12 Budget-Friendly Camper Vans That Won’t Break the Bank

The cheapest route into camper-van travel is usually a Ram ProMaster cargo van converted yourself. The lowest-priced clearly factory-built choice in this comparison is Winnebago's Solis Pocket. Here is how the 12 options differ in price, space, payload and conversion risk.

The cheapest path into camper-van travel is usually a cargo van you convert yourself, not a ready-to-use motorhome. In this comparison, Ram ProMaster cargo vans are the lowest documented new-vehicle starting points, while Winnebago’s Solis Pocket is the lowest-priced clearly factory-built camper van. Those are different products: a cargo-van MSRP buys a largely empty vehicle, whereas a Winnebago includes an integrated living system.

Every MSRP below is a starting figure, not a drive-away total. Taxes, title, registration, freight, dealer preparation, insurance, maintenance, conversion materials and labor can materially change what you spend.

What is the cheapest camper van?

There are two useful answers:

  • Cheapest documented new starting point: a Ram ProMaster 1500 cargo van. Ram’s current 2026 overview advertises a ProMaster starting MSRP of $44,105, while the specific trim configurations listed below begin at higher prices.
  • Cheapest clearly factory-built option in this comparison: the Winnebago Solis Pocket (36A), listed at a $143,475 starting MSRP on Winnebago’s current 2025 product page.

A ProMaster cargo van is not a camper until you add insulation, a bed, ventilation, electrical equipment, water storage, cabinetry and safety-approved installations. The Solis Pocket arrives as an integrated camper, with the manufacturer handling the conversion and providing a factory support channel.

12 budget-oriented camper-van choices

The table is ordered by vehicle type and configuration, not by total ownership cost. Official sources do not publish a standardized 12-model cost-of-ownership ranking, and a used van or a DIY conversion must be evaluated vehicle by vehicle.

Ram ProMaster 1500, low roof, 118-inch wheelbase $46,370 starting MSRP Small, lightly equipped weekend DIY build Low roof; standing-room layout is not practical. Shortest listed wheelbase. Cargo-van shell; you supply the conversion. Keep the build light.
Ram ProMaster 1500, low roof, 136-inch wheelbase $49,065 starting MSRP DIY layout needing more floor length without a high roof Low roof; 136 inches provides more layout length than the 118-inch van. Cargo-van shell; added length helps storage but does not create standing height.
Ram ProMaster 1500, high roof, 136-inch wheelbase $49,925 starting MSRP Compact DIY build where standing room matters High roof; the practical choice among these 1500 configurations for a standing-height interior. Cargo-van shell; budget for overhead cabinetry, ventilation and electrical work.
Ram ProMaster 2500, low roof, 136-inch wheelbase $50,665 starting MSRP A low-roof build with more capacity than a lightly equipped 1500 project Low roof; 136-inch wheelbase. Cargo-van shell; choose the heavier platform only when the finished weight warrants it.
Ram ProMaster 2500, high roof, 136-inch wheelbase $51,615 starting MSRP Balanced standing-height DIY conversion High roof; 136-inch wheelbase. Cargo-van shell; leaves room for a bed, galley and systems while remaining relatively compact.
Ram ProMaster 2500, high roof, 159-inch wheelbase $52,300 starting MSRP Longer standing-height layout High roof; longest 2500 body listed here. More room for storage and systems, but higher build complexity and parking demands.
Ram ProMaster 3500, low roof, 136-inch wheelbase $51,725 starting MSRP Low-roof project carrying substantial equipment Low roof; 136-inch wheelbase. Cargo-van shell; the 3500 platform makes sense only when the completed build’s weight justifies it.
Ram ProMaster 3500, high roof, 136-inch wheelbase $55,670 starting MSRP Standing-height conversion with heavier water, electrical or cabinetry installations High roof; 136-inch wheelbase. Higher-capacity donor platform; conversion still has to be engineered and weighed.
Ram ProMaster 3500, high roof, 159-inch wheelbase $53,325 starting MSRP The longest listed high-roof donor High roof; 159-inch wheelbase supports a bed, galley and storage. More interior planning freedom, with greater purchase, build and parking demands.
Used Ram ProMaster donor Standardized used price not stated by the official sources Lower acquisition cost when you can inspect and maintain a used vehicle Depends on the year, roof and wheelbase of the individual van. Check mileage, rust, accident history, maintenance records and payload remaining after conversion.
Winnebago Solis Pocket (36A) $143,475 starting MSRP on Winnebago’s current 2025 product page Buyers who want a ready-made, supported camper at the lowest clearly identified factory-built price here Exact standing-height and interior-dimension figures are not stated in the supplied product information. Factory-integrated camper systems and warranty support; confirm current equipment and dealer fees.
Winnebago Solis (59P) $156,254 starting MSRP on Winnebago’s current 2025 product page A larger, more flexible factory layout than the Pocket Exact standing-height and interior-dimension figures are not stated in the supplied product information. More factory integration than a donor van; still add freight, taxes, title, preparation and ownership costs.

Winnebago’s Solis and Solis Pocket pages also mention a Truma 30L Single Zone Cooler promotion. Promotions can change, so verify whether it is active and what equipment is included in the vehicle you are pricing.

Is it cheaper to convert a van yourself?

Usually, a DIY conversion has the lower purchase price because you are comparing a cargo shell with a completed recreational vehicle. That does not make the final project automatically cheap. The conversion budget must cover both parts and the time or labor needed to install them safely.

