Buy the 1967 Pontiac GTO if you want Pontiac styling, the 400-cubic-inch engine family and a large, well-documented production base. Buy the 1967 Chevelle SS 396 if Chevrolet big-block character, SS-specific identity and readily identifiable specialist support matter more. In either case, the best purchase is the straight, documented car with the correct drivetrain—not necessarily the car with the more impressive badge or advertised horsepower.
These are close contemporaries built on the same 115-inch wheelbase, but they appeal to different owners. The GTO is the longer, more sculpted Pontiac with several 400 outputs and an optional dealer-installed Ram Air conversion. The Chevelle is the tighter-looking coke-bottle Chevrolet whose SS package centers on the 396 big-block. Your choice should follow body style, engine code, authenticity, rust condition and the cost of putting the car right.

1967 GTO and Chevelle SS 396 at a glance
| Question | 1967 Pontiac GTO | 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine family | 400-cid V8 (the 389 was stroked for 1967) | 396-cid V8 |
| Documented outputs in the cited references | 255 bhp two-barrel; 335 bhp four-barrel; two 360-bhp performance configurations, including the HO | Hagerty lists the L35 at 325 hp and describes the L34 at 350 hp; Ground Up/SS396 identifies 325-, 360- and 375-hp variants |
| Wheelbase | 115 inches | 115 inches |
| Length in the cited configuration | 206.6 inches | 197 inches for the sport coupe |
| 1967 production figure established by the cited source | 81,722 GTOs sold, all body styles | No comparable, all-body-style SS 396 total was established |
| Current reference value | Configuration and condition dependent; obtain a current appraisal | Hagerty July 2026 #3-good L35 sport coupe guide: $47,033 low to $56,800 high |
The output figures are not interchangeable dyno results. They are period configuration ratings from different references, and a car’s engine suffix, induction, transmission, axle ratio, tune and condition determine what it actually does. Treat an advertised engine or option as unverified until the stampings and paperwork support it.
Why choose the 1967 Pontiac GTO?
A broader 400-cid performance range
For 1967, Pontiac replaced the GTO’s 389 with a 400-cid V8. Hagerty’s model reference lists a 255-bhp two-barrel that was automatic-only, a 335-bhp four-barrel and two 360-bhp performance configurations, one of them the High Output (HO). That gives the GTO buyer several legitimate factory identities rather than one generic engine claim.

Ram Air was available as a dealer-installed conversion kit rather than a single universally configured assembly-line package. A car advertised as a Ram Air GTO therefore needs especially careful verification of the kit, induction pieces, paperwork and the date-appropriate engine components. A non-matching car with a later intake or air cleaner may still be enjoyable, but it should not be priced as a fully authenticated example.
Distinctive Pontiac design
The 1967 GTO received a metal-mesh grille, divided taillamps, larger rocker panels and prominent GTO emblems. Its 206.6-inch length gives it a visibly longer profile than the cited Chevelle sport coupe, while the shared 115-inch wheelbase preserves similar basic cabin proportions. Buyers who want a more formal, sculpted presentation often prefer the Pontiac’s visual presence.
Production and parts reality
Hagerty records 81,722 GTOs sold in 1967. That broad production base can make ordinary trim and documentation easier to locate than on a very low-volume special, but it does not make every body style, color, transmission or engine combination common. Pontiac-specific items—correct carburetors, brackets, air-cleaner assemblies, emblems, trim and HO hardware—still require careful sourcing. Confirm availability and part numbers before buying a project.

Big-block identity in several documented levels
The SS 396 is defined by Chevrolet’s 396-cid V8. In the cited Hagerty material, the L35 configuration is rated at 325 hp and the model description identifies the L34 at 350 hp. Ground Up/SS396’s restoration reference describes 325-, 360- and 375-hp 396 variants. Those figures represent different engine codes and equipment, not interchangeable badges.

Ask for the engine suffix, casting information, carburetor, heads, intake, exhaust manifolds and transmission before accepting a claimed L34, 360-hp or 375-hp specification. A seller’s description that says only “396” does not establish the high-output version. If the code cannot be verified, value the car as a verification project rather than as a documented top-tier SS.
Compact proportions and SS presentation
The cited Chevelle sport coupe is 197 inches long on the same 115-inch wheelbase. Its mild 1967 facelift and coke-bottle body give it a tighter, more muscular stance than the longer GTO. SS badging, big-block hardware and the associated trim create a focused identity that appeals to buyers who want the Chevrolet package rather than a standard Chevelle fitted with a replacement engine.
Specialist restoration support
Chevelle SS 396 documentation and reproduction parts are easy to identify through specialist catalogs, including dedicated 1967 Chevelle restoration resources with an original-equipment brochure and SS396 parts information. Search for “1967 Chevelle SS 396 restoration parts,” then verify fitment, seller reputation and part numbers. Reproduction availability does not eliminate labor, paint, chrome or bodywork costs, and incorrect parts can reduce authenticity.

