2026 Ford F-150 Buying Guide: Trims, Engines, and Options Explained

The right 2026 Ford F-150 is the one whose complete configuration matches your work, recreation, passenger, towing and budget requirements—not simply the truck with the biggest engine or highest advertised number. Start with the job, select a trim, choose the powertrain, then confirm cab, bed, axle, tow equipment, payload and options on the exact vehicle. Ford lists eight trims and six engines for the U.S. market, but availability and ratings change with configuration.

Use this buying order before comparing prices

Shopping the F-150 in the wrong order can produce an attractive truck that cannot legally or comfortably carry your trailer, passengers or equipment. Work through these decisions in sequence:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Define the use case. Decide whether the truck is primarily for job-site hauling, family transportation, recreational towing, trail driving, occasional chores or a combination.
  2. Choose the trim. Trim determines the available engines, cab and bed combinations, suspension hardware, comfort equipment and technology.
  3. Select the powertrain. Compare torque, towing and payload ratings, hybrid power capability and off-road intent.
  4. Choose cab and bed. Passenger room, cargo length and some capability ratings depend on this choice.
  5. Calculate towing and payload. Use the exact truck’s door-jamb payload label and Ford’s towing documentation rather than a headline maximum.
  6. Add packages and technology. Tow equipment, axle upgrades, cameras, driver-assistance features and appearance packages can change price and capability.
  7. Verify the final build. Confirm the window sticker, destination charge, dealer fees, option availability and subscription terms before signing.

2026 F-150 trims at a glance

Ford lists eight U.S.-market trims for 2026. The following starting MSRPs are Ford’s advertised base prices and exclude the $2,795 destination and delivery charge, government fees, taxes, dealer fees, finance charges, emissions-testing fees, optional equipment and extra-cost colors. Dealers set their own prices.

  • Precision Fit: Designed specifically for 2015+ Ford F-150, F-250, and F-350 models and backed by Rough Country’s 3-year warranty for added confidence.

XL: the equipment-first starting point

XL is aimed at buyers who value straightforward work utility. Ford lists a 2.7L EcoBoost V6, a 12-inch center display, cloth seating, vinyl flooring and a Class IV trailer hitch. The vinyl floor is easier to clean after dirty jobs, while the standard hitch gives basic trailer hardware without requiring a premium trim. Confirm the exact cab, bed, axle and tow-package combination if the truck will carry heavy payloads or tow frequently.

STX: appearance without moving to a luxury trim

STX adds sport-oriented presentation to the core truck, including 18-inch gloss-black wheels and unique sport cloth seats. The available STX Lobo Package is a street-focused option for buyers who want a more distinctive setup; Ford identifies it with the 5.0L V8 and 22-inch wheels for 2026. Because wheel and tire changes can affect payload, ride and replacement cost, check the final build rather than assuming every STX has the same specifications.

XLT: the flexible mainstream choice

XLT is the trim to examine when you need a broad mix of passenger comfort, towing aids and available technology. Ford lists heated front seats, a 360-degree camera, trailer-assistance features and available PowerBoost hybrid power. It is also the configuration family Ford identifies for its highest available tow rating when specified as a SuperCrew 4×4 with a 6.5-foot box, Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow axle upgrade. That statement describes a particular build, not every XLT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lariat: comfort and technology for daily driving

Lariat moves into a more upscale environment with heated and ventilated ActiveX-trimmed seats and a heated steering wheel. An available head-up display can place selected information in the driver’s view. The extra equipment raises the starting price substantially, and heavier options or larger wheels can reduce the payload available on a particular truck. Compare the payload label on the actual vehicle if work use remains part of the plan.

King Ranch and Platinum: premium treatments

King Ranch and Platinum are premium-oriented trims with distinctive interior and exterior treatments. Ford lists PowerBoost availability on King Ranch and BlueCruise availability on selected trims, but the cited overview does not provide base MSRPs for either trim. Use Ford’s live configurator and window sticker to verify exact equipment, pricing and eligibility for the powertrain and driver-assistance features you want.

Tremor: factory off-road equipment

Tremor is designed around off-road use rather than merely adding cosmetic cues. Ford lists 33-inch all-terrain tires, increased ride height, selectable drive modes and trail features. Those changes can improve ground clearance and traction on appropriate terrain, but they may also affect step-in height, handling, tire replacement cost and the payload or towing rating of the chosen configuration. Treat Tremor’s trail hardware as a different mission from conventional maximum towing.

