BMW’s 2027 M3 CS Handschalter is a North America-only limited edition that combines the CS lightweight and chassis treatment with a six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. What the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter is
BMW announced the car on May 18, 2026, describing it as a limited-edition model marking the close of the sixth-generation M3. “The 2027 BMW M3 CS Handschalter pairs the lightweight construction and track-ready chassis tuning of BMW CS models with the added engagement of a 6-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive,” BMW Group press release author Jay Hanson said.

“Handschalter” means manual transmission. Unlike the M3 Competition and M3 Competition xDrive, which use an eight-speed automatic, this CS sends its output through a six-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. BMW says the model is built exclusively for North America; it is not a global M3 variant with unrestricted availability.

Where the weight saving comes from
BMW says its targeted lightweight measures reduce nearly 75 pounds versus a standard M3 when the optional M Carbon Ceramic brakes are fitted. That headline requires two qualifications: BMW’s detailed breakdown identifies about 42 pounds saved against the base manual M3, while the carbon-ceramic brakes account for another 31.5 pounds compared with standard M Compound brakes. The result is therefore dependent on both the comparison car and the brake configuration.
The CS package also brings track-oriented chassis tuning and the equipment changes associated with BMW’s CS models. BMW has not published a complete production specification or a unit count for this edition, so “very limited numbers” should not be read as a disclosed allocation figure.

Price, allocations and the “prices are climbing” claim

BMW lists a $107,100 base MSRP for the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter. Destination and handling add $1,350, putting the published pre-tax starting total at $108,450. Registration, taxes, factory options and dealer-installed charges are additional. MSRP is manufacturer pricing; it is not a guarantee of the final transaction price.
What is actually known about markups
One Reddit user reported being offered an allocation with a $20,000 additional dealer markup and said five people were on that dealer’s wait list. That is a single buyer anecdote, not a verified completed sale, a dealer-wide policy or a market index. It is reasonable to say that at least one reported offer exceeded MSRP; it is not evidence that M3 CS prices are broadly or already appreciating.

BMW announced that production was expected to begin in July 2026, with deliveries expected in fall 2026. Those were announced expectations, not verified delivery results. BMW did not disclose how many cars would be built, making it impossible to calculate supply from the announcement alone.

The standard manual M3 is the closest drivetrain match. The Competition versions deliver more power, but their automatic transmissions and, in the xDrive model, all-wheel drive change the car’s character. The CS premium pays for special-edition weight measures, chassis equipment and limited availability rather than a higher horsepower rating.
Tires, brakes and track use
BMW lists 275/35ZR19 tires at the front and 285/30ZR20 tires at the rear. Ultra-track tires are an optional $600 choice according to BMW’s release. Those dimensions are a starting point, not a universal tire-shopping specification: wheel design, load rating, speed rating, seasonal use and brake clearance must be confirmed for the individual vehicle with BMW or a qualified tire retailer.

The car’s CS chassis and optional carbon-ceramic brakes are aimed at drivers who will use the additional thermal capacity and track hardware. For ordinary road driving, replacement cost, cold-weather behavior and maintenance requirements may matter more than the maximum circuit advantage. BMW also promotes M Track Days through its M3 materials, which is a relevant way for owners to learn the car’s capabilities in a controlled setting.
What buyers should verify before paying a premium
- Confirm the vehicle and allocation. Ask the dealer for the exact model designation, production status and written allocation documentation.
- Separate MSRP from the worksheet. Request the $107,100 base price, the $1,350 destination charge and every option, fee and dealer adjustment as separate line items.
- Check the brake and tire specification. The claimed nearly 75-pound saving assumes carbon-ceramic brakes; verify whether the car has them and which tire package is included.
- Get the market claim in perspective. A reported $20,000 markup is an anecdote, not proof that every dealer or completed sale supports that premium.
- Plan for use. Confirm insurance, replacement-tire availability, brake servicing and whether the manual rear-drive layout fits your road and track priorities.
Why the model matters
The M3 CS Handschalter is significant because it preserves the manual, rear-wheel-drive formula while adding BMW’s most aggressive factory M3 treatment. BMW M North America product manager Scott Stirling was reported by BMWBLOG as saying the 2027 model year is the G80’s last; that is secondary reporting, separate from BMW’s official announcement. If that timing holds, the Handschalter serves as a deliberately focused sendoff rather than a new mainstream trim.