There is no honest single answer without specifying the exact engine code and drivetrain. The GTO range spans a 255-bhp two-barrel automatic through 335-bhp and 360-bhp combinations. The Chevelle range spans the cited 325-, 350-, 360- and 375-hp 396 variants. A 375-hp Chevelle and a 255-bhp GTO are not meaningful rivals, while a healthy 360-bhp GTO and a 360-bhp Chevelle may be separated more by gearing, tires, weight, launch and driver than by the rating on the fender.

Period horsepower labels also came from different rating practices. Do not infer a quarter-mile result from the badge alone, and do not treat a modern chassis-dyno number as a factory specification. Compare the following on the individual car:
- Engine suffix and whether the block, heads, intake and carburetor are correct for that code.
- Transmission type and gear ratios, including whether an automatic has the correct converter.
- Rear-axle ratio, limited-slip equipment and tire size.
- Compression, oil pressure, cooling performance and ignition tune.
- Actual weight, brake condition and the driver’s ability to launch the car without wheelspin.
For a purchase decision, “faster” should mean the documented, mechanically sound car you can use confidently. A tired high-output engine with overheating or a slipping clutch is a slower and more expensive ownership experience than a healthy lower-output example.
Body style changes both value and usability
Hardtop, sport coupe and convertible configurations affect price, structural inspection and day-to-day use. A pillarless hardtop offers the open-window look many collectors want but requires close inspection of door, quarter-window and roof alignment. A convertible adds top-frame, floor and cowl checks and can command a substantial premium when original and documented. A sport coupe may cost less to enter, yet its value still depends on engine code, factory options, rust repair and the quality of restoration.
Choose the body style you will actually drive. Long-distance use favors a solid roof, quiet weather seals and correctly rebuilt brakes and cooling system. Show-oriented ownership may justify rare colors, unusual interiors or a high-output code, but only when those details are supported by the car’s tags and paperwork.

Authenticity: what “numbers matching” should mean
“Numbers matching” is often used loosely. Establish the identity of the car in layers:
- Decode the VIN. Confirm model, series and body style against the title and the physical car.
- Read the cowl or body tag. Record paint, trim and build information, then compare it with the current colors and interior.
- Inspect engine stampings. Photograph the block casting and stamped pad; verify the date, suffix and application against the claimed 400 or 396 specification.
- Verify the transmission. Check its identification marks, date and linkage, not just the shifter or console.
- Check the rear axle. Confirm the ratio, housing, casting and date, and determine whether the limited-slip unit is original or later.
- Match the paperwork. Invoices, protect-o-plates, broadcast sheets, dealer records and restoration photographs can connect components to the car’s history.
An original block installed in a car with the wrong carburetor and rear axle is not equivalent to a fully documented drivetrain. Conversely, a correctly rebuilt period block with transparent records may be a better ownership proposition than a cosmetically perfect car with no traceable history.

Structure and corrosion
- Put the car on a lift and inspect the frame, body mounts, floors, rocker panels, wheelhouses and quarter panels.
- Look behind fresh undercoating, inside trunk seams and around windshield and rear-window channels for concealed rust.
- Check door, hood, trunk and quarter-panel gaps for accident repair or sagging structure.
- Use a magnet and paint-thickness readings where appropriate, but do not mistake a smooth exterior for sound metal.
Structural rust is more important than a glossy repaint. Obtain photographs of any replaced floor, quarter or rocker section and ask whether the repair was welded into solid metal or simply covered.

Engine, cooling and fuel system
- Insist on a genuinely cold start. Listen for bearing knock, valve-train noise and timing-chain rattle.
- Record cold and hot oil pressure, idle quality and charging voltage.
- Watch coolant temperature in traffic and during a road test; inspect the radiator, fan, shroud, hoses and overflow behavior.
- Check for fuel leaks, carburetor flooding, exhaust smoke and evidence of modern parts substituted for the claimed factory induction.
Compression and leak-down tests are worthwhile on an expensive example. A high-output claim without matching heads, carburetor, intake and exhaust hardware should be priced as an incomplete specification.