Raptor: performance off road

Raptor is the high-performance off-road model. Ford lists heavy-duty skid plates, FOX shock technology and an available 5.2L supercharged V8. Its equipment is intended for demanding high-speed or technical off-road driving, not simply for maximizing trailer capacity. Confirm the exact engine, bed and rating information for the truck in front of you, and budget for its specialized tires and suspension components.

2026 engine choices and what the published ratings mean

Ford lists six engines across the 2026 F-150 range. Four have horsepower, torque, maximum available towing and maximum available payload figures in Ford’s 2026 towing guide; the high-output 3.5L EcoBoost and 5.2L supercharged V8 are identified for performance applications, with detailed ratings dependent on their specific configurations.

Engine Published output Maximum available towing Maximum available payload How to interpret it
2.7L EcoBoost V6 325 hp; 400 lb-ft 8,400 lb 1,775 lb Turbocharged entry engine; rating is a maximum available figure, not universal
3.5L EcoBoost V6 382 hp; 500 lb-ft 13,500 lb 2,440 lb Highest published maximum tow and payload figures in the cited guide; exact rating depends on configuration
3.5L PowerBoost full hybrid V6 420 hp; 570 lb-ft 12,400 lb 1,740 lb Combines a gasoline engine and electric motor; Pro Power Onboard is standard with this engine
5.0L Ti-VCT V8 400 hp; 410 lb-ft 12,800 lb 2,235 lb Conventional V8 option with substantial available tow and payload ratings
High-output 3.5L EcoBoost V6 Detailed figure not stated in the cited excerpt Use the detailed Ford guide for the selected configuration Use the detailed Ford guide for the selected configuration Performance application; do not substitute the standard 3.5L EcoBoost figures
5.2L supercharged V8 Detailed figure not stated in the cited excerpt Use the exact Raptor documentation Use the exact Raptor documentation Available in Raptor for high-performance off-road use

“Maximum available” is essential wording. Ford says towing varies with trim, options and payload, and identifies cargo, configuration, accessories and passengers as variables. The rating in the table is therefore a ceiling available on at least one properly equipped configuration, not a promise for every F-150 with that engine.

3.5L EcoBoost V6: the conventional towing benchmark

Ford’s 2026 guide lists a maximum available 13,500-pound tow rating and 2,440-pound maximum available payload for the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. Buyers who regularly tow a substantial conventional trailer should compare this engine with the correct axle and tow equipment, then verify the rating on the specific truck. A dealer or configurator cannot make an under-rated cab, bed or axle combination legal by installing a stronger engine alone.

5.0L Ti-VCT V8: a high-capacity conventional alternative

The 5.0L V8 is listed at 400 horsepower, 410 lb-ft of torque, a maximum available 12,800-pound tow rating and a maximum available 2,235-pound payload. It can be a logical comparison for buyers who prefer a conventional V8 or want the STX Lobo Package, but the final decision still depends on axle, drive system, bed, passengers and payload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3.5L PowerBoost: hybrid torque and onboard electricity

PowerBoost combines a gasoline engine and electric motor. Ford lists 420 horsepower, 570 lb-ft of torque, a maximum available 12,400-pound tow rating and a maximum available 1,740-pound payload. Pro Power Onboard is standard with this engine, which can matter to people who need electrical power for tools, equipment or devices at a work site or campsite. The available information does not establish fuel-economy savings or a single real-world electrical-output result for every configuration, so evaluate your actual electrical loads and usage.

Rydonair Short Antenna for Ford F150 2009-2027 & Bronco 2021-2023
  • EXACT FIT FOR YOUR F150: This short antenna for Ford F150 fits all 2009-2027 models including Raptor, King Ranch, Lariat, XLT, XL and Ford Bronco 2021-2023 (does NOT fit Bronco Sport or 2024+ Broncos).
  • LOW PROFILE, CAR WASH SAFE: Replace your 31-inch factory whip antenna with this 7-inch short antenna that gives your F150 a clean, sleek look. Built with an extremely high-strength mandrel inside so it will NOT bend or snap when you go through the automatic car wash. No more scraping your garage door either.
  • RECEPTION PERFORMANCE: Engineered through thousands of tests for a reception structure that outperforms standard short antennas on both AM and FM bands. Most short antennas lose signal outside the city — this one continues pulling in stations even 50 miles from town. Close to OEM performance in most conditions.
  • PREMIUM RUBBER WITH SHAPE MEMORY: Made from high-quality rubber that springs back into shape when bent, so it survives car washes, tree branches, and extreme weather without cracking or fading. The real carbon fiber column at the base adds durability and a premium look that holds up over years of driving.
  • EASY SCREW-ON INSTALL & 2-YEAR WARRANTY: No tools needed — just unscrew your old antenna and screw this one on in seconds. Backed by Rydonair's 2-year replacement guarantee and trusted by over 11,000 F150 and Bronco owners.

