Neither is automatically better. A 10-speed automatic offers two more forward ratios and may keep an engine closer to an efficient operating range, while an 8-speed can deliver equally good fuel economy, smoothness and durability when it is well matched and calibrated. Gear count alone cannot establish a winner.
For an actual purchase, compare the exact model year, engine, transmission calibration, official fuel-economy rating, shift behavior, maintenance schedule, recalls and service history. The evidence available does not provide a controlled, everyday-driving test of otherwise equivalent vehicles fitted with 8-speed and 10-speed automatics, so any universal claim that one configuration saves a specific percentage of fuel or lasts longer goes beyond what is established.

What the numbers mean
An automatic transmission’s speed count is the number of selectable forward gear ratios. An 8-speed has eight such ratios; a 10-speed has ten. Both also have reverse and a neutral position, and both use a control system to select ratios according to vehicle speed, throttle position, load, road grade and other inputs.
The extra ratios do not mean a 10-speed has a larger engine or greater maximum power. They provide more steps between the lowest and highest ratios. That can let engineers choose a relatively low ratio for launching, several intermediate ratios for acceleration and a tall top ratio for cruising. Whether those choices improve the driving experience depends on the actual ratios, final-drive gearing, engine torque curve, control software, vehicle weight and aerodynamics.

Why gear count became a design target
As engines became more efficient and emissions requirements tightened, manufacturers looked for ways to keep an engine near its most efficient speed and load more often. EPA explains that additional transmission speeds can create more opportunities to operate in an efficient range, but it also notes that transmission friction affects efficiency. More gears therefore create an opportunity, not a guaranteed result.
NHTSA’s regulatory analysis describes diminishing returns as speed counts rise. Additional ratios can bring potential gains, but they can also add hardware, weight, friction and more opportunities for a driver to perceive a shift. The practical result is that a carefully tuned 8-speed may outperform a poorly calibrated 10-speed in a particular vehicle.
Fuel economy: what is actually proven
The strongest evidence does not answer the popular question with a simple “10-speed wins.” The available studies compare different transmission generations or designs, not a matched vehicle pair that differs only by an 8-speed versus a 10-speed automatic in ordinary driving.
| Evidence | What it says | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| EPA, 2025 report covering model year 2024 | 8-speed transmissions equipped 33% of new vehicles. Vehicles with nine or more speeds accounted for more than 20%. | The report does not give the 10-speed share alone and does not rank 8-speed and 10-speed fuel economy. |
| EPA and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 2016 | The tested 8-speed group used 6.5% less fuel on combined city-and-highway cycles than the tested 5-speed group. | This is not an 8-speed-versus-10-speed result and is not a promise for every vehicle. |
| SAE technical paper, 2015 | An approximately 8-to-9 ratio spread can typically be suitable for fuel efficiency and is commonly achievable with 8- to 10-speed transmissions. | This is a technical observation, not a consumer road-test average or a guaranteed advantage for either count. |
Those figures put the technology in context: 8-speed units are widely used, higher-speed transmissions are common, and moving from older 5- or 6-speed designs can provide measurable benefits. None of that isolates the effect of moving from eight forward ratios to ten.

Why an extra ratio may help
- Closer operating steps: Smaller gaps between ratios can reduce the engine-speed change during an upshift or downshift.
- More opportunities to select a tall cruising ratio: At a steady highway speed, the control system may use a low engine speed if the engine has enough torque and the road load is modest.
- More flexibility under changing load: A transmission can choose an intermediate ratio instead of making a larger jump when a mild grade or headwind appears.
These benefits only materialize if the transmission actually uses the available ratios. A calibration may hold a lower gear for responsiveness, skip gears during a large load change or unlock the top ratio on a grade. A vehicle’s official fuel-economy label reflects the complete powertrain and test procedure, not the speed count in isolation.
Why the 10-speed may not save more fuel
- Added friction and mass: More components can create additional mechanical losses or weight, offsetting part of the theoretical ratio benefit.
- Engine and final-drive mismatch: If the engine’s useful torque range, axle ratio or tire size does not suit the transmission, extra ratios cannot fix the underlying mismatch.
- Control strategy: Frequent shifts, torque-converter operation or a preference for quick acceleration can reduce the benefit of a taller ratio.
- Driving conditions: Short trips, cold starts, steep hills, towing and aggressive acceleration can dominate fuel use regardless of whether the transmission has eight or ten speeds.
Performance and shift quality
Drivers usually experience a transmission through launch behavior, low-speed maneuvering, acceleration, passing and cruising rather than through its gear count. A 10-speed has more possible shift points, but that does not dictate whether shifts feel smooth.
Launch and city traffic
In stop-and-go traffic, evaluate how the vehicle engages Drive, eases off the brake, responds to light throttle and transitions between the lowest ratios. A close-ratio design can keep engine-speed changes small. Conversely, a calibration that changes ratios frequently or hesitates before selecting a gear can feel busy even when the hardware is capable of smooth operation.
Passing and merging
For a passing maneuver, the important factors are the engine’s available torque, the selected ratio, downshift timing and throttle response. A 10-speed can choose from more intermediate ratios, potentially avoiding an unnecessarily large jump. An 8-speed can produce the same result if its ratios and control software provide an appropriate step. Compare actual acceleration and response in the vehicle you plan to buy rather than assuming the higher count is quicker.

