Android Auto 12.9 Rolled Out in September 2024: What It Actually Added

Android Auto 12.9 was a phased September 2024 release, not a current 2026 update. Here are its reported Maps and EV charging changes, what was not included, and how to check for it.

Android Auto 12.9 was a September 2024 update, not a current 2026 release. Its reported changes were modest: clearer Google Maps lane guidance, NACS-related EV charging information, and general bug fixes. Google released it in stages, so “full rollout” did not mean every driver received it at once.

When did Android Auto 12.9 roll out?

The beta appeared for testers around September 16, 2024. The stable version began reaching ordinary Google Play users around September 24–25, with reports on September 27 describing early production rollout waves. Those dates mark availability in the release channel, not simultaneous delivery to every phone. Xataka Android’s beta report and stable-release coverage describe the timeline; Gizchina’s September 27 report likewise notes the staged rollout.

As of August 2026, 12.9 is historical. Google’s public Android Auto pages do not establish one canonical consumer-facing “latest version” number, so there is no basis for calling 12.9 current.

What did Android Auto 12.9 change?

Clearer Google Maps lane guidance

The most visible change reported with 12.9 was improved lane guidance in Google Maps: more useful visual cues to help a driver choose the correct lane before a maneuver. This is a presentation improvement to navigation, not a new mapping service. Its appearance can depend on Maps, the route, region, and the vehicle’s display layout, so drivers should not expect an identical screen in every car. Xataka Android reported the change.

NACS-related charging information for EVs

Coverage also associated 12.9 with support for recognizing NACS, the connector used by Tesla vehicles and at Tesla Supercharger locations, in EV charging searches and routing. The practical value is connector-aware charging information that can help surface potentially compatible locations; it is most relevant to EV drivers. Computer Hoy reported the NACS-related change.

Connector recognition is not a promise that every Supercharger is available to every non-Tesla vehicle. Access depends on the vehicle, any required approved adapter, network rules, and regional availability. An Android Auto update cannot make an incompatible vehicle or charger work together.

General fixes, without a detailed public changelog

Google’s public release notes were broad rather than a feature-by-feature changelog. General bug fixes and stability improvements were associated with the update, but a more precise list is not established. The useful distinction is that lane guidance and NACS-related charging information were reported changes; the update should not be treated as a major redesign.

What was not confirmed as a 12.9 feature?

Reports around the beta found no broad delivery of Gemini Live or a redesigned music player. Google Maps incident reporting also should not be treated as a universal 12.9 feature: some users may have seen it through account- or server-side enablement, but that does not establish it as part of the app version for everyone. Contemporaneous beta coverage described expected features that were absent.

Android Auto can change independently of its installed app package. A feature may be delivered through Google Maps, activated remotely for selected accounts, or appear differently depending on the vehicle’s infotainment system. Google’s Android Auto product information notes that some changes roll out server-side. Installing 12.9 therefore neither guarantees every feature nor proves that a missing feature is a bug.

How to check for Android Auto 12.9

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Android phone.
  2. Tap your profile image, then choose Manage apps & device.
  3. Open the available updates list and update Android Auto if it appears.
  4. If the new behavior does not show up, restart the phone and reconnect it to the vehicle. Update Google Maps as well if you are checking navigation changes.

If Android Auto is not listed for update, check again later rather than assuming the phone is incompatible: Google distributes updates in stages, and availability can vary by account, device, region, and rollout wave. Updating the app may not immediately enable a feature controlled by Maps, server-side settings, or vehicle support. The Google Play path and phased-release context are covered in Xataka Android’s rollout report.

Should you sideload an APK?

Google Play is the safer default. Manually installing an APK from an unofficial mirror can expose you to tampered files, an incompatible package, signature conflicts, or future update problems; downgrading can also require removing updates or clearing data. A sideload cannot force Google to enable a server-side feature. If you choose that route despite the risks, use a reputable source and make sure the package matches your device; do not download a random APK simply because Play has not offered the update. Gizchina discussed manual installation.

Why might a feature still be missing?

  • The rollout or server-side switch has not reached you: the app version and account-level feature availability are not the same thing.
  • Maps or another relevant service is out of date: navigation behavior may depend on Google Maps as well as Android Auto.
  • Your display or route differs: vehicle screen layout, route type, and region can affect what appears.
  • The feature was not a universal 12.9 release: previews, reports about selected users, and later announcements are not proof of broad delivery in this version.
  • EV connector or network details do not match: NACS information does not override vehicle compatibility, adapter approval, or charging-network access.

What if Android Auto has connection or audio problems?

Reports of wireless audio stuttering around the 12.9-to-13.x period were inconsistent and do not show that 12.9 caused the problem for all users. Later Google support-community guidance said a fix was included in version 13.2 or later, though users in the discussions reported differing experiences. See the Google support-community thread with later guidance and the related discussion.

Spedal 2026 2-in-1 Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto Adapter | Ultra Mini Dongle, Converts Wired to Wireless, WiFi 6 & Bluetooth 5.4, Plug & Play, Low Latency, Auto Reconnect
  • Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
  • Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
  • Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
  • Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.

For a connection problem, try these checks in order:

  1. Restart the phone and the vehicle’s head unit.
  2. For wireless stuttering, test a wired connection if the car supports it.
  3. For wired disconnects, try a suitable data-capable USB cable and inspect the phone and car ports.
  4. Remove and re-pair the phone with the vehicle.
  5. Update Android Auto, Google Maps, and Google Play services.
  6. If the issue began after an update, report it through Android Auto support rather than relying on an old APK.

Does Android Auto 12.9 make a car compatible?

No. Android Auto runs from a compatible Android phone and projects an interface to a compatible car display or aftermarket receiver. Android Automotive OS is built into a vehicle’s infotainment system and is a separate platform with different release behavior; the names do not refer to interchangeable software. See Android Developers’ explanation of Android for Cars releases.

Google says most wired Android Auto connections require a phone running Android 9.0 or later, but phone software alone is not enough: the car or receiver must also be compatible. Wireless projection has additional phone and vehicle or head-unit requirements. A wired connection needs an appropriate cable, and the relevant Google services should be up to date. Check Google’s Android Auto compatibility information for requirements that apply to your setup.

How does 12.9 compare with Google’s later Android Auto plans?

Google’s May 2026 announcement described a next-generation Android Auto roadmap, including Material 3 Expressive design, widgets, edge-to-edge Maps, immersive navigation, video while parked, and expanded Gemini capabilities, with updates planned during 2026. These are later-generation plans, not features of the September 2024 version 12.9. The announcement is at Google’s Android in cars update. For Google’s later Gemini-related hands-free information, see its Android Auto support page.
