5.7 HEMI Cylinder Numbers & Firing Order: Everything You Need to Know

The 5.7 HEMI fires 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Cylinders 1-3-5-7 are on the left bank and 2-4-6-8 on the right, numbered front to rear. Verify your exact vehicle before repairs or parts replacement.

For the documented 5.7L HEMI application, the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Cylinders are numbered from the front of the engine toward the rear: 1-3-5-7 on the left bank and 2-4-6-8 on the right bank. The reference is for a 2008 Dodge Charger, so verify the exact year, model and engine in the applicable service information before repairing your vehicle.

5.7 HEMI cylinder-number layout

Viewed from the vehicle, cylinder numbers run front to rear in each bank. In a North American vehicle, “left” and “right” mean the vehicle’s driver and passenger sides, not the sides as you face the engine from the bumper. Confirm the orientation for your specific vehicle before disconnecting coils or spark-plug wires.

The 2008 Dodge Charger V8-5.7L service reference states that cylinders are numbered front to rear, with 1, 3, 5 and 7 on the left bank and 2, 4, 6 and 8 on the right bank. Read the service-reference page.

5.7 HEMI firing order

The crankshaft fires the cylinders in this sequence:

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Mopar’s 5.7L Stage 3 crate-engine instruction sheet independently lists the same order and includes a harness-layout diagram. That document describes a crate-engine installation; do not assume its connector routing or repair instructions match every production vehicle. View the Mopar instruction sheet.

Numbering and firing order are different

  • Cylinder numbering tells you where a cylinder is physically located.
  • Firing order tells you the sequence in which the ignition and combustion events occur.

For example, cylinder 6 is on the right bank, third position from the front. In the firing sequence, it is the fifth cylinder to fire. Use the layout to find a component and the firing-order list to interpret the engine’s sequence; one cannot replace the other.

How to use the information when diagnosing a misfire

  1. Read the diagnostic trouble code with a suitable scan tool and note the reported cylinder.
  2. Use the bank table to locate that numbered cylinder from the front of the engine.
  3. Inspect the cylinder’s coil, electrical connector, wiring, spark plug and injector, following the vehicle-specific service procedure.
  4. If you remove ignition components, label connectors and reinstall them on the same numbered cylinders. Do not rearrange them according to the firing-order list.
  5. Clear codes only after recording them, then follow the service manual’s confirmation and repair steps.

The cylinder and firing-order references identify locations and sequence; they do not constitute a complete cross-year misfire diagnostic procedure. Engine controls, access, connector layouts and test specifications can vary by vehicle.

Check the exact vehicle application before replacing parts

The cited firing-order page is specifically for a 2008 Dodge Charger V8-5.7L. The same basic HEMI sequence is also printed in Mopar crate-engine documentation, but the available references do not provide a year-by-year matrix for every Dodge, Ram, Jeep or Chrysler 5.7L application. Use the service information for your exact year, model, engine variant and market before performing repairs.

Spark-plug fitment and gap

Mopar lists replacement spark plug SP143877AB for 5.7L HEMI applications in its eStore. See the Mopar listing. That listing should be treated as an application reference, not proof that the part fits every 5.7L vehicle.

As a separate, year-specific example, the 2010 Ram owner’s guide specifies plug LZFR5C-11 with a 0.043-inch (1.09 mm) gap for the guide’s 5.7L application. Consult the 2010 Ram guide. Confirm the current catalog fitment and the owner’s or service manual specification for your vehicle before installing plugs. A plug number or gap from one model year should not be presented as a universal 5.7L HEMI specification.
