The 10 most reliable pickup choices from roughly the 2016–2025 model years are the Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tundra, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ford F-150, Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, and Chevrolet Colorado.
That is a shortlist of the nameplates and generations with the strongest reliability evidence—not a promise that every truck wearing one of these badges will be dependable. The most important buying distinction is often the generation: a mature 2016–2023 Tacoma, for example, has more long-term evidence than a redesigned 2024–2025 model. Maintenance, powertrain, corrosion, recalls, accident history, and previous towing or off-road use can easily outweigh the ranking.

How these trucks were selected
“Reliable” does not mean a truck will never break. It means the nameplate and generation have stronger evidence of avoiding serious problems, lasting to high mileage, or producing fewer owner-reported problems than comparable pickups. Those are different measurements.

- iSeeCars uses large vehicle populations and emphasizes useful lifespan and the likelihood of reaching high mileage.
- J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study measures owner-reported problems after three years. Its results are most useful as a short-term dependability signal.
- Consumer Reports uses owner survey data across many trouble areas and publishes model-year reliability histories and predictions.
The list below combines those types of evidence instead of treating them as interchangeable. The order is an editorial ranking of the most defensible choices from approximately the 2016–2025 model years. It primarily covers light-duty and midsize pickups, not heavy-duty work trucks such as the F-250, Silverado 2500HD, or Ram 2500.

A truck’s engine, transmission, drivetrain, production batch, maintenance history, corrosion exposure, accident history, and previous workload can matter more than the badge on the grille. A well-maintained truck ranked ninth can be a far better purchase than a neglected example ranked first.

1. Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma is the strongest midsize-truck choice in the available evidence. iSeeCars places it first among midsize trucks, and J.D. Power ranks it highest in the 2025 Midsize Pickup segment. That combination gives the Tacoma both a strong long-term durability signal and a strong recent dependability result.
For a used buyer, the most conservative target is the mature 2016–2023 generation. The redesigned 2024–2025 Tacoma may eventually establish an equally strong record, but it has not had the same amount of time to accumulate high-mileage and repair data. Early reliability results should not be treated as proof of long-term durability.

Inspect carefully: Check the frame and underbody for rust or repairs, particularly on trucks from corrosion-prone regions. Look for evidence of neglected drivetrain service, suspension damage, aftermarket modifications, hard trail use, and frequent towing. Confirm that all recalls have been completed by VIN. “Toyota reliability” is a reason to investigate a Tacoma; it is not a substitute for inspecting the actual truck.
2. Honda Ridgeline
The Honda Ridgeline is one of the best choices for someone who wants a pickup’s bed and utility without accepting the ride and maneuverability compromises of a conventional truck. iSeeCars places it among the leading midsize trucks for reliability.
Unlike the Tacoma, Frontier, Ranger, Colorado, and Canyon, the Ridgeline uses a unibody layout rather than the traditional body-on-frame construction used by most pickups. That helps explain its car-like ride, useful cabin, and everyday practicality. It is best viewed as a comfortable utility vehicle with a pickup bed, not as a direct replacement for a heavy-duty work truck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest fit: Commuting, family transportation, light hauling, occasional towing, and buyers who value cabin usability and ride quality.
Inspect carefully: Match the truck’s actual payload and towing ratings to your trailer and cargo needs. Buyers who need maximum payload, serious off-road articulation, frequent heavy towing, or demanding work-site durability should compare the specifications and construction of body-on-frame alternatives. Check the bed, tailgate, suspension, underbody, fluids, and service records just as you would on any other used pickup.
3. Nissan Frontier
The Frontier earns a place because it combines a conventional truck layout with favorable long-term reliability evidence from iSeeCars. It is a sensible choice for shoppers who prefer a traditional midsize pickup with relatively straightforward controls and a truck-oriented driving position.