2.7L EcoBoost V6: adequate for lighter-duty plans

The 2.7L EcoBoost V6 is listed at 325 horsepower, 400 lb-ft, an 8,400-pound maximum available tow rating and a 1,775-pound maximum available payload. It appears on the XL equipment list and can suit buyers whose trailers, materials and passenger loads remain well below those limits. Check the truck’s payload label before adding a camper, heavy toolboxes or a large hitch load.

High-output EcoBoost and supercharged V8

Ford lists a high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and a 5.2L supercharged V8 for performance applications. The cited towing-guide excerpt does not provide their complete ratings, so do not apply the standard 3.5L EcoBoost or 5.0L V8 numbers to these engines. Use the detailed guide and the vehicle documentation for the exact performance truck.

Towing and payload: verify the truck, not the headline

Engine choice is only one part of capacity. Cab, bed, two- or four-wheel drive, axle ratio, tow package, wheels, accessories, passengers and cargo all influence the applicable limit. Payload is especially important because it must absorb people, luggage, tools, hitch hardware and trailer tongue weight. A trailer can be below the truck’s advertised tow maximum while still exceeding payload once the tongue, passengers and equipment are counted.

The configuration behind Ford’s highest published tow rating

Ford identifies an XLT SuperCrew 4×4 with a 6.5-foot box, Tow/Haul Package and Max Tow axle upgrade as the configuration with its highest maximum available tow rating. Ford says the Tow/Haul Package includes an integrated trailer brake controller and either a 3.55 or 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle, depending on powertrain. This is a specific build recipe; changing the cab, bed, engine, axle, wheels or options can change the rating.

A practical capacity check

  1. Read the payload label on the driver’s-side door jamb of the exact truck.
  2. Estimate the trailer’s loaded, not empty, weight and its actual tongue weight.
  3. Add every occupant, child seat, toolbox, bed load, hitch component and accessory.
  4. Keep the combined load within the door-label payload and the truck’s towing documentation.
  5. Confirm the trailer’s brakes, electrical connector, hitch class and weight-distribution requirements.

Do not rely on a salesperson’s memory or an online maximum copied from a different cab and axle. Ford’s own published guidance is the appropriate starting point, while the door label and exact vehicle documents control the truck you are buying.

Cab, bed and drivetrain choices

Ford lists Regular Cab with a 6.5- or 8-foot bed, SuperCab with a 6.5-foot bed, and SuperCrew with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed. Raptor models use a 5.5-foot bed. Exact availability depends on trim and powertrain.

Configuration Best fit Trade-off to check
Regular Cab, 6.5- or 8-foot bed Workloads needing a long cargo box and fewer passenger seats Limited passenger capacity; verify which engines and trims offer each bed
SuperCab, 6.5-foot bed Occasional rear passengers with a useful standard-length box Rear-seat access and comfort differ from SuperCrew; confirm rating for the selected build
SuperCrew, 5.5-foot bed Frequent passengers and easier rear-seat access Shorter cargo box; towing and payload depend on the complete configuration
SuperCrew, 6.5-foot bed Full-size rear seating plus additional cargo length Longer overall truck and potentially different availability or ratings
Raptor, 5.5-foot bed Performance off-road use Do not assume Raptor’s off-road hardware provides the highest conventional tow rating

Four-wheel drive can improve traction for launching a boat or traveling on loose surfaces, but it adds equipment and may alter ratings, weight and price. Select it for a demonstrated need rather than treating it as a universal upgrade.

Packages and 2026 changes to investigate

Tow/Haul and Max Tow equipment

For buyers who tow, identify the Tow/Haul Package, integrated trailer brake controller and Max Tow axle upgrade on the build sheet. Verify whether the selected powertrain receives the 3.55 or 3.73 electronic-locking rear axle Ford specifies for the package. A replacement controller or hitch component should be purchased only after confirming the truck’s exact year, trim, package and connector compatibility; not every buyer needs an additional controller.

