For buyers in the United States, Lexus currently has the stronger brand-level dependability signal, but that does not make every Lexus a better long-term purchase than every BMW. The latest J.D. Power study placed Lexus first among premium brands for problems reported after three years. Long-run value still depends on the exact model, engine and drivetrain, model year, mileage, service records, warranty coverage and the repair budget you can sustain. A well-maintained BMW can be a better choice than a neglected Lexus, while a Lexus with a documented history may be the safer used-car bet than an equivalent BMW with missing records.
What the current evidence actually says
Most published reliability figures answer a narrower question than shoppers assume. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems reported by original owners after three years. It is useful for comparing recent model-year cohorts, but it does not measure how many cars reach 10 or 15 years, nor does it calculate each owner’s lifetime repair bill.

In the 2026 release, J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton said, “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever.” That observation explains why the data is relevant, but the three-year window remains important. A PP100 score counts reported problems; it does not predict the maximum age of an individual vehicle.

Why Lexus has the statistical edge—but not an automatic win
A lower PP100 number means fewer reported problems in the study population. Lexus’s 151 PP100 in the 2026 study is therefore a favorable brand-level result. The 2025 result of 140 PP100 against an industry average of 202 PP100 points in the same direction. However, year-to-year figures involve different vehicles and owners, so they are not a controlled test showing that a particular BMW model will fail more often than a particular Lexus.

Brand averages also combine sedans, crossovers, hybrid systems, engines, transmissions and electronic packages with different risk profiles. A simple badge comparison can hide more important differences in turbocharging, all-wheel-drive hardware, battery systems, cooling layouts and optional technology. Use the survey as a starting prior, then verify evidence for the exact vehicle you might buy.
Long-term ownership is more than dependability
Decide what “better” means before comparing cars. A long-term ownership decision normally combines four separate questions:
- How often will the vehicle need unscheduled repairs? This is the closest match to a dependability survey.
- How expensive are routine and wear-item services? Oil, filters, brakes, tires, fluids and suspension components can dominate an older car’s budget even when it never suffers a major failure.
- What happens when warranty or complimentary maintenance ends? Early ownership spending can look artificially low when the manufacturer or dealer is paying for covered work.
- Can you obtain competent service locally? A specialist or dealer with reasonable scheduling and transparent estimates can change the practical cost of ownership.
Consumer Reports’ 2025 analysis asked members what they paid out of pocket during the previous 12 months and examined cumulative costs by vehicle age. It excludes collision work and warns that inflation, tariffs, warranty coverage and complimentary maintenance affect the estimates. Steven Elek, who oversees the publication’s auto data analytics, said, “The difference to maintain a car, on average, between some brands can be thousands of dollars over a 10-year time frame.” That statement establishes that brand differences can become substantial, but it does not provide a verified 10-year BMW-versus-Lexus figure.
Compare the actual cars, not the badges
Use the following process when you have a shortlist. It prevents a favorable brand average from overpowering the facts of a particular used vehicle.

- Match the vehicle type. Compare cars in the same class, such as compact luxury crossover with compact luxury crossover, rather than a small sedan against a large performance SUV.
- Match model year and generation. A redesign can introduce a new engine, transmission, electrical architecture or infotainment system. Treat each generation as its own reliability question.
- Match powertrain and drivetrain. Record the engine, hybrid configuration, transmission and front-, rear- or all-wheel drive. Do not assume a naturally aspirated model shares the risk profile of a turbocharged or plug-in variant.
- Normalize mileage and use. A 35,000-mile one-owner car and a 95,000-mile example used for short trips have different maintenance exposure. Ask how the miles were accumulated and whether the car was regularly driven to operating temperature.
- Collect documentary evidence. Obtain invoices, inspection reports, recall completion records and the current maintenance schedule. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a service history.
- Price the next 24 months. List due services, tires, brakes, batteries, fluids and any deferred work identified by an independent inspection. Ask a qualified local shop for written estimates rather than relying on generic internet averages.
- Check coverage in writing. Verify the in-service date, remaining new-car or certified-used warranty, exclusions, transfer rules and roadside benefits. A warranty that has expired or excludes a known component should not be counted as protection.
How to build a realistic ownership budget
Separate predictable spending from low-frequency, high-cost events. A useful worksheet has four columns: scheduled maintenance, wear items, diagnostic or repair labor, and parts or assemblies. Enter the interval, mileage, evidence that the work was done, and the amount quoted by a shop that can service the vehicle.
Scheduled maintenance
Include services specified for the exact model and powertrain: fluid changes, filters, spark plugs where applicable, inspections and software or recall work. Missing an interval can increase risk and can also reduce the credibility of a seller’s claimed maintenance history.
Wear items
Brakes, tires, 12-volt batteries, suspension joints, belts and wiper components wear according to mileage, climate, road quality and driving style. Performance-oriented tires or larger wheels may cost more to replace than base configurations, regardless of brand.