- Easy Installation with Lifetime Protection: Protect your truck bed in minutes with a simple drop-in design - just unroll, place, and go! Backed by Rough Country's limited lifetime warranty.
Do not treat every Frontier from the decade as the same vehicle. The mature 2016–2019 trucks belong to an older, well-established design. The 2020–2021 model years are transition years that deserve model-year-specific research. The current generation began for 2022, so 2022–2025 Frontiers should be evaluated as a newer group with less long-term history.
Best fit: Buyers wanting a conventional midsize pickup without moving to a full-size truck.
Inspect carefully: Evaluate transmission behavior during cold and warm driving, confirm cooling-system maintenance, and look for frame corrosion. Check for signs of towing, off-road use, suspension impact, and neglected fluid changes. A favorable ranking does not eliminate the need for a VIN-specific recall check and a review of service records.
4. Toyota Tundra
The Tundra has one of the strongest long-term full-size durability signals in the research: iSeeCars ranks it first among full-size trucks. That is an important reason it remains on this list, but the Tundra needs a more careful year-by-year explanation than its reputation often receives.
The most conservative used recommendation is a well-maintained 2016–2021 V8-era Tundra. Toyota redesigned the truck for 2022, introducing a new generation and different powertrain choices. Recent Consumer Reports coverage has been more cautious about Tundra reliability than the older reputation might suggest. A 2022–2025 truck is not automatically a bad purchase, but it deserves stricter inspection, documentation, and recall scrutiny.
Best fit: Full-size buyers who want a traditional pickup and place a high value on Toyota’s established truck history.
Inspect carefully: Identify the exact engine and drivetrain, and distinguish hybrid from non-hybrid versions. Review maintenance records, software or campaign documentation, and recall completion. Check for frame corrosion, towing wear, fluid leaks, suspension damage, and evidence that the truck was used beyond its ratings. The Tundra’s nameplate-level durability record cannot guarantee that every engine generation or production batch will perform alike.
5. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
The Silverado 1500 is supported by both long-term and shorter-term dependability evidence. iSeeCars places it near the top of its full-size-truck results, while J.D. Power ranks the Chevrolet Silverado highest in the 2025 Large Light-Duty Pickup segment.
Its greatest practical advantage is variety. Used shoppers can find multiple cab and bed configurations, several engines and transmissions, different towing packages, and a large supply of replacement parts and service expertise. That broad availability makes it easier to find a truck that fits a particular job—but it also means a Silverado should never be judged only by its model name.

Inspect carefully: Evaluate the exact model year, engine, transmission, four-wheel-drive system, trim electronics, and maintenance schedule. Test the transmission under varied conditions, inspect the cooling system and underbody, and operate cameras, sensors, infotainment, climate controls, and trailer equipment. A Silverado with a documented history and the right powertrain is a much more defensible purchase than an unknown truck selected solely because it is common.
6. GMC Sierra 1500
The GMC Sierra 1500 shares substantial engineering with the Silverado 1500 and appears among iSeeCars’ leading full-size reliability results. J.D. Power also lists the Sierra among the top models in its 2025 Large Light-Duty Pickup dependability results.
The Sierra is a natural alternative for shoppers who prefer GMC trim levels, cabin features, styling, or local dealer availability. The relationship with the Silverado can make parts and service easier to find, but shared architecture does not mean every year, engine, transmission, electronic package, or maintenance history will produce the same ownership experience.
Best fit: Buyers seeking full-size capability with GMC equipment and design preferences.
Inspect carefully: Compare the specific Sierra with equivalent Silverados instead of paying a premium for the badge without a corresponding condition or equipment advantage. Check the powertrain, service intervals, towing history, four-wheel-drive operation, electronics, suspension, and recall status. Look for commercial use, excessive idling, neglected fluids, and trailer-related wear.
7. Ford F-150
The F-150 belongs on the list because of its enormous used-market presence, broad configuration range, and improving current reliability signal. Consumer Reports’ current reporting describes the F-150 and F-150 Hybrid as improving from below-average to average reliability. That is a qualified recommendation—not evidence that every F-150 leads every competing truck.
For used buyers, mature 2016–2020 examples may be easier to evaluate because they have more accumulated owner and repair history than the newest redesign years. Later trucks can still be sensible choices, but the exact engine, transmission, turbocharging system, hybrid components, electronics, and production year deserve individual review.