Highway cruising
At a steady speed, listen for a stable engine note and check whether the transmission holds a ratio without repeated upshifts and downshifts. A tall top ratio can reduce engine speed, but road grade, wind, tire choice and final-drive gearing determine whether it remains engaged. Test on level pavement and on a mild incline if possible.
A manufacturer-specific example
Toyota’s 2016 description of its Direct Shift-10AT says: "In the case of the Direct Shift-10AT, even though the number of gears has been increased to 10 (compared to eight gears in the case of the Direct Shift-8AT), the use of close-ratio gears optimizes the range of use of each gear, particularly in the low-to-mid speed range." This is Toyota’s explanation of its own designs. It supports a claim about that transmission’s engineering goal, not a conclusion that every 10-speed shifts better than every 8-speed.
Reliability and maintenance
Gear count is not a reliability rating. The material available here does not provide comparative failure rates for 8-speed and 10-speed automatics. Reliability decisions therefore have to be made at the vehicle-and-transmission level.
What to investigate for a used vehicle
- Exact transmission identification, not just the number of forward gears.
- Service records showing fluid inspections or changes performed according to the manufacturer’s schedule.
- Documented symptoms such as delayed engagement, slipping, harsh shifts, shuddering, flare between gears or warning lights.
- Open and completed recalls, technical service information and software updates for the specific model year.
- Whether the vehicle has towed, carried heavy loads, operated in severe heat or spent most of its life in stop-and-go traffic.
A transmission can be mechanically sound yet feel different after a software update, adaptive-relearn procedure or fluid service. Have a qualified technician scan for diagnostic codes and inspect the vehicle before purchase; do not infer condition from the presence of eight or ten ratios.