Transmission, clutch and rear axle
- On a manual car, check clutch take-up, gear engagement, synchronizer noise and hydraulic leaks.
- On an automatic, verify smooth engagement, shift timing, kickdown operation and fluid condition.
- Listen for differential whine on acceleration, deceleration and steady cruise.
- Inspect driveshaft, universal joints, pinion seal and axle bearings for play or leaks.
Brakes, steering and suspension
- Confirm the master cylinder, lines, hoses and wheel cylinders or calipers are sound and free of leaks.
- Determine whether the GTO has its optional power front discs and dual master-cylinder equipment, and document the Chevelle’s brake configuration rather than assuming it from the SS badge.
- Check steering-box play, idler and pitman arms, ball joints, bushings and spring condition.
- Perform several controlled stops; pulling, vibration or a sinking pedal requires repair before normal driving.
Trim, glass and interior
- Price missing emblems, grille pieces, moldings, seats, dash parts, glass and weather seals before negotiating.
- Check that windows wind up squarely and that the doors, trunk and hood latch securely.
- Inspect the wiring for amateur repairs, overheated connectors and non-factory switches.
- Compare upholstery patterns, carpet, console, gauges and steering wheel with the claimed trim level.
Specialist restoration parts exist for both cars, but paint, body alignment, chrome and labor can exceed the parts bill. Get a written estimate from a shop familiar with 1960s unibody and body-on-frame GM construction before committing to a project.
Investment and market context
Neither badge guarantees an investment return. Condition, body style, documented engine code, transmission, options, rust history and the quality of restoration determine what buyers will pay. The GTO’s 81,722-unit 1967 sales figure describes total GTO production, not the number of surviving cars in any one configuration. No comparable all-body-style SS 396 production total is established here, so an unqualified “rarer than the GTO” claim is not a sound valuation method.
Hagerty’s July 2026 #3-good guide for an L35 Chevelle SS 396 sport coupe lists $47,033 at the low end and $56,800 at the high end. Those are dated, configuration-specific guide figures, not a guaranteed transaction price and not a valuation for every SS 396 body style or engine code. Obtain a current appraisal or valuation for the exact car after inspection, and tell the appraiser which components are original, rebuilt, replaced or undocumented.
How to protect your budget
- Reserve money for brakes, cooling, tires, fuel-system work and electrical repairs even on a running car.
- Get a body-shop estimate for structural rust before paying a premium for a fresh paint job.
- Price correct trim and glass individually; a long list of small missing pieces can become a large bill.
- Keep a contingency for hidden damage discovered after disassembly.
- Buy documentation with the car. A lower-priced, transparent driver is usually safer than an expensive “numbers-matching” claim that cannot be proved.
GTO or Chevelle: a practical decision framework
| If your priority is… | Lean toward… | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pontiac styling and a longer, more formal profile | GTO | Correct grille, taillamps, rocker trim, emblems and body alignment |
| 400-cid Pontiac performance identity | GTO | 400 suffix, carburetor, heads, intake and any HO or Ram Air documentation |
| Chevrolet 396 big-block character | Chevelle SS 396 | L35, L34 or other claimed suffix plus matching induction and exhaust parts |
| Specialist SS restoration information and identifiable reproduction parts | Chevelle SS 396 | Correct 1967 fitment, supplier reputation and part numbers |
| Best long-term value protection | Whichever is better documented | VIN, body tag, drivetrain stampings, records and a professional inspection |
| Lowest restoration risk | Neither by badge alone | Rust, prior repairs, brake condition, cooling and total project estimate |
How to choose between two actual cars
- Remove the badge from the decision. Write down each car’s body style, engine suffix, transmission, axle, options and documentation.
- Rank structure first. Reject severe frame, rocker, floor or cowl corrosion unless the purchase price includes a realistic restoration budget.
- Separate original from correct. Mark each major component as original, period-correct replacement, later replacement or unknown.
- Calculate the finished cost. Add purchase price, transport, inspection, mechanical work, brakes, cooling, tires, trim, paint and a contingency reserve.
- Value usability. Decide whether you need reliable cruising, occasional shows, drag-strip use or a long-term restoration; the right gearing, brakes and cooling matter more than a sales description.
- Have a specialist confirm the claim. A pre-purchase inspection by a shop that knows 1960s Pontiac and Chevrolet muscle cars can identify incorrect stampings and expensive structural repairs.
Verdict
The 1967 GTO is the stronger choice for a buyer drawn to Pontiac design, the 400-cid family and a wide range of documented performance configurations. The Chevelle SS 396 is the better fit for someone who specifically wants Chevrolet’s 396 big-block identity, SS presentation and a clearly defined specialist parts ecosystem. For either model, buy the healthiest, best-documented body you can afford. A verified engine code, solid structure and functioning brakes will protect your money and your enjoyment better than an unproven horsepower claim.
