A yoke is a design tradeoff, not a proven safety upgrade. Its open upper section can leave more of the instrument display unobstructed, but the missing rim changes how drivers grip and turn the wheel. There is no established objective winner: comfort and familiarity vary, and the available evidence does not establish that yokes improve or worsen crash outcomes or steering performance compared with round wheels.
What a steering yoke changes
A conventional steering wheel has a continuous circular rim. A yoke keeps the side and lower sections but leaves the upper section open. That changes the cockpit’s appearance and can give the driver a less obstructed view of the instruments, while also removing a familiar place to grip the wheel.
Those are design characteristics, not proof of better visibility in every driving position or of improved safety. No credible controlled comparison establishing a yoke’s effect on crash outcomes or steering performance relative to a round wheel was identified.

How the grip feels is subjective. If you are choosing a vehicle, drive the exact yoke-equipped and round-wheel versions you are considering. Try ordinary turns and the larger steering inputs you make in parking or tight maneuvers; a static look at the cockpit cannot tell you whether the grip suits you.

What Tesla owners should know before a retrofit
Tesla’s Model S/X Yoke Steering Wheel Retrofit is not a universal fitment. Tesla says it is compatible only with Model S and Model X vehicles configured with a round steering wheel, and excludes Model S and Model X Long Range vehicles produced from June 2, 2025 onward. Check the exact vehicle configuration and current product availability with Tesla before arranging a change.
Airbag compatibility is a critical part of the conversion. Tesla service material says round-wheel and yoke airbags are not interchangeable, and its retrofit instructions require a compatible replacement airbag. What the 2024 recall does—and does not—show
A Tesla/NHTSA recall notice dated January 2, 2024, described certain customer-requested retrofits in which a round wheel or yoke may have been paired with the airbag for the other configuration. The notice warned that the mismatch could decrease airbag deployment performance and increase injury risk. It concerns the affected retrofit cases in that notice; it does not establish that yokes themselves are inherently unsafe. Owners concerned about an affected vehicle should check the recall notice, NHTSA’s recall lookup, or Tesla for vehicle-specific status.
Controls can differ by production period
Do not assume every Tesla yoke has the same horn control. Tesla’s Model X owner’s manual says vehicles manufactured approximately January 2024 onward sound the horn when the center of the yoke or wheel is pressed. Earlier vehicles use the button on the right side. Check the manual for the specific vehicle rather than relying on the shape of the steering control.

So, innovation or gimmick?
The yoke is a genuine cockpit-design alternative with a clear visual distinction and a possible display-visibility benefit. Whether it is practical for you depends on how its grip and controls feel in real driving. Without controlled evidence showing a safety or steering-performance advantage, neither “innovation” nor “gimmick” is a universal verdict: treat it as a preference to test, and treat any retrofit as a safety-critical configuration change.