PowerBoost availability

Ford identifies PowerBoost as available on more trims for 2026. Availability is not the same as standard equipment, so check the selected trim and cab/bed combination. Pro Power Onboard is standard with the PowerBoost engine, but the practical value depends on the devices you plan to run.

Connectivity and appearance packages

A Ford Connectivity Package is new for 2026, with one year included upon activation. Confirm what features require activation, what continues after the included period and whether a subscription is required. The STX Lobo Package is street-focused, pairs with the 5.0L V8 and uses 22-inch wheels. XLT adds new Chrome Appearance and Satin Platinum packages. Wheels, tires and appearance equipment can affect payload, ride, tire cost and availability, so include them in the capability check.

BlueCruise and driver assistance

Ford lists BlueCruise availability on selected trims. Treat it as an availability question for the exact build, not a guarantee that every premium F-150 includes it. Review the activation and subscription terms shown at purchase and keep your attention on the road even when driver-assistance features are engaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much should you budget?

Ford’s listed starting prices are useful for comparing trim entry points, not for estimating an out-the-door transaction. The published figures are $39,585 for XL, $41,855 for STX, $44,695 for XLT, $59,560 for Lariat, $64,915 for Tremor and $79,005 for Raptor. King Ranch and Platinum base MSRPs were not stated in the cited overview. Every listed MSRP excludes the $2,795 destination and delivery charge, taxes, government and dealer fees, finance charges, emissions-testing fees, optional equipment and extra-cost colors. Dealers set final prices.

Build the truck first, then compare the complete configured price. A lower trim with a required tow, axle, camera or seat package may cost more than its headline suggests, while a premium trim may include equipment you would otherwise add separately. Ask for the window sticker and a written breakdown of destination, options, fees and any subscription terms.

A configuration checklist for your dealer visit

  • Write down the trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight and brake requirements.
  • List the people, tools, cargo and accessories that will ride in the truck.
  • Choose the minimum bed length that handles your gear and the cab that fits your passengers.
  • Compare the 3.5L EcoBoost, 5.0L V8, PowerBoost and 2.7L EcoBoost using the exact published ratings for the build.
  • Ask whether the desired trim offers the engine, axle, drive system, tow package and bed combination together.
  • Read the door-jamb payload label before accepting a truck with dealer-installed accessories.
  • Confirm hitch receiver, integrated brake controller, trailer wiring and camera or trailer-assistance features.
  • Check activation and renewal terms for connectivity or driver-assistance subscriptions.
  • Obtain the window sticker and verify destination, taxes, fees, options and color charges.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by engine alone

A large engine cannot overcome a low payload rating, an unsuitable axle or an overloaded cab. Match the complete configuration to the trailer and cargo calculations.

Confusing tow rating with payload

Tow rating addresses the trailer under specified conditions; payload covers what is carried by the truck, including tongue weight. Check both limits independently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every XLT or Raptor is identical

Trim names cover multiple cabs, beds, engines, axles and packages. Two trucks wearing the same badge can have different ratings and equipment.

Using a maximum as a personal target

Advertised maxima are available only on qualifying configurations. Leave practical margin for passengers, weather, cargo changes and trailer loading rather than planning to operate at the ceiling.

Ignoring option weight

Large wheels, off-road hardware, luxury equipment, bed accessories and dealer-installed additions consume payload. Recheck the label after the truck is equipped.

Treating live pricing as permanent

Ford says vehicle information can change and may contain errors. Verify current price, availability and equipment in the configurator and window sticker, then have the dealer confirm the final order.

Ford states: “Your Ford dealer is the best source for the most up-to-date information on Ford vehicles.”

Which 2026 F-150 should you shortlist?

Shortlist XL when washable work-oriented equipment and a lower entry price matter most; STX when sport styling is important; XLT when you want the broadest mix of available comfort, camera and towing features; and Lariat when heated, ventilated seating and additional technology justify the higher price. Examine King Ranch or Platinum for premium treatments, Tremor for factory off-road equipment and Raptor for high-performance off-road driving. For frequent heavy towing, begin with the 3.5L EcoBoost and the appropriate tow and axle equipment, then validate the exact rating. Compare the 5.0L V8 and PowerBoost on the same vehicle-specific basis, remembering that PowerBoost adds standard Pro Power Onboard but has a different published payload maximum. The final choice is the truck whose door-label payload, towing documentation, cab, bed, drivetrain, packages and price all fit your actual use.
