2026 Mazda CX-5: Is the Redesign Worth the Wait?

The redesigned 2026 Mazda CX-5 fixes space, cargo, safety, and tech—but keeps a modest 187-hp engine and 26-mpg combined rating. Here’s who should buy, wait, or look elsewhere.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is worth waiting for if your priorities are space, safety, standard all-wheel drive, and a more modern cabin. It is not worth waiting for if you expect faster acceleration or better fuel economy. The redesign is 4.5 inches longer, improves rear-seat and cargo usability, and earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. But its launch engine makes the same 187 horsepower as before, the turbo option disappears, and the EPA rating is only 26 mpg combined. Mazda’s announced 2027 hybrid is the more interesting wait for efficiency-minded buyers.

Yes—but only for the right reason. The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is worth waiting for if you want a roomier rear seat, a more useful cargo area, standard all-wheel drive, stronger standard safety equipment, and a substantially newer cabin. It is not the CX-5 to wait for if you are expecting more power or a major fuel-economy improvement.

Mazda’s third-generation redesign fixes several practical weaknesses of the outgoing SUV, but the launch powertrain remains a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower, a six-speed automatic, and an EPA-rated 26 mpg combined. The previous generation’s available turbocharged engine does not return for 2026. Mazda has announced a hybrid CX-5 for 2027, but its price, output, EPA rating, and detailed U.S. specifications are not yet established.

The short version: Buy or wait for the 2026 CX-5 for space, safety, standard AWD, and cabin technology. Wait for the 2027 model if fuel economy is the deciding factor. Look elsewhere—or compare remaining turbocharged outgoing CX-5 inventory—if brisk acceleration is non-negotiable.

What the 2026 Mazda CX-5 changes in practical terms

The new CX-5 does not abandon Mazda’s familiar compact-SUV formula. It keeps the recognizable profile, standard i-Activ AWD, and an emphasis on composed handling. The important changes are underneath the familiar shape and inside the doors.

  • The body is 4.5 inches longer.
  • The wheelbase grows to 110.8 inches.
  • The vehicle is more than half an inch wider than its predecessor.
  • Larger door openings improve access.
  • The cargo area is nearly two inches longer and more than an inch taller.
  • The lift-in height is lower, making heavy or bulky items easier to load.

Those numbers matter more than the modest exterior evolution. Mazda says the longer body improves rear legroom, knee room, and headroom. That should be especially relevant to families using rear-facing child seats, adults who regularly sit in the second row, and owners who use the CX-5 for road trips rather than simply commuting.

The exterior redesign is recognizable rather than radical. The front end looks wider, the daytime running lights use a two-tier arrangement, the Signature Wing grille is revised, and broad MAZDA lettering replaces the more familiar rear treatment. Buyers who like the outgoing CX-5’s restrained shape may see this as an advantage. Those hoping for a dramatic visual reset may find it conservative.

The powertrain is the biggest reason to hesitate

Every U.S.-market 2026 CX-5 at launch uses the same basic mechanical package:

Component 2026 CX-5 specification
Engine Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder
Output 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque
Transmission Six-speed automatic
Drive system Standard i-Activ all-wheel drive
Fuel Regular unleaded
Fuel-saving technology Cylinder deactivation
EPA fuel economy 24 city, 30 highway, 26 combined mpg

Standard AWD is a meaningful benefit for buyers in snow, heavy rain, or on unpaved roads. Selectable Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes also make the CX-5 more adaptable than a front-drive-only crossover. But AWD does not turn this engine into a strong performer. The 2.5-liter is a refinement of the familiar formula, not a transformation.

Car and Driver recorded 8.0 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in a Premium Plus test vehicle. That is adequate for normal traffic, but it is not quick by current compact-SUV standards. The same test produced 173 feet of braking from 70 mph and 0.83 g on the skidpad. These are useful instrumented results for that specific test vehicle—not guarantees for every trim, tire, road surface, load, or weather condition.

The more important point is how the missing turbo changes the buying decision. The outgoing CX-5 could be ordered with a turbocharged 2.5-liter that gave buyers a stronger answer for highway merging, passing, steep grades, and full-load driving. That option is absent from the 2026 launch lineup. If you regularly carry four adults, live in a mountainous area, tow, or simply enjoy having extra acceleration available, schedule a proper test drive rather than assuming the new CX-5 will feel like an upgrade in every respect.