Best fit: Buyers needing the widest selection of cabs, bed lengths, engines, towing setups, payload configurations, and dealer or service coverage.
Inspect carefully: Do not buy an F-150 by engine label alone. Verify the complete powertrain and equipment package, then review maintenance for oil, cooling, transmission, four-wheel-drive, and turbo or hybrid systems where applicable. Test all driver-assistance features, cameras, screens, power accessories, and trailer controls. A low-mileage F-150 with incomplete records can be riskier than a higher-mileage truck that was serviced consistently and used within its ratings.
8. Ford Ranger
The Ranger is a credible midsize pickup and appears in iSeeCars’ reliable-truck results. The U.S. model returned for 2019, making 2019–2023 trucks the more mature group for a used buyer. Ford redesigned the Ranger for 2024, creating a natural divide between the outgoing trucks and the newer generation.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Inspect carefully: Favor a 2019–2023 Ranger with complete maintenance records if your priority is the largest available body of ownership history. The 2024–2025 trucks may prove durable, but early reliability results cannot answer every long-term question. Check the transmission, cooling system, turbocharged engine components, four-wheel-drive system, suspension, and signs of trailer or off-road use. Confirm recalls and software campaigns by VIN.
9. GMC Canyon
The GMC Canyon is included because iSeeCars places it near the top of the midsize-truck reliability results and J.D. Power includes it among the leading models in its 2025 Midsize Pickup dependability results.
The Canyon has an important relationship with the Chevrolet Colorado: the two share substantial engineering, but a corporate relationship does not make every trim, engine, transmission, feature package, or model year identical in ownership. The 2023 redesign also means older and newer Canyons should be researched separately. For a used buyer, 2016–2022 trucks have a longer operating history, while 2023–2025 trucks need more scrutiny for early software, electronic, and generation-specific issues.
Best fit: Buyers seeking a traditional midsize truck with more body-on-frame capability than a unibody pickup and a preference for GMC styling or equipment.

Inspect carefully: Confirm the engine and transmission, inspect the suspension and frame, test four-wheel drive and low range where fitted, and operate every camera, sensor, screen, and climate control. Verify recall repairs and software updates. Compare the Canyon against a Colorado with the same mechanical equipment; condition and documentation should decide the purchase more than trim branding.
10. Chevrolet Colorado
The Colorado rounds out the list with support from both iSeeCars’ long-term results and J.D. Power’s 2025 Midsize Pickup findings. It offers the traditional truck layout, multiple configurations, and more truck-oriented capability than a unibody pickup for buyers who do not need a full-size model.
As with the Canyon, the Colorado spans distinct generations and powertrains. Separate the mature 2016–2022 generation from the redesigned 2023–2025 trucks. A broad statement that “the Colorado is reliable” hides the information a used buyer actually needs: which engine, which transmission, which year, how it was used, and whether its recalls and updates were completed.
Best fit: Buyers wanting a conventional midsize pickup with varied cab, drivetrain, and off-road configurations.
Inspect carefully: Look for drivetrain, electrical, suspension, and underbody problems. Test the truck cold and at operating temperature, scan for stored and pending codes, operate the four-wheel-drive system and electronic features, and check for evidence of towing or trail use. Treat a clean example with complete records as the goal—not merely a favorable ranking.

