Android Auto 12.4 Arrived in 2024 With Bug Fixes, Not a Driving Overhaul

Android Auto 12.4 was a real 2024 release, but its notes cite only bug fixes and general improvements. Here’s what the version means and why Google Play is the safer update route.

Android Auto 12.4 was a real stable release, with builds appearing in July and August 2024. But its published changelog says only “Bug fixes and other improvements”; it does not document a new driving feature or a measured performance gain. As of August 18, 2026, version 12.4 is an old release, not a current update.

What Android Auto 12.4 included

The stable release family was Android Auto 12.4.6428. APKMirror lists Google-signed build 12.4.642804, an arm64-v8a variant marked for Android 8.0 and later, uploaded July 13, 2024. Later stable variants included 12.4.642814, uploaded July 20, and 12.4.642824, uploaded August 2. Those final digits identify particular builds within the release family. See the 12.4.6428 release listing and the 12.4.642804 build details.

The listing’s change description is “Bug fixes and other improvements.” It does not specify which bugs were fixed or promise faster startup, improved GPS accuracy, smoother animations, fewer disconnects, a redesigned interface, or new apps. A maintenance update can improve reliability without changing what drivers see, but whether it helps depends on the fault and setup.

Stable and beta numbers are different branches

APKMirror also listed beta or daily builds 12.4.1427 and 12.4.1428. The 12.4.1427 listing is dated July 4, 2024; it is not the same stable build family as 12.4.6428. View the 12.4.1427 listing. An APK listing’s upload date also does not establish when Google Play offered that build to every user.

Why “smoother” depends on the car and phone

General bug fixes might help with crashes, freezes, connection failures, or app launches, but the published notes do not confirm any particular fix. A driver who sees smoother operation after updating may be benefiting from a fix specific to that device or vehicle; that is not evidence of a universal improvement attributable to 12.4.

Android Auto projects selected phone apps to a compatible vehicle display. It is different from Google built-in, where Google services are integrated into a vehicle’s infotainment system. A projection problem can involve the phone, Google Play services, Maps or Waze, the USB cable, wireless hardware, vehicle firmware, or mobile data—not just the Android Auto app.

How to update safely

For ordinary use, let Google Play offer the version appropriate to your phone and rollout. Android Auto is integrated into supported phones for car-display use; most drivers do not need to install a separate app just to use it. Google’s app-download guidance and setup instructions explain the official route.

  3. If the update or connection does not take effect, restart the phone and infotainment system.
  4. Test the connection while parked, not while driving.

In 2026, Google Play should be the default: version 12.4 is not automatically the right version to install, particularly if the phone already has a newer release. APKMirror’s archived listings show that stable 12.4 builds were available as Google-signed APKs, but a third-party download is not proof of a universal Google Play rollout. Sideloading also requires choosing the right architecture and package variant, and installing an older APK over a newer one can run into downgrade or signature problems. Avoid it unless you have a specific, well-understood reason and accept the security and compatibility risks.

Check phone and vehicle compatibility

Google’s current requirements are a guide to using Android Auto today, not a guarantee that every detail applied to every 12.4 build in 2024. A car’s USB port alone does not prove that it supports Android Auto; availability can depend on model year, trim, region, manufacturer settings, and infotainment firmware. Check the vehicle maker’s compatibility information as well as Google’s requirements and availability guidance.

Connection Google’s current baseline What to check
Wired Android 9.0 or later, an active mobile data plan, and a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver. Use a good-quality USB data cable and a vehicle port that supports data.
Wireless A compatible phone and vehicle or receiver, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi; Google lists Android 11 or later for wireless projection, subject to device and regional requirements. Confirm that both ends support wireless Android Auto. Android Auto is not available on Android Go devices, according to Google.

These are current Google support criteria; they should not be confused with APK metadata. For example, APKMirror marks the specific 12.4.642804 package as Android 8.0+, but the ability to install a package is not the same as Google’s current supported-use requirement for wired projection.

Spedal 2026 2-in-1 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter | Ultra Mini Dongle, Converts Wired to Wireless, WiFi 6 & Bluetooth 5.4, Plug & Play, Low Latency, Auto Reconnect
  • Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
  • Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
  • Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
  • Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.

Troubleshoot connection problems that remain

If Android Auto still fails after an update, use Google’s troubleshooting guide and isolate the connection type before assuming the app version is at fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wired connection drops or does not start

  • Try another high-quality USB data cable. Google recommends one shorter than 3 feet (1 meter); avoid hubs, extensions, damaged connectors, and charge-only cables.
  • Check that the vehicle’s port carries data rather than providing power only. Prefer the phone maker’s cable or a standards-compliant alternative.
  • Confirm that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment settings, then restart the head unit.
  • Check the vehicle or receiver maker’s site for a firmware update. If changing cars, remove old pairings and set up the new vehicle again.

Forget previously connected cars

On the phone, go to Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Android Auto → Previously connected cars, open the menu, and select Forget all cars. Then reconnect the vehicle.

Wireless setup fails

  • During initial setup, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
  • Put the vehicle in Park and leave its infotainment system on; pair the phone and vehicle over Bluetooth first.
  • Verify that the phone and vehicle both support wireless Android Auto. A vehicle that supports only wired projection will not gain wireless support from the 12.4 app update.

The fault is reproducible after those checks

Update the navigation app and Google Play services, then restart the phone and vehicle system. If the problem persists, consult the vehicle manufacturer and consider submitting an Android Auto bug report. Google’s bug-report procedure requires enabling Android Auto developer settings and force-debug logging before submission.

Should you install Android Auto 12.4 now?

No—not as a target version if Google Play offers a newer supported release. Version 12.4 is relevant as a record of a 2024 rollout, not as a reason to downgrade or sideload today. If Google Play offers an update, install it through the store; if the problem continues, check the cable, compatibility, and vehicle firmware rather than assuming a version number alone will make every drive smoother.