What the 26-mpg rating means

An EPA rating of 26 mpg combined is ordinary rather than impressive for a modern compact SUV. The 24-mpg city and 30-mpg highway figures are the relevant numbers for buyers whose driving is heavily urban or highway-based. Real-world results will vary with temperature, speed, traffic, tires, cargo, and driving style.

The 2026 CX-5 therefore creates an unusual split: it is new where buyers can feel and use it every day, but not especially new where fuel economy and acceleration are concerned. The standard AWD system may be a priority for some shoppers, but anyone comparing only fuel consumption should include efficient hybrid alternatives before signing a deal.

Should you wait for the 2027 CX-5 hybrid?

Mazda has announced a hybrid CX-5 for 2027 using a Skyactiv-Z engine and Mazda Hybrid System technology. That makes the 2026 gas model a transitional product. It is the first year of the new body and cabin, but it is not the version Mazda is positioning as the fuel-economy-focused follow-up.

Do not treat the 2027 hybrid announcement as a complete specification sheet. Mazda has not established the final U.S. price, horsepower, EPA rating, detailed equipment, or availability in the information covered here. The announcement also should not be turned into a promise that the hybrid will be quicker, cheaper to own, or available at a particular time.

Wait for the 2027 hybrid when:

  • Fuel economy matters more than getting the redesigned CX-5 immediately.
  • You can keep your current vehicle for an uncertain additional period.
  • You are willing to wait for final pricing and EPA numbers before deciding.

Choose the 2026 gas model when:

  • You need a vehicle now or within the 2026 model year.
  • Standard AWD and improved passenger space are more important than maximum mpg.
  • You prefer the first year of the new cabin and safety package and accept the conventional engine.

How the new CX-5 drives

Mazda’s goal was to preserve the CX-5’s responsive character while making it calmer and more comfortable. The redesign includes revised shock absorbers, a new wheel-and-tire setup, updated G-Vectoring Control Plus, and an electronic brake limited-slip differential.

Independent first-drive coverage generally describes the result as controlled, composed, and still engaging. That is the right way to frame it. The 2026 CX-5 should appeal to drivers who want a compact SUV that feels settled through corners and predictable on the highway, but its handling does not erase the limitations of the naturally aspirated engine.

There is also a distinction between a first drive and a complete evaluation. Early impressions can describe ride, steering, seating, and software, but they cannot establish long-term reliability or ownership costs. The published 8.0-second test result is a more objective reference for acceleration, but it still comes from one Premium Plus vehicle. A test drive with the people and cargo you normally carry is the best way to decide whether the power is acceptable.

Cabin technology: a major upgrade with a control-system compromise

The largest interior change is the new integrated touchscreen system. Depending on trim, the center display measures 12.9 or 15.6 inches. The system includes Google built-in, Google Maps, Google Assistant, Google Play, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto capability. Mazda says the system can be operated by touch, voice, and steering-wheel controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a substantial modernization over the outgoing CX-5, particularly for navigation and connected services. The larger display should also make maps and menus easier to see. However, Mazda has traded some of the old system’s physical-control simplicity for the new screen-centered interface.

The familiar volume knob is gone, a change MotorTrend specifically criticized. Some traditional controls remain, but the overall interaction is more dependent on the touchscreen than before. Consumer Reports also identified controls and usability as areas to watch, even while listing the touchscreen and traditional controls among the vehicle’s positives. Whether that trade-off bothers you will depend on how often you adjust audio, climate, navigation, and driver-assistance settings while moving.

Google Gemini functionality is described as coming to vehicles with Google built-in. It should not be presented as a fully completed or universally active feature in every CX-5 at every point of production. Buyers should verify the vehicle’s software status, connected-service requirements, and included features before assuming a particular Google function is available.

Other cabin changes include a 10.25-inch digital gauge display, a larger active driving display, and seven-color ambient lighting on applicable equipment. The Premium Plus trim delivers the most upscale presentation, while the lower trims may be more compelling because Mazda standardizes more safety and convenience equipment than before.