Why some popular trucks are not in the top ten
Ram 1500
Individual Ram 1500s can be satisfactory, and its ride comfort can make it appealing. However, the available evidence is not strong enough for a broad top-ten reliability recommendation covering the 2016–2025 period. Consumer Reports describes the 2025 Ram 1500 as much less reliable than other vehicles of the same model year and reports five recalls for that model year. Its broader 2026 reporting also places the Ram 1500 among the least reliable vehicles in its survey.
That does not prove that every Ram 1500 is a poor purchase. It means buyers should not treat the entire nameplate as one of the decade’s safest reliability bets. A specific Ram with excellent records, a completed recall history, a clean inspection, and the right price may still make sense—but it needs more truck-specific due diligence.
Jeep Gladiator and emerging electric pickups
The Gladiator may suit buyers who prioritize open-air driving and Jeep off-road capability, but it does not have the same depth of mature, decade-spanning reliability evidence as the selected trucks. New electric pickups and recently launched generations face the same limitation: they may eventually prove reliable, but long-term failure and high-mileage data take time to accumulate. Early enthusiasm, warranty coverage, or a strong first-year impression is not the same as proven durability.
The used-truck inspection checklist
Reliability rankings help narrow the search. They do not replace a vehicle-specific inspection. Use this process before leaving a deposit.
- Define the job first. Write down the trailer weight, cargo, passengers, bed length, four-wheel-drive needs, and expected annual mileage. Verify the truck’s payload and towing ratings for its exact configuration. A reliable truck that is undersized for the job is still the wrong purchase.
- Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall database. Confirm that safety recalls were completed, not merely announced. Recall status can change, so perform this check immediately before buying. Ask the seller or dealer for repair documentation when the database shows an open or completed campaign.
- Order a vehicle-history report. Use a vehicle-history report to compare the title, odometer, ownership timeline, reported accidents, flood or salvage indicators, and recorded service context against the seller’s claims. A report is useful evidence, not a guarantee: not every accident or repair is reported.
- Inspect the frame and underbody. Look for structural rust, fresh undercoating hiding repairs, bent or welded sections, fluid leaks, damaged crossmembers, crushed skid plates, and corrosion around brake and fuel lines. Trucks from salted roads and coastal regions deserve especially close inspection.
- Start it cold. Ask to see the truck before it has been warmed up. Listen for abnormal timing, valvetrain, exhaust, belt, drivetrain, or cold-start noises. Watch the instrument panel while warning lights complete their normal startup checks.
- Scan the vehicle. An OBD2 scanner for used trucks can reveal stored or pending diagnostic trouble codes and help you ask better questions. It cannot certify reliability. A seller may have recently cleared codes, some faults may not yet have set a code, and a clean scan says nothing about rust, worn suspension, poor maintenance, or hidden collision damage.
- Test the mechanical systems. Drive at city and highway speeds. Check shifting, braking, steering, wheel bearings, suspension noise, vibration, cooling-system behavior, and four-wheel-drive engagement. Where equipped, test low range, locking differentials, trailer-brake equipment, cameras, sensors, climate controls, infotainment, and power accessories.
- Look for previous workload. Uneven tire wear, hitch damage, bed dents, aftermarket wiring, worn seat bolsters, overheated fluids, heavy-duty brake wear, suspension modifications, and trail damage can indicate towing, commercial, or off-road use. Use is not automatically disqualifying, but it affects price and inspection priorities.
- Hire an independent mechanic. Have a shop that does not represent the seller inspect the frame, suspension, steering, brakes, fluids, drivetrain, cooling system, and underbody. Pay for the inspection even if the seller provides a recent inspection report.
- Price the risks honestly. Budget for tires, fluids, brakes, batteries, deferred maintenance, registration, and known service intervals. If considering an extended service contract for a used truck, read the exclusions, deductibles, eligibility rules, inspection requirements, coverage limits, and claim procedures. It should be a separate financial decision, not a reason to overlook a bad inspection.
How to choose between the ten
