6 Cars With the Best AWD Systems (and 2 With the Worst)

A practical comparison of six standout AWD vehicles and two criticized examples, with model-year caveats and guidance for snow, trails, performance and efficiency.

There is no universal “best” all-wheel-drive system. The right choice depends on whether you need dependable grip on wet roads, extra control in deep snow, trail capability, corner-exit traction, efficiency, or simply a reassuring drivetrain in bad weather. The original list’s six favorable examples are the 2025 Subaru Forester, 2023 Audi A5, 2025 Honda CR-V, 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray, 2023 Rivian R1S, and 2025 Toyota Camry. Its two unfavorable examples—the 2024 Volkswagen Taos and 2024 Tesla Cybertruck—reflect broader drivetrain and vehicle complaints, not a standardized test proving their AWD hardware is universally worst.

How to interpret this list

These selections synthesize professional reviews and owner feedback about traction, handling in poor conditions, and related vehicle systems. They are not a head-to-head laboratory ranking: the vehicles range from compact crossovers and sedans to a sports car, a large electric SUV, a hybrid and a pickup. A system tuned for dry-road acceleration cannot be judged by exactly the same standard as one designed for snow or trails.

AWD can help a vehicle accelerate on a slippery surface by distributing torque to more than one axle. It does not shorten braking distances by itself, overcome worn tires, or guarantee clearance in deep snow. Tires, ground clearance, stability control, weight, steering and braking all matter.

The six AWD systems that stand out

2025 Subaru Forester: the all-weather family choice

The 2025 Forester makes AWD standard and is praised for consistent grip in wet and icy conditions. Reviews and owner-survey context support its reputation as a sensible all-weather family vehicle. That is a practical-use verdict, not a measured win in a common traction test.

  • Age and Weight Capacity: This children's car has a maximum weight capacity of 55Lbs, suitable for children from 3 to 5 years old, with excellent reliability of use

2023 Audi A5: standard Quattro across the listed body styles

The 2023 Audi A5 is included because AWD was standard across the body styles cited in the list, while road-test and driving-experience scores were favorable. It is the article’s example of a road-oriented luxury car that combines AWD with composed handling. Because this is a 2023 example, treat it as the source article’s model-year selection rather than an automatic recommendation for every newer A5.

2025 Honda CR-V: useful AWD, but verify the trim

The 2025 CR-V offers AWD on selected gas and hybrid trims and includes hill-descent control in the cited configuration. The system suits drivers who encounter rain, snow and steep driveways without needing a dedicated off-road vehicle. AWD is not universal across the lineup, and the source notes a fuel-economy trade-off for the 2025 hybrid AWD version, so check the exact trim and window sticker.

2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray: AWD for acceleration and corner exit

The E-Ray is an unusual AWD example. Its hybrid system drives the front axle electrically, supplementing the Corvette’s rear-driven powertrain. The benefit highlighted by the list is performance: stronger launches and additional grip when exiting corners. This is not evidence that the E-Ray is the best winter vehicle; its low-slung sports-car design serves a different purpose.

2023 Rivian R1S: selectable electric traction for varied terrain

The 2023 R1S provides standard AWD with dual- or quad-motor configurations and selectable terrain modes. Independent electric motors can give the vehicle detailed torque control across different surfaces, while the SUV’s size and clearance support more than ordinary paved-road use. Greater capability can come with an efficiency or driving-range trade-off, depending on configuration and conditions.

2025 Toyota Camry: a fuel-efficient AWD sedan

The 2025 Camry offers AWD across the trims identified by the source. Its hybrid AWD design adds a rear electric motor, allowing a sedan buyer to obtain extra slippery-surface traction without a mechanical driveshaft running to the rear axle. It is a strong fit for someone who wants an efficient commuter with available AWD rather than an off-road machine. Verify availability and equipment on the specific car.

The two AWD choices that draw the most criticism

2024 Volkswagen Taos: the transmission undermines the AWD experience

The criticism of the 2024 AWD Taos centers on its dual-clutch transmission, which reviewers describe as clunky, with sluggish shifts and lurching starts. That is a whole-drivetrain complaint: the available AWD coupling itself was not established by a controlled test as the segment’s least capable. The source says the 2025 refresh moved to an eight-speed conventional automatic and improved the driving experience, so model year is especially important when comparing Taos examples.

2024 Tesla Cybertruck: mixed vehicle-level concerns

The Cybertruck discussion combines reports of vehicles getting stuck with recalls involving components such as tires and electrical systems, plus concerns about steer-by-wire feel and outward visibility. Those issues can affect confidence and usability, but they do not isolate one repeatable AWD-traction defect. Consider this a broad caution about the 2024 vehicle and its supporting systems, not a definitive engineering ranking of electric AWD.