2026 Mazda CX-5 pricing and the trim worth considering

Mazda’s January 13, 2026 U.S. announcement listed the following starting MSRPs before destination and handling:

Trim Starting MSRP before destination Approximate price after $1,595 destination
2.5 S $29,990 $31,585
2.5 S Select $31,990 $33,585
2.5 S Preferred $34,250 $35,845
2.5 S Premium $36,900 $38,495
2.5 S Premium Plus $38,990 $40,585

Mazda later stated that the destination and handling charge would be $1,595 effective August 11, 2026, or $1,640 in Alaska. The calculated figures above exclude taxes, title, registration, dealer fees, options, accessories, and any change in Mazda’s pricing. They are not promises about transaction prices.

Independent road-test pages may show different totals because they often include destination, premium paint, or other charges. Car and Driver listed an approximate range of $31,485 to $40,485 and tested a Premium Plus at $41,080 after a premium-paint charge. Those figures should not be confused with Mazda’s pre-destination MSRP table or with the final price on an individual buyer’s purchase agreement.

Which trim is the value choice?

2.5 S: This is the lowest-cost way into the redesigned body, standard AWD, and the standard safety suite. It makes the most sense for buyers who care about the new platform and passenger space but do not need a luxury-style cabin.

2.5 S Select: This is likely the first trim to examine for value. It adds more appealing upholstery and convenience equipment without moving as far up the price ladder as the premium models. Buyers should compare its exact standard equipment with the window sticker rather than relying only on the trim name.

2.5 S Preferred: The Preferred trim is the likely sweet spot for shoppers who want a more upscale interior without paying Premium Plus money. It deserves close scrutiny if leather-like or leather seating, additional comfort features, and a more polished cabin matter to you.

2.5 S Premium: This trim becomes defensible for buyers who specifically want higher-end cabin equipment, larger displays, or available upscale features. It also moves the CX-5 into a price range where more powerful and more efficient competing SUVs deserve a direct comparison.

2.5 S Premium Plus: Premium Plus is the most fully equipped choice and the trim used for Car and Driver’s instrumented test. It can make sense for a buyer who wants the complete experience, but it is difficult to call it the value leader when the engine remains the same 187-horsepower unit as in the base model.

For most buyers, the Select or Preferred trims are the logical starting points. The base model protects the budget, while Premium and Premium Plus should be chosen for specific equipment—not simply because a higher trim is assumed to solve the CX-5’s power or fuel-economy limitations.

Safety is one of the 2026 CX-5’s strongest arguments

The 2026 CX-5 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. The IIHS results show Good ratings for the small-overlap front, updated moderate-overlap front, and updated side tests. Standard front crash prevention also received Good ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian tests.

Headlight performance varies by trim or equipment, so the award should not be read as evidence that every version performs identically in every safety category. Check the equipment on the specific vehicle you are considering.

Mazda’s 2026 specification information lists standard equipment including front and rear Smart Brake Support, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection in the rear braking system, traffic-sign recognition, and other i-Activsense functions across the lineup. The exact behavior and availability of individual functions can vary by model or equipment. The window sticker and owner’s manual are more reliable than a general trim summary when you need to confirm a particular feature.

Safety technology is not a substitute for visibility, attention, appropriate speed, or a properly installed child seat. Its value is that buyers do not have to climb to the most expensive trim to obtain a broadly equipped driver-assistance package.

Rear-seat and cargo improvements make the redesign more useful

The 2026 CX-5’s larger dimensions are most meaningful in everyday use. Wider doors make it easier to get in and out, and the longer body is intended to improve rear legroom, knee room, and headroom. That should reduce one of the outgoing model’s most visible compromises for families and adult passengers.

Mazda lists 33.7 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row and 57.5 cubic feet with the second row folded. Car and Driver lists approximately 34 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 67 cubic feet with the seats folded. Those folded-seat numbers should not be treated as a contradiction or combined into one definitive comparison: automakers and publications can use different measurement conventions and loading boundaries.

The practical improvements are clearer than the raw figures. The cargo area is longer and taller, the lift-in height is lower, and the rear access is easier. The redesigned CX-5 should be better suited to strollers, grocery runs, sports equipment, pets, and weekend luggage than its predecessor.