Set aside a reserve for electrical faults, cooling-system components, sensors, air-conditioning equipment and drivetrain repairs once coverage ends. Do not turn a generic reserve into a promised BMW or Lexus average; the available evidence does not establish a single defensible dollar figure for either brand.

Opportunity cost and downtime
A lower repair invoice is not the whole story if parts are back-ordered or a specialist has a long wait. Ask local shops about appointment lead times, loaner policies and diagnostic fees. These practical details matter more than a national ranking when the car is your daily transportation.
Warranty, service access and the owner’s location
Warranty and service access can reverse a paper advantage. Confirm that an authorized dealer or independent specialist near you has experience with the specific engine and electronic systems. Get two estimates when a repair is not urgent, and request the diagnostic findings, failed part, labor hours and warranty treatment in writing.
The J.D. Power 2025 Customer Service Index should be read narrowly. Lexus’s 900 score is reported among premium brands, while BMW’s 887 appears in the premium car segment; those labels are not a strict head-to-head brand ranking. The index covers service experiences for owners and lessees of one- to three-year-old vehicles and does not measure long-run repair expense. A pleasant service visit is valuable, but it cannot substitute for a maintenance reserve.

When Lexus is the more defensible choice
Lexus is the easier recommendation when your priority is minimizing reported problems and you are choosing between otherwise comparable, well-documented vehicles. The latest U.S. dependability result places Lexus first among premium brands, and the previous edition also placed it first overall. Buyers who plan to keep a car beyond the warranty period, have limited access to specialist repair, or want a conservative risk profile may reasonably give Lexus the edge.

That preference should still be model-specific. Verify that the candidate car has completed its maintenance, passes an independent inspection and has no unresolved recalls or warning lights. A Lexus with accident damage, neglected fluids or a failing hybrid battery is not protected by the brand average.

Choose a BMW when the specific car satisfies your priorities and the ownership plan supports it. A documented service history, remaining warranty, favorable inspection and a trusted local specialist can make a BMW sensible even though Lexus has the stronger aggregate dependability signal. Some drivers also value a BMW’s driving characteristics or available configurations more than the lowest possible repair risk; those preferences are legitimate, but they should be evaluated separately from reliability evidence.
Before buying, obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a shop familiar with that BMW’s engine and chassis. Ask the technician to identify deferred maintenance, fluid leaks, cooling-system condition, electronic fault codes, tire age and suspension wear. Price those items immediately instead of assuming they will wait until a later ownership phase.
A used-car inspection checklist
- Verify the VIN, title status, accident history and recall completion.
- Compare the odometer with inspection and service dates for consistency.
- Review invoices for regular oil and fluid service, not just a stamped booklet.
- Scan for stored diagnostic codes, including codes that are not currently illuminating a warning lamp.
- Inspect cold-start behavior, idle quality, transmission engagement and cooling-system leaks.
- Measure tire tread and brake wear, and check whether replacement sizes match the vehicle’s specification.
- Test climate control, driver-assistance features, windows, locks, cameras and infotainment.
- Confirm that all keys, charging equipment and security devices are present.
- Obtain written estimates for every issue rated urgent or soon due.
Think in ownership phases
Years zero to three
Warranty and complimentary maintenance can suppress out-of-pocket spending. The J.D. Power dependability studies are most relevant to this early period because they survey original owners after three years. Do not extrapolate the result directly to a 10-year-old used car.

Years four to six
Coverage may be ending, and wear items become more significant. Confirm which scheduled services were completed and start funding a repair reserve before a warning light appears.
Years seven to ten and beyond
Age, mileage, previous repairs and environmental exposure dominate the decision. At this stage, condition and records usually matter more than the original badge. Reassess whether annual repairs, downtime and insurance still fit the vehicle’s value and your budget.
Common mistakes that produce a bad answer
- Treating PP100 as a lifetime survival rate. It is a three-year, owner-reported problem measure.
- Mixing model years and powertrains. A brand average cannot resolve a comparison between unrelated vehicles.
- Calling service satisfaction a cost study. The Customer Service Index measures experiences, not total repair bills.
- Using a generic 10-year dollar claim. No verified source here supplies a BMW-versus-Lexus total for a named model pair.
- Ignoring coverage and local labor. Warranty terms, shop rates, parts availability and downtime vary by location.
- Buying the cheapest example. A low purchase price can simply reflect deferred maintenance that appears in the first year.
The practical decision rule
If two comparable vehicles have similar mileage, condition, equipment and documented service, Lexus has the stronger current U.S. dependability evidence and is the conservative long-term choice. If the BMW has materially better records, remaining coverage, a cleaner inspection and dependable local service, it may be the lower-risk purchase in practice. Make the final decision from the specific car’s evidence and a written two-year budget, using brand-level studies as context rather than as a promise.
