What are the good things about the 2024 Nissan Sentra?
Strong standard safety-feature list
Every trim includes Nissan Safety Shield 360: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, high-beam assist and rear automatic braking. That gives the inexpensive S more active-safety equipment than a bare-bones specification would suggest. Equipment can vary on an individual used car, so confirm the window sticker or VIN-specific build.
Useful space for a compact sedan
Nissan lists 43.8 inches of front legroom, 34.9 inches in back and 14.3 cubic feet of trunk volume. Those numbers make the Sentra practical for commuting, grocery runs and occasional adult rear-seat passengers. The front seats were also judged comfortable in independent reviews.

Good non-hybrid fuel economy
The S and SV are rated at 34 mpg combined, while the SR is rated at 33 mpg. Nissan attributed the 2024 improvement to a revised Xtronic CVT and idle stop-start system. Simple controls and an easygoing ride
The Sentra’s controls are conventional and its ride is comfortable enough for everyday roads. It is easy to place in traffic and does not demand special knowledge from the driver, which is part of its appeal as basic transportation.
What are the bad things about the 2024 Nissan Sentra?
Acceleration is modest
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 149 horsepower, according to Car and Driver’s specifications. Reviewers found passing response sluggish, especially when the car is loaded or the road climbs. The engine is adequate for normal use but not strong for drivers who expect brisk merges.

The CVT gets loud under load
The automatic CVT keeps the engine in a rev range that can sound droney during hard acceleration. Reviewers also described a rubber-band-like feel. At a steady cruise it is less objectionable, but repeated hills, highway merges and passing maneuvers expose this weakness.

Stop-start refinement is not perfect
Cars.com’s SR test reported a shudder from the idle stop-start system. That is a subjective observation from one road test, not proof that every owner will experience the same behavior. A test drive in traffic is the best way to judge whether the restart feels acceptable to you.
The SR gives up a little economy
The SR’s 33-mpg combined rating and 38-mpg highway rating trail the S and SV. Nissan’s published values accompany the SR’s different wheel and tire setup, but the available evidence does not isolate wheel size as the sole cause of the difference.

How safe is the 2024 Nissan Sentra?
IIHS results are mixed by test category, so a single “safe” or “unsafe” label would hide useful detail. The IIHS page reports:
- Good: driver-side small-overlap front crashworthiness.
- Good: passenger-side small-overlap front crashworthiness.
- Good: original moderate-overlap front crashworthiness.
- Acceptable: updated side crashworthiness.
- Poor: headlights.
- Marginal: standard pedestrian front crash prevention.
IIHS notes that Nissan introduced a new driver-side frontal airbag for the 2024 model year and that some frontal ratings on the page are based on tests conducted by Nissan. Those are comparison estimates, not observed long-term owner results. A hybrid competitor can deliver a different fuel-economy proposition, so compare EPA city, highway and combined ratings using the same model year and trim.

Is the 2024 Nissan Sentra reliable?
The available road tests establish driving impressions, not long-term reliability. They do not support a definitive reliability rating for the 2024 Sentra. If you are shopping used, inspect service records and have an independent mechanic check the car; use the VIN to verify open recalls and completed campaigns. Nissan’s brochure excerpt specifies roadside assistance for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, but that is not a summary of every warranty term.
How should you compare it with a Civic, Elantra or Corolla?
Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla are relevant compact-sedan alternatives. Make the comparison on matched trims and the same model year rather than pairing a base Sentra with a costlier rival:
- Out-the-door price: include destination, dealer charges, taxes and incentives; do not reuse the Sentra’s old launch MSRP as a current quote.
- Fuel economy and powertrain: compare EPA city/highway/combined figures and whether a hybrid is available.
- Drive feel: test highway merging, passing and CVT or automatic behavior, not just a short parking-lot loop.
- Comfort and utility: sit in both rows, measure the trunk for your gear and check seat support.
- Safety evidence: compare the same IIHS categories and equipment levels, including headlights and pedestrian prevention.
This method prevents a low historical sticker price from outweighing differences you will live with every day.
The verdict
The 2024 Sentra is a reasonable low-cost, non-hybrid sedan for buyers who prioritize standard driver aids, comfortable everyday packaging and up to 34 mpg combined over acceleration. Its weak points—slow response, noisy CVT behavior, an occasionally abrupt stop-start system and uneven IIHS scores—are easy to identify on a test drive and in the safety results. Buy it for practical transportation, not because “cheap” guarantees low ownership cost or long-term reliability.