Mazda’s accessory catalog lists cargo trays, padded cargo liners, retractable cargo covers, cargo nets, crossbars, and cargo boxes. If your CX-5 will regularly carry wet gear, muddy shoes, pets, or child-related messes, 2026 Mazda CX-5 cargo liner is a sensible accessory to research. Confirm that any listing explicitly fits the 2026 U.S.-spec vehicle; an accessory for the previous generation should not be assumed to fit just because the model name is the same.

The same logic applies to 2026 Mazda CX-5 all-weather floor mats. They make particular sense in regions with snow, mud, sand, or frequent rain, but verify model-year and trim fitment before ordering. Mazda’s official accessory category establishes the use case; it does not guarantee that every third-party listing has the correct dimensions or retention points.

Towing, fuel, and ownership details

Mazda’s specification materials list a 1,500-pound towing capacity. That is enough for appropriately equipped light-duty recreational use, but it is not a reason to view the CX-5 as a serious tow vehicle. Confirm the exact vehicle’s equipment, trailer requirements, tongue weight, and owner’s-manual limits before towing.

The 2026 owner’s manual covers Mazda Connect, Google Assistant, software updates, driver-position registration, i-ACTIVSENSE settings, and maintenance information. It specifies regular unleaded fuel. Maintenance intervals and requirements should be followed for the vehicle’s configuration and the severity of its use; severe service can change what is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Car and Driver reports a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, with no complimentary scheduled maintenance. Confirm the warranty terms, exclusions, roadside assistance, and any regional differences in the purchase documents for the specific U.S. vehicle.

Long-term reliability and resale performance cannot be established from launch reviews. This is a first-year redesign, so the new software and cabin electronics deserve ordinary first-year scrutiny. MotorTrend’s yearlong test had identified a driver-profile recognition issue in its test vehicle, but that is one long-term-test observation—not evidence of a fleet-wide defect. Prospective buyers should check for software updates and have any repeatable issue documented by the dealer.

Buy the 2026 CX-5 or wait?

Your priority Best move Why
More rear-seat room and easier cargo loading Choose the 2026 CX-5 The longer body, larger openings, taller and longer cargo area, and lower lift-in height address real usability complaints.
Standard AWD in a compact SUV Choose the 2026 CX-5 Every U.S. launch model has i-Activ AWD, along with Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes.
Better fuel economy Wait for the 2027 hybrid or compare another hybrid now The 2026 gas model is rated at 26 mpg combined, and the 2027 hybrid’s final figures are not yet known.
Fast acceleration Compare other powertrains or remaining outgoing turbo CX-5s The 2026 uses a 187-hp naturally aspirated engine, and independent testing recorded 8.0 seconds to 60 mph.
Modern infotainment Test-drive the 2026 before buying The Google-based system is more contemporary, but the loss of the familiar volume knob may be frustrating.
Lowest purchase price Start with the 2.5 S or 2.5 S Select The redesigned body and standard safety equipment are available without paying Premium Plus prices.

Final verdict

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is a better family and daily-use vehicle than the outgoing model because it addresses the things owners notice most: rear-seat space, access, cargo usability, safety equipment, and cabin technology. Its standard AWD and composed driving character remain legitimate reasons to choose it.

But the redesign does not deliver a powertrain breakthrough. The naturally aspirated 2.5-liter is adequate, not exciting; the six-speed automatic remains; fuel economy is only 26 mpg combined; and the outgoing turbo option disappears. The new Google-based infotainment system is more current but sacrifices some physical-control convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wait for the 2026 Mazda CX-5 if you want the improved vehicle itself. Wait for the 2027 hybrid if what you really want is better efficiency. If you need a car now and can accept moderate acceleration and mediocre fuel economy, the 2026 CX-5 is a credible, safer, more practical evolution of Mazda’s compact SUV—not a revolutionary one.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2026 Mazda CX-5 is worth the wait for its added space, easier cargo use, standard AWD, safety credentials, and updated cabin. It is not worth waiting for as a performance or fuel-economy upgrade. Buyers focused on efficiency should keep their current vehicle if possible and wait for Mazda to publish the 2027 hybrid’s actual U.S. specifications.
