The Neue Klasse BMW 3 Series is a new model range, not just an electric car: it pairs the fully electric i3 with combustion-engine 3 Series models, with a plug-in hybrid announced for a later date. BMW lists two electric versions at launch, the i3 50 xDrive and i3 40 xDrive. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, and range is stated on the WLTP cycle.
What is the Neue Klasse BMW 3 Series?
It is BMW’s next-generation 3 Series range built around the Neue Klasse vehicle and technology program. The i3 is the range’s fully electric sedan; petrol models are also part of the lineup. BMW says the models share the Neue Klasse design, interior and digital operating system, while their chassis tuning is adapted to their different powertrains. BMW previously identified the iX3 as the first series-production Neue Klasse vehicle and the i3 as the second model due in 2026, but its September 2026 3 Series announcement gives the current lineup and timing.
BMW describes the range as proof that “Sheer Driving Pleasure is not tied to a single type of drive system.” That is the company’s own characterization, not an independent assessment.
How do the electric i3 versions compare?
BMW’s September 2026 specifications list two all-wheel-drive electric versions. The range figures are maximum WLTP values published by BMW, not independent real-world results.

What powertrains are in the wider range?
Fully electric i3
The i3 is the first fully electric 3 Series. BMW says its Gen6 eDrive combines cylindrical-cell high-voltage batteries, electric motors and 800-volt technology. The electric models are built at Plant Munich.

Petrol models and mild-hybrid technology
Petrol-powered 3 Series models are part of the Neue Klasse range, including the six-cylinder M350 xDrive, which BMW calls the combustion flagship. BMW says these engines use 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Combustion models are built at Plant Dingolfing.
Plug-in hybrid planned
BMW has announced that a plug-in hybrid will join the range “over the coming year.” This is a stated plan, not confirmation that the model is already available; BMW’s cited announcement does not provide its specifications or a market-specific launch date.

What are the i3’s charging and energy features?
BMW lists peak DC charging of up to 400 kW for the i3 50 xDrive and up to 300 kW for the i3 40 xDrive. Its claimed ten-minute range additions are conditional on using a suitable fast charger. The available material does not establish a recommended home charger, regional installation requirements or compatibility with a particular third-party accessory.
The i3 supports Vehicle-to-Load, Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid functions, according to BMW’s March 2026 reveal. That release says Vehicle-to-Load requires the optional AC Charging Professional equipment. Buyers should confirm the exact feature and equipment availability for their market and vehicle configuration.

What is inside the new 3 Series?
The cabin centers on BMW Panoramic iDrive, which BMW describes as a combination of Panoramic Vision, a central display, a multifunction steering wheel and an optional 3D Head-Up Display. The central display measures 17.9 inches. BMW says the system runs BMW Operating System X, based on the Android Open Source Project.
BMW also describes the Heart of Joy as a high-performance computer coordinating drive and dynamics functions, and says it responds ten times faster than previous systems. That comparison is BMW’s claim, not an independent benchmark. Equipment and optional-feature availability can vary by market and trim.

Does the Motorway Assistant allow hands-free driving?
BMW describes the driver-assistance package as SAE Level 2 and says Motorway Assistant can enable hands-free motorway driving at speeds up to 130 km/h in 21 countries. This is driver assistance, not autonomous driving: the driver remains responsible for the vehicle and must follow the system’s operating requirements. Availability and conditions are geographic and market-specific, so check local BMW information before relying on the feature.
When will the new BMW 3 Series be available?
BMW’s global announcement says orders opened on 30 September 2026, with first deliveries expected around the turn of 2026/2027. BMW USA states that the i3 Sedan will be available in the United States in 2027, with deliveries starting in early 2027. These are different market timelines; the global order announcement does not mean U.S. deliveries have begun.
BMW’s March 2026 reveal had forecast i3 production starting in August 2026 and initial deliveries from autumn 2026. The later September announcement provides the newer order and delivery expectations.
