles software diagnosis. Do not convert an optimistic parts-availability statement into a promised turnaround time; obtain a realistic estimate for your location and model.

ANCAP evaluates crash protection and safety-assistance performance, not breakdown frequency, corrosion, durability, repair rates or long-term ownership cost. Its Australian-market assessment for the Chery C5, covering petrol and battery-electric variants from May 2025, reports occupant-protection and safety-assistance scores and describes active-safety testing. It notes that updated lane-support software was tested and that the vehicle did not respond in a small number of emergency lane-keeping scenarios.

Those findings belong in a safety decision, separately from reliability. Check that an ANCAP result applies to the exact variant and model year you are considering; do not use a high safety score as evidence that the car will require fewer repairs.
Buying new versus buying used
A new Chery
- You can choose the original market specification and start with a documented warranty period.
- Early ownership may reveal software updates or campaigns that were not known when the vehicle was first delivered, so keep contact details current and respond to recall notices.
- Confirm the servicing schedule, roadside-assistance renewal rules and capped-price inclusions before signing.
A used Chery
- The individual car’s VIN, campaign status and service records matter more than the badge alone.
- Check whether the warranty transferred, whether use was commercial and whether an imported vehicle is covered by the Australian policy.

Consider another vehicle when the seller will not provide the VIN, refuses an independent inspection, cannot explain a gap in servicing, dismisses an open safety recall, or offers no credible plan for a brake-related campaign. Walk away as well when warning lights remain on, braking feels abnormal, the car has unexplained fluid loss, or the ownership support you need is not available locally. These are condition and process failures, not a claim that every Chery has the same defect.

Score the exact car rather than the brand. A sensible decision has five evidence columns:

If several columns are unknown, the risk is uncertainty rather than a proven Chery failure. Negotiate only after quantifying the uncertainty: a missing invoice, unresolved recall, worn tyres and an unclear warranty are separate issues that can add cost and downtime.
The Bottom Line
Chery cars cannot yet be assigned a reliable or unreliable brand-wide verdict from the available independent evidence. Buy or keep one on the strength of the specific vehicle’s VIN recall status, completed servicing, inspected condition, written warranty eligibility and practical local support.