What recent testing says about Subaru, Honda and Toyota

In a January 14, 2026 MotorTrend comparison of the 2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport, Subaru Forester Wilderness and Toyota RAV4 Woodland, the winner depended on priorities rather than a single AWD champion.

Vehicle tested Relevant AWD or terrain behavior What the test does—and does not—show
2026 Subaru Forester Wilderness 9.3 inches of ground clearance, more capable all-terrain tires, a full-size spare and additional snow/mud X-Mode settings. Deep Snow/Mud mode permits more wheelspin to clear snow or mud from the tread; changing X-Modes requires stopping. Most purpose-built for difficult snowy dirt-road conditions in this comparison. It was least favored on a dry, twisty road.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland Electric rear motor. In most modes the rear axle waits for front slip; Trail mode sends power rearward proactively under acceleration. Shows how software changes the behavior of an on-demand electric AWD system; it is not proof that all Toyota systems behave this way.
2026 Honda CR-V TrailSport Snow mode mainly changes throttle response and may alter stability-control and ABS behavior. The terrain package is comparatively modest. More conservative calibration than the Subaru in that test, not a finding that the CR-V lacks useful everyday traction.

MotorTrend measured the tested Forester Wilderness at 9.4 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and 118 feet to stop from 60 mph. Those are acceleration and braking results for that vehicle, not AWD-traction scores. Persistent snow prevented lateral-g and figure-eight measurements. Testing director Eric Tingwall said, “There’s little question in my mind that if I was doing something sketchy in a place with nobody to pull me out, this is the vehicle I would want to be in.” That is his preference among the three tested crossovers, not a universal technical verdict.

Choose AWD by use case, not by badge

For ordinary rain, ice and snow

Prioritize predictable engagement, good stability control, winter-capable tires and easy-to-use drive modes. The Forester and appropriately equipped CR-V fit this role; the Camry adds a sedan alternative.

For deep snow, gravel and trails

Look for ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a spare tire, terrain modes and a system that can keep delivering torque when a wheel slips. The Forester Wilderness example shows why hardware and calibration matter as much as the AWD label.

For performance driving

The Corvette E-Ray demonstrates that AWD can be designed primarily to improve launches and corner exits. Its strengths should not be confused with winter practicality.

For efficiency and range

Hybrid and electric AWD layouts can reduce mechanical complexity or add precise axle control, but extra motors and hardware may affect fuel economy or EV range. Compare the exact powertrain, not just the model name.

AWD still needs the right tires

Winter tires paired with a suitable vehicle improve cold-weather grip and driving confidence. AWD helps transmit power, while tires determine much of the available contact with the road; braking and steering remain limited by that contact. Confirm the correct size and compatibility for your vehicle before buying.

What to verify before buying

  1. Check the exact model year: the Taos transmission changed for 2025, and drivetrain details can change during a redesign.
  2. Confirm whether AWD is standard or optional on the precise trim, especially for the CR-V and Camry.
  3. Read the window sticker and manufacturer specifications for tires, ground clearance, spare-tire equipment and terrain modes.
  4. Match the system to your surfaces: paved winter roads, steep driveways, deep snow and trails demand different capabilities.
  5. Balance traction against operating costs, including hybrid fuel-economy differences and EV range.

Why there is no universal worst AWD system

The Taos and Cybertruck examples show why “worst” requires context. A transmission that behaves poorly at low speed can make an AWD vehicle frustrating even when traction is adequate. Reports of getting stuck, recalls, steering feel or poor visibility can make another vehicle undesirable without proving its AWD hardware is uniquely ineffective. No reviewed source supplies one standardized quantitative test across all eight vehicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Subaru AWD better than Honda AWD?

Not in every situation. Subaru’s Forester Wilderness offers more clearance, terrain equipment and aggressive snow/mud calibration, while a CR-V may be the better fit for a driver who wants a quieter, more conservative crossover for ordinary roads. Compare the exact trims, tires and surfaces.

Does AWD make a car safe on ice?

AWD can improve acceleration on slippery surfaces, but it does not eliminate the need for winter tires or shorten braking distances by itself. Speed, tires, stability control and road conditions remain decisive.

Which of these vehicles is best for fuel economy?

The list identifies the 2025 Toyota Camry and available 2025 Honda CR-V hybrid AWD as efficiency-focused choices, but the exact fuel-economy result depends on trim and configuration. The Rivian’s AWD capability can trade against driving range.

The Bottom Line

The best AWD system is the one matched to your surface and priorities: Forester for all-weather and rough-road confidence, A5 for road-focused luxury, CR-V or Camry for practical efficiency, E-Ray for performance, and R1S for selectable electric capability. Treat the Taos and Cybertruck criticisms as model-specific warnings—not proof that one AWD design is universally the worst.