Maintenance questions for a new vehicle
Read the owner’s manual for the exact fluid specification, inspection interval, towing provisions and severe-service schedule. Some vehicles specify no routine fluid replacement under normal conditions, while others prescribe a service interval. These requirements are vehicle-specific, so a generic “10-speed service schedule” is not reliable guidance.
Everyday-driving comparison by situation
| Situation | What an 8-speed may offer | What a 10-speed may offer | What to check in the actual vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urban stop-and-go | Fewer shift events can make the pattern easy to anticipate when calibration is good. | Closer steps may reduce the size of each ratio change, but frequent shifts can be noticeable. | Brake-release creep, low-speed smoothness and response to light throttle. |
| Suburban mixed driving | A broad ratio spread can cover launches, hills and moderate-speed cruising without excessive shifting. | More intermediate choices may keep the engine near a preferred range as speed and load change. | Whether it hunts between ratios on gentle grades or while coasting. |
| Highway cruising | A tall top gear can keep engine speed low and provide stable cruising. | More ratio choices can allow a tall cruise gear plus closer lower gears for hills and passing. | Engine speed, noise, downshift frequency and official highway rating. |
| Frequent hills | A predictable downshift strategy may feel more natural than constant ratio changes. | An intermediate ratio may avoid a large jump, if the software selects it promptly. | Grade response, engine braking and whether the transmission repeatedly changes gear. |
| Towing or heavy loads | Suitability depends on the vehicle’s rated capacity, cooling system and calibration. | Additional ratios do not increase a vehicle’s tow rating by themselves. | Published tow rating, payload, cooling provisions and the manual’s towing procedure. |
How to compare two vehicles correctly
Use this process when two otherwise similar vehicles differ in transmission count.
- Match the fundamentals. Compare vehicles with similar size, curb weight, drivetrain, tire category, engine output and intended use. A lighter front-wheel-drive model and a heavier all-wheel-drive model are not a clean transmission comparison.
- Confirm the exact configuration. Record model year, engine, drive system, axle ratio if published and transmission designation. A model can change calibrations or transmissions during a production run.
- Check official fuel-economy figures. Use the rating for the exact engine and drivetrain, including city, highway and combined values. Treat the number as a complete-vehicle result, not as proof that the speed count caused the difference.
- Drive the route you actually use. Include a cold start, low-speed traffic, a steady cruise, a moderate hill and a controlled passing maneuver. Observe engagement, shift timing, noise and downshift behavior.
- Test multiple drive modes only if you would use them. Eco, Normal, Sport and manual selections can alter shift timing. Note which mode produced the behavior you prefer and whether it changes fuel-economy expectations.
- Check ownership evidence. For a used vehicle, review maintenance records, diagnostic scans, recall completion and any documented transmission repairs. For a new vehicle, read the warranty and maintenance requirements for the exact powertrain.
- Price the whole decision. Include insurance, fuel based on your annual mileage, scheduled service, tires and the cost of the vehicle itself. A small theoretical efficiency advantage may not offset a higher purchase price or a less suitable vehicle.
When an 8-speed is the sensible choice
- The vehicle has the better official combined fuel-economy rating for your required engine and drivetrain.
- Its low-speed shifts and highway behavior feel more predictable during your test drive.
- The model has stronger documented service history or clearer recall resolution.
- You prefer fewer shift events and the transmission maintains the ratio you want without hunting.
- The 8-speed vehicle better matches your size, payload, towing and driving needs.
Choosing eight ratios is not settling for an outdated design. EPA’s 2025 market data show that 8-speed transmissions equipped 33% of new vehicles for model year 2024, making them a mainstream configuration.
When a 10-speed may be the better fit
- The specific vehicle delivers the official fuel economy, response and comfort you want.
- You spend substantial time at varying speeds and value close ratio steps during acceleration or grades.
- The engine and transmission are documented as a well-matched pairing, with a calibration that shifts promptly and smoothly in your test drive.
- The vehicle’s towing, payload and cooling specifications meet your needs independently of the extra ratios.
Do not select a 10-speed solely because the number is larger. NHTSA’s analysis identifies possible tradeoffs from additional speeds, including weight, friction and consumer-perceived shift effects.

Common claims that need qualification
“Ten speeds always use less fuel.”
Not established. More ratios can give the engine more opportunities to operate efficiently, but friction, mass, calibration and driving conditions also matter. No matched everyday-driving 8-speed-versus-10-speed result is provided here.
“Eight speeds are always smoother.”
Not established either. Fewer ratios can mean fewer possible shift events, while closer ratios can reduce the size of individual changes. Smoothness is a property of the complete vehicle and its control strategy.
“A 10-speed is automatically faster.”
Acceleration depends on engine torque, vehicle mass, traction, gearing, shift timing and software. The extra ratios may help the transmission choose a suitable gear, but they do not guarantee quicker performance.
“More gears mean lower reliability.”
There is no comparative failure-rate evidence here that supports that conclusion. Evaluate the named transmission family, model year, warranty and service record instead.
“The top gear tells you the highway engine speed.”
Top-gear ratio is only one part of the calculation. Final-drive ratio, tire diameter, converter lockup strategy, road speed and load determine the engine speed you experience.
A practical buying checklist
- Have you compared the exact model year, engine and drivetrain?
- Did you record official city, highway and combined fuel-economy ratings?
- Did you drive in traffic, at a steady cruise, on a grade and during a passing maneuver?
- Did you listen for hunting, flare, shudder, harsh engagement or delayed response?
- For a used vehicle, did you verify service records, diagnostic codes and recall completion?
- Did you confirm tow rating, payload, cooling provisions and the required fluid or service schedule?
- Are you comparing vehicles with similar size and purpose so the transmission count is not hiding a larger difference?
The final choice should follow the evidence for the particular vehicles in front of you. An 8-speed or 10-speed label is a starting specification, not a verdict on economy, performance or durability.
