Android Auto 12.2.6424 is an archived Google-signed stable release, not the current stable version. APKMirror lists its variants as released between June 15 and July 3, 2024, and its archive includes much newer builds. Most drivers should install Android Auto through Google Play; sideload 12.2 only for a specific compatibility or testing reason.

Should you download Android Auto 12.2?
For ordinary use, no: install or update Android Auto through Google Play. Google’s Android Auto page directs users to the Play Store, and the APKMirror version archive shows that releases newer than 12.2 were available by 2026. The precise latest version can change, so check the archive or Play Store at the time you install.
Version 12.2 may make sense if you have a documented compatibility reason, need to reproduce an older setup, or are testing earlier behavior. APKMirror’s notes for 12.2.6424 say “bug fixes and other improvements”; they do not establish a particular new feature or a guaranteed fix for any phone, car, or connection issue.

Choose the right 12.2 APK variant
The 12.2.6424 archive includes variants such as 12.2.642404-release, 12.2.642413-release, 12.2.642414-release, 12.2.642417-release, 12.2.642418-release, 12.2.642423-release, 12.2.642424-release, 12.2.642427-release, and 12.2.642428-release. They are not interchangeable just because they share a version family.
arm64-v8a: intended for 64-bit ARM phones, common among modern Android devices.armeabi-v7a: intended for older 32-bit ARM devices.x86orx86_64: mainly relevant to certain emulators or unusual Intel-based Android hardware.nodpi: not tied to a particular screen-density bucket; choose it when offered for the correct architecture.
Check your phone’s specifications or use a trusted device-information utility to identify its architecture. Do not choose by the largest file or the newest-looking suffix. The arm64 listing also reports target SDK Android 15 (API 35), but that is not the same as the minimum Android version and does not guarantee compatibility with every phone.

How to sideload the archived 12.2 release
Sideloading is a fallback for users who understand APK variants and rollback risks. Confirm that your phone meets the listed Android 8.0 minimum, supports the chosen architecture, and has working Google Play Services. You also need a compatible Android Auto vehicle display or aftermarket receiver; wired use requires a data-capable USB cable, while wireless use has its own phone and vehicle requirements.
- Record your current version. Open Android Settings, find Android Auto in the app list, and note its version. Back up or note any settings you may need to restore.
- Open the correct APKMirror listing. Start from the 12.2.6424 release page, then choose the variant matching your phone. Review the listing immediately before downloading for its architecture, Android minimum, and file details.
- Allow installation from the download app when prompted. Android may ask you to permit your browser or file manager to install unknown apps. On many recent devices, look under Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps; labels and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer. If needed, search Settings for “Install unknown apps.”
- Open the downloaded file. Tap the APK in your downloads or file manager and review Android’s installation prompt. If it identifies a split package that requires a bundle installer, do not treat it as a plain APK; use the listing’s specified package format or choose a compatible single APK.
- Complete installation and connect. Accept the prompt, then launch Android Auto from Settings or connect the phone to the vehicle and follow setup instructions.
- Verify the installed version. Check Android Auto’s app information in Settings.
- Decide how to handle updates. Leave Google Play updates enabled for normal use. If you deliberately need to remain on 12.2, manage automatic updates for Android Auto in its Play Store listing; staying on an old build can mean missing later bug fixes and compatibility changes.
Android’s compatibility documentation describes per-source installation permissions; it does not imply that sideloaded apps are vetted by Google Play. See the Android 12 compatibility definition for the relevant platform requirements.
Check the APK’s identity and download safely
APKMirror reports that the 12.2.6424 files are signed by Google LLC and provides certificate information. A matching signature can establish that a file is signed by the same signing identity and has not changed since signing; it does not make APKMirror a Google distribution channel, guarantee device compatibility, or validate copies from unrelated sites. Compare the full certificate fingerprint on the listing rather than relying on shortened fingerprint fragments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Use the unmodified Google-signed release; avoid “modded,” “premium,” or “unlocked” APKs.
- Confirm the version, architecture, Android minimum, and package details on the download page before installing.
- If the file fails verification or its details differ from the listing, delete it and do not install it.
- Do not disable Android protections broadly to force an installation.
Downgrade risks and returning to the current release
Installing 12.2 over a newer build may be blocked because Android prevents the downgrade, the signature differs, the architecture or package format is wrong, or the download is damaged. Do not erase app data as the first response. Removing updates or uninstalling Android Auto may reset local preferences or pairing history, and Android may not permit full removal if the app is integrated into the system.

