Ford dropped the manual transmission from the S650 Mustang EcoBoost for the 2024 model year, with contemporary reports attributing the decision to low demand: roughly 10% of outgoing EcoBoost orders reportedly chose a manual. The change narrowed the manual lineup, but did not eliminate manual S650s: the V8 GT retained a six-speed manual option. Some enthusiasts objected to losing the more accessible four-cylinder stick-shift Mustang, but available evidence does not show how many buyers left Ford because of it.
What decision did Ford make?
The S650 generation debuted for the 2024 model year with a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder and a 5.0-liter V8 in the GT. Ford’s September 2022 launch announcement described the GT as having a standard six-speed manual, with a 10-speed automatic also available. It did not promise a manual EcoBoost. Ford’s launch announcement framed the EcoBoost as the efficiency-oriented choice and the GT manual as a way to connect with V8 power.
Ford confirmed to contemporary outlets that the 2024 EcoBoost would be automatic-only. The Drive and MotorTrend both reported that the prior EcoBoost manual take rate was about 10%, citing that low demand as the rationale. That figure is an approximate reported take rate, not a published, comprehensive Ford business analysis. The Drive’s report also noted different bellhousing designs for EcoBoost and V8 engines; the reporting does not establish that this difference made a manual impossible or was the decisive reason for its removal. MotorTrend reported the removal and approximate take-rate rationale independently.
Which S650 Mustangs still offer a manual?
The decision applied to the EcoBoost, not the whole Mustang range. Ford’s 2025 U.S. order guide lists the MT82-D4 manual transmission as GT-only, confirming that the EcoBoost remained automatic-only in that model-year guide while a GT manual remained available. The 2025 order guide is specific to that model year and the U.S. market; configurations can vary by year and market.

| Configuration | Manual availability in the cited 2025 U.S. guide | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| EcoBoost, 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder | No manual listed | Automatic-only in the 2025 guide. |
| GT, 5.0-liter V8 | Six-speed manual listed | The guide identifies the manual transmission as GT-only. |
The practical consequence for a buyer who wants a new S650 with three pedals is that the cited lineup requires moving from EcoBoost to a V8 GT configuration. Someone prioritizing a four-cylinder Mustang and a manual needs to consider an earlier model year; the supplied sources do not establish current used-car prices or quantify the cost difference between those choices.
Did the decision actually drive enthusiasts away?
There is evidence of disappointment, but not a measured count of defections. A Mustang7G forum thread titled “New S650 owner, is this a mistake?” reflects at least one owner’s concern about the car, but a single forum discussion cannot establish how representative that reaction is. The thread is anecdotal evidence, not a survey of Mustang buyers.

Ford-reported early orders also show interest in the manual—but not specifically in an EcoBoost manual. As of August 11, 2023, Ford reported about 13,000 U.S. orders for 2024 Mustangs; 67% included a V8 and more than a quarter sought the six-speed manual, according to the Associated Press. These were early orders, not final sales. AP noted that early buyers tend to include enthusiasts, and quoted analyst Sam Abuelsamid saying hard-core fans may buy early because they do not know when the opportunity will end. The figures therefore show early enthusiasm for V8 and manual Mustangs, not how many EcoBoost manual shoppers existed or whether anyone defected to another brand because Ford removed the option.

The EcoBoost manual occupied a distinct place in the lineup: it paired the four-cylinder engine with a manual, rather than requiring a buyer who wanted three pedals to choose a V8 GT. Removing that pairing reduced choice for drivers who preferred a manual but did not want the V8 configuration. Ford’s own launch language emphasized the manual as a connection to V8 power, while the reported take rate suggests relatively few outgoing EcoBoost buyers selected the stick shift. Those facts explain the tension: a low-volume option can matter to a committed slice of enthusiasts even when it is a small share of orders.

Ford CEO Jim Farley presented the S650 as an investment in the future of the nameplate while competitors were leaving internal-combustion vehicles. The product decision was more selective than a retreat from manuals altogether: Ford kept the manual in the V8 GT lineup, but not the EcoBoost. The available sources do not disclose all internal factors behind that choice, so it would be inaccurate to reduce it to a single engineering constraint or claim a quantified loss of customers.