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Midsize, body-on-frame durability | Toyota Tacoma | Strongest midsize evidence in the supplied results and a long-established truck history | Inspect rust, off-road wear, and the newer generation carefully |
| Comfortable daily use | Honda Ridgeline | Car-like ride, practical cabin, and useful bed | Less appropriate for extreme towing or technical off-road work |
| A straightforward conventional midsize truck | Nissan Frontier | Truck-oriented layout and favorable long-term evidence | Separate older, transition, and current generations |
| Full-size durability history | Toyota Tundra | Strong long-term full-size signal, especially among mature trucks | Be much more careful with 2022–2025 powertrains and recalls |
| Configuration and service availability | Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500 | Many configurations and broad parts and service support | Exact engine, transmission, electronics, and maintenance history matter |
| Maximum variety in the used market | Ford F-150 | Huge supply and the broadest range of configurations | More powertrain and electronic combinations to research |
| A smaller truck with useful capability | Ford Ranger | Practical midsize size and established 2019–2023 used examples | The 2024 redesign has less long-term evidence |
| GM midsize equipment preferences | GMC Canyon or Chevrolet Colorado | Traditional truck capability and broad configuration choices | Compare generations and exact mechanical packages |
Bottom line
The safest way to use this list is as a shortlist, not a guarantee. The Tacoma is the strongest midsize starting point in the available evidence; the Ridgeline is the better everyday choice when comfort matters more than heavy-duty capability; and the Tundra, Silverado, Sierra, and F-150 are the main full-size candidates. The Frontier, Ranger, Canyon, and Colorado can also be strong purchases when the year and powertrain are chosen carefully.
Before buying any of them, confirm the VIN’s recall status, review a history report, scan the electronics, inspect for corrosion and abuse, and pay an independent mechanic to examine the truck. Maintenance, condition, and correct sizing for the job matter more than a ranking position.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Toyota Tacoma the most reliable pickup truck?
The Toyota Tacoma has the strongest midsize-truck evidence in the supplied research: iSeeCars ranks it first among midsize trucks, and J.D. Power ranks it highest in the 2025 Midsize Pickup segment. That does not make every Tacoma trouble-free. For used buyers, the mature 2016–2023 generation is easier to recommend than the redesigned 2024–2025 trucks because it has more accumulated long-term history.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich model years should I target when buying one of these trucks used?
For a conservative used purchase, mature generations generally have more repair and high-mileage evidence than a newly redesigned truck. Examples include the 2016–2023 Tacoma, 2016–2021 V8-era Tundra, 2016–2020 F-150, 2019–2023 Ranger, and the older 2016–2019 Frontier. These are evidence-based targets, not universal “safe years”; engine, transmission, maintenance, corrosion, and use still determine the individual truck’s condition.
Are the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 equally reliable?
Not necessarily. The Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 share substantial engineering, but exact engines, transmissions, trim electronics, production years, service histories, and previous use can differ. Compare trucks with equivalent mechanical equipment and choose based on condition, documentation, inspection results, and price rather than assuming the badges are interchangeable.
Is the Honda Ridgeline suitable for heavy-duty truck work?
No. The Ridgeline uses a unibody construction, which contributes to its comfortable, car-like driving experience. It is a strong choice for commuting, family use, light hauling, and occasional towing. Buyers who need heavy towing, maximum payload, severe off-road articulation, or demanding work-site use should compare its exact ratings with body-on-frame alternatives.
Can an OBD2 scanner prove that a used truck is reliable?
No. An OBD2 scan can reveal stored or pending diagnostic trouble codes and help identify questions for the seller or mechanic. It cannot detect every mechanical problem, prove that maintenance was performed, or certify that a truck is reliable. Codes may have been cleared, and a clean scan cannot reveal structural rust, worn suspension, flood damage, or hidden collision repairs.

The best reliable pickup is not simply the highest-ranked badge; it is a well-maintained example from a mature generation that fits your towing, payload, and daily-use needs. Target the model-year guidance above, then verify the individual truck’s history, recall status, and mechanical condition before purchase.