Build costs that belong in the first worksheet

  • Insulation, wall and ceiling panels, flooring and trim
  • Bed platform, seating, cabinetry and tie-down hardware
  • Ventilation, windows and bug screens
  • Battery, charging equipment, distribution, fuses, wiring and monitoring
  • Water tank, pump, plumbing, sink and wastewater handling
  • Cooking equipment, refrigerator or cooler and propane or electrical safety components
  • Fasteners, sealants, corrosion protection and tools
  • Professional inspections or installation for gas, electrical or structural work
  • Registration, insurance, maintenance and a contingency reserve

No official source in this comparison publishes a standard “ProMaster camper conversion cost.” A simple weekend build using owner labor and minimal systems cannot be priced like a full-time, professionally installed interior. Make a complete parts list before buying the van, then weigh the planned components and occupants against the vehicle’s remaining payload.

What is included from the factory?

ProMaster cargo vans

The Ram choices are donor vehicles. The body, drivetrain and commercial-van equipment come from the factory; the living area does not. You choose the floor plan, energy system, water system, heating, cooking equipment and finish level. That flexibility can protect a tight budget, but mistakes, delays and cost overruns are yours to solve.

Solis Pocket and Solis

The Winnebago models are factory-built campers with integrated layouts and systems. You pay substantially more up front for a finished vehicle, coordinated installation and a manufacturer and dealer support path. Exact warranty coverage and included equipment should be confirmed on the build sheet and purchase contract rather than assumed from the model name.

Can I stand up inside this van?

For the ProMaster choices, roof height is the decisive first filter: low-roof versions are suited to seated or crouched interiors, while high-roof versions are the practical starting point for standing-room layouts. Wheelbase changes usable floor length, not roof height. A 159-inch body can make room for a bed, galley and storage, but it also needs more space to build, maneuver and park.

Payload: the budget issue people discover too late

Ram cites up to 4,750 pounds of maximum payload and 524 cubic feet of maximum cargo space for the current 2026 ProMaster range. Those are vehicle-level maximums, not the payload remaining after your specific van, conversion, passengers, water, fuel, food and recreational equipment are loaded.

Start with the door-jamb payload label on the actual van. Subtract the conversion, occupants and trip gear, then leave a margin for water and changing loads. A 1500 may be appropriate for a very light weekend interior; a 2500 or 3500 can be sensible when the finished design is heavier, but buying the higher rating alone does not fix poor weight distribution or an overweight build.

Which affordable camper van is best for each buyer?

Lowest-cost entry and maximum customization

Choose a short-wheelbase ProMaster 1500 if you can accept a compact interior and are prepared to do the design and installation work yourself. The 118-inch low-roof version minimizes size and complexity; the 136-inch high-roof version is the more usable choice when standing room is non-negotiable.

More room without moving to a factory camper

A 2500 high-roof ProMaster with either wheelbase gives a stronger starting point for a standing-height layout. Select the 136-inch body for easier parking or the 159-inch body when a longer bed, galley and storage plan is more important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heavy systems and full-time equipment

Consider a 3500 only after a weighed design shows that the higher-capacity platform is needed. Large batteries, substantial water storage, dense cabinetry and multiple occupants can consume payload quickly.

Ready to travel with less construction risk

The Solis Pocket is the clearest factory-built budget choice in this set. The Solis costs more but targets buyers who want a larger, flexible factory layout and integrated support rather than a blank cargo interior.

Are camper vans worth the money?

They can be, but “worth it” depends on whether you value construction control or immediate usability. A DIY ProMaster can offer a lower entry price and a layout tailored to your needs, while demanding design time, installation skill, troubleshooting and ongoing maintenance. A Solis costs much more at purchase but packages the conversion, system integration and support into one vehicle.

Compare the complete ownership picture: purchase and conversion, financing, insurance, maintenance, storage, campsite fees, fuel and the resale condition of the finished van. If you will use the vehicle only occasionally, renting or building a very simple removable setup may be more rational than installing permanent systems. If you will travel often and value a known factory configuration, the premium for a finished camper may be easier to justify.

How to keep a DIY budget from overrunning

  1. Choose the floor plan before the van. Mark the bed, aisle, galley, water, battery and ventilation locations on a scale drawing.
  2. Price every component. Include fasteners, wire, fuses, sealants, trim and tools, not just the large appliances.
  3. Weigh the design. Use realistic component weights and include passengers, water, fuel and luggage.
  4. Reserve capacity and contingency. Do not plan to operate at the door-label maximum, and keep money available for discovered rust, mechanical repairs or redesign.
  5. Separate vehicle and conversion decisions. A low purchase price can disappear if the donor needs tires, brakes, suspension work or electrical troubleshooting.
  6. Verify legal and safety requirements locally. Registration classification, inspections, insurance and gas or electrical rules vary by jurisdiction.

Where the Winnebago Travato fits

The Travato is a useful comparison ceiling rather than a budget pick. Winnebago lists a $220,903 starting MSRP for the current 2025 model and describes it as a Ram ProMaster-based camper that sleeps up to two. That price places it well above the Solis Pocket, Solis and every unconverted ProMaster in this list, so it belongs in a premium comparison rather than a low-cost shortlist.

One practical accessory to price with the build

A 12V portable camper refrigerator or 30L camper cooler can be useful when a permanent refrigerator does not fit the first-stage budget. Check the exact product’s dimensions, power draw, battery requirements and current price before designing the cabinet or electrical system around it. The cooler promotion mentioned on the Solis pages is not a substitute for verifying the equipment in a specific vehicle deal.

Bottom line

For the lowest documented new-vehicle starting point, begin with a Ram ProMaster cargo van and treat the conversion as a separate engineering and budgeting project. For the lowest clearly identified factory-built option here, start with the Winnebago Solis Pocket. Choose the ProMaster when customization, owner labor and a lower entry price matter most; choose a Solis when an integrated camper, factory support and less construction risk are worth the much higher upfront cost.