- Keep Your Phone in Your Pocket: Turn factory wired CarPlay or Android Auto into a wireless setup and keep using your car’s original screen. This 2-in-1 wireless adapter is ideal for households with both iPhone and Android phones sharing a vehicle. Connects to one phone at a time; disconnect the current phone before connecting another.
- Plug and Play for Everyday Drives: Just plug the adapter into your car’s USB data port and pair your phone via Bluetooth. After the initial setup, it reconnects automatically on later drives, so you can skip the usual plug-and-unplug routine—whether it’s your morning commute or a quick errand. Keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
- Less Clutter Around the Console: A compact wireless adapter that helps reduce phone cable clutter running across your console every time you drive. The mini dongle takes up little space and includes two extension cables for USB-A and USB-C data ports, making the adapter easier to position around recessed or hard-to-reach ports.
- Your Usual Apps, Now Wireless: Follow your route, put on a playlist, take a call, or use voice commands through CarPlay or Android Auto. Bluetooth 5.4 handles pairing, while Wi-Fi 6 carries the wireless connection. Works with your car’s supported steering wheel, knob, and touchscreen controls, with fewer phone cables to manage.
- Check the Fit Before You Buy: Your car needs factory wired CarPlay for a compatible iPhone (iOS 10 or later), or factory wired Android Auto for a compatible Android phone running Android 11 or later. Connect your phone with a USB data cable first to check that the matching system works. Not for BMW, Tesla, or aftermarket head units. Video playback, screen mirroring are not supported.
- Try installing the correctly matched APK over the existing version.
- If Android reports that it is older or incompatible, stop and recheck the listing and installed version. Do not use a modified package to bypass the warning.
- If you still need to roll back, consider removing updates or uninstalling only after noting that settings may be reset; restart the phone before trying again.
- If 12.2 does not work reliably, install Android Auto from Google Play to return to the current available release.
Troubleshoot Android Auto 12.2 installation and connection problems
“App not installed”
Common causes include an architecture mismatch, Android below the listed minimum, an attempted downgrade, signature conflict, low storage, an incomplete download, or a split package opened as though it were a standalone APK.
- Check the phone’s architecture and Android version against the exact listing.
- Confirm whether the file is a single APK or a package that needs a compatible installer.
- Delete a partial download, download the matching variant again, and check available storage.
- Restart the phone and retry. If installation still fails, use the Play Store release rather than forcing the archived APK.
Android Auto installs but has no launcher icon
Depending on Android version and manufacturer, Android Auto may be integrated as a service rather than shown as a conventional launcher app. Open its app-information page from Settings, or connect the phone to the vehicle and follow the setup prompts. Google’s Android Auto platform overview explains that compatible apps expose supported activities to a car display; installing an ordinary phone app does not automatically make it available on the head unit.
The phone and car will not connect
- Restart the phone and infotainment system.
- For a wired connection, try a known-good USB data cable and a different vehicle USB port if available.
- Unlock the phone during its first connection and accept the setup prompts.
- For wireless setup, confirm the vehicle supports it and re-pair Bluetooth as directed by the vehicle and phone.
- Remove the car from Android Auto’s previously connected cars list, then pair again.
- If the app repeatedly crashes, clear its cache from Android Settings.
- Check that Google Play Services and Google Maps are current, and install the current Play Store Android Auto version if 12.2 remains unstable.
Changing the APK cannot fix every connection fault: phone software, vehicle firmware, cable quality, receiver hardware, and Google services can all affect the result.

The app updates itself or a feature is missing
Google Play may replace a manually installed older build when automatic updates are enabled. If you keep 12.2 for testing, manage updates for Android Auto specifically rather than disabling updates for every app. A missing feature may have arrived after 12.2, be controlled by a server-side rollout, be unavailable in your country, depend on the car or phone, or belong to Android Automotive OS rather than phone-based Android Auto. Downgrading is not a reliable way to restore every historical interface or feature.
Alternatives if 12.2 is not the right build
- Current Google Play release: the normal choice for users who want current compatibility and updates.
- Google Play beta: for users who knowingly want prerelease testing, not as a stability fix.
- A later archived stable build: consider a newer release if 12.2 is incompatible but you have a reason not to use the Play Store version; APKMirror’s version archive lists later releases.
- Vehicle or head-unit firmware: investigate this when the fault is vehicle-side.
- Cable or wireless hardware: consider physical connectivity only when symptoms point to a cable, port, or wireless adapter rather than app compatibility.
Android Auto is not Android Automotive OS
Android Auto runs from a compatible phone and projects supported experiences to a vehicle display. Android Automotive OS is built into some vehicles and has a different app and update model. An Android Auto APK is not a way to install apps on an Android Automotive vehicle system.
