Which electric cars have the best driver assistance?
Euro NCAP published its comparison on 4 June 2025. Among the electric cars identified in that assessment, the four “Very Good” models are the strongest-rated examples in this group. The XPENG G9 is the “Good” example, while the Tesla Model S and Volvo EX30 received “Moderate.” The grades are for assisted-driving performance, not crash-test stars or a promise that a car can drive itself.

| Electric car | Euro NCAP 2025 Assisted Driving grade |
|---|---|
| Kia EV3 | Very Good |
| Porsche Macan | Very Good |
| Renault 5 | Very Good |
| Toyota bZ4X | Very Good |
| XPENG G9 | Good |
| Tesla Model S | Moderate |
| Volvo EX30 | Moderate |
The full Euro NCAP release also lists the MAZDA CX-80 as “Good” and the MG ZS as “Moderate.” They are left out of this EV shortlist because the assessment information does not establish that those exact named models are battery-electric vehicles. That distinction matters: an assessment list is not, by itself, proof of a vehicle’s powertrain type.
Euro NCAP’s results are a dated comparison of selected models, not an inventory of every EV offered in Europe in 2025 or 2026. They do not establish how many cars on sale have advanced assistance, nor do they settle which car is best for every driver. Treat the grade as a useful starting point for asking how well a particular system supports and protects its driver. A “Very Good” Assisted Driving grade is not a Euro NCAP star rating, and it does not mean that a vehicle can operate autonomously.

What “advanced driver assistance” does—and does not—mean
Euro NCAP describes Highway Assist as a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane centering. In practical terms, the system can help manage speed and following distance while helping keep the vehicle within its lane. The driver remains responsible for the vehicle and must stay engaged. These capabilities are driver assistance, not autonomous driving.
The European Commission places assisted driving at Level 2 automation under the EU framework, aligned with UN Regulation 171 on Driver Control Assistance Systems. The level label does not transfer responsibility from the person at the wheel to the car. A system’s ability to control speed or steer for a time is not permission to stop paying attention, nor does it establish that the vehicle can handle every road, traffic condition or system limitation. The driver must be ready to supervise and respond.
Names such as “Highway Assist,” “Autopilot” or “lane-keeping” are not a reliable way to compare capability. Euro NCAP found differences among assessed cars in implementation, driver information, monitoring and backup performance. Two systems with similar-sounding feature names may therefore behave differently or provide different support when a situation becomes difficult. A feature label alone also does not tell you which equipment is fitted to a particular trim or market version.
How to read the two parts of the Euro NCAP assessment
Euro NCAP separates Assisted Driving performance into two dimensions. Looking at both is more informative than treating the overall grade—or one impressive percentage—as a complete verdict.

Assistance Competence
Assistance Competence concerns how well the system supports the driver while keeping that driver appropriately involved. Euro NCAP includes the clarity of information about assistance and its limits, alerts, driver monitoring, collaboration between driver and vehicle, speed-limit detection, and adaptive cruise-control performance. This dimension helps answer whether assistance is understandable and appropriately supervised, as well as whether it performs its driving-support role.
For buyers, the practical questions include whether the system makes its status and limits clear, how it signals that the driver needs to take over, and how it checks that the person at the wheel is still engaged. Speed-limit detection and adaptive cruise-control performance are part of the assessment too, so competence is broader than simply whether the car can follow a lane.
Safety Backup
Safety Backup concerns what happens when a hazard, a system limitation or an unresponsive driver creates a problem. Euro NCAP considers collision avoidance involving other road users, the system’s response when sensors or cameras are obstructed, and whether the car slows to a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. A strong backup score and strong day-to-day assistance competence are related considerations, but they are not interchangeable.

A buyer should look beyond whether a car offers cruise control and lane centering and ask what the system communicates, how it checks that the driver is engaged, and how it responds when assistance cannot safely continue. Euro NCAP’s AD/ADAS Technical Manager, Adriano Palao, said: “A well-designed system will co-operate with the driver, appropriately inform about the level of assistance, and ultimately offer crash avoidance in critical situations; otherwise, it may introduce additional risks.”

What the Porsche Macan and Tesla Model S scores show
Euro NCAP reported 85% Assistance Competence and 92% Safety Backup for the assessed Porsche Macan InnoDrive with Active Lane-Keeping system. The two high figures indicate performance on separate assessment dimensions; they are not an overall safety score, a crash rating or a guarantee of a particular real-world outcome.
For the assessed Tesla Model S Autopilot system, Euro NCAP reported 30% Assistance Competence and 94% Safety Backup. Euro NCAP’s release characterized its Safety Backup performance as good and its Assistance Competence performance as poor. The contrast illustrates why it would be misleading to quote only the 94% figure: it describes one part of the assessment and does not erase the much lower score on the other part. A high backup result does not mean the system necessarily excels at informing or collaborating with the driver.
Neither pair of figures should be transferred automatically to a different model year, trim, software version, country specification or equipment package. Euro NCAP says its grading applies to optional equipment offered as standard or as an option. Before treating an assessment as relevant to a car being sold to you, check that the vehicle has the assessed system and configuration.
How EU safety rules fit into the comparison
EU-wide minimum requirements provide important context, but they are not a ranking of which manufacturer’s driver-assistance system works best. The revised General Safety Regulation was adopted on 27 November 2019 and has applied since 6 July 2022. The European Commission says requirements apply to new vehicle types and to all new vehicles from 7 July 2024.

The listed mandatory systems include intelligent speed assistance, reversing detection, attention warning, event data recorders, cybersecurity and an emergency stop signal. Cars and vans also have requirements including lane-keeping systems and automated braking. These requirements describe a regulatory baseline; they do not show that every vehicle implements an optional highway-assistance package in the same way or performs equally well in an independent assisted-driving assessment.
A further set of EU requirements took effect on 7 July 2026, according to a European Commission notice published on 8 July 2026. The notice covers advanced emergency braking that detects pedestrians and cyclists, an advanced driver-distraction warning system, better forward vision, new tests for worn tyres and an expanded safety-glass area. These are regulatory measures, not comparative ratings of the seven cars above. The regulatory dates and scope described here are EU-level; they do not cover every European market outside the EU.

A headline rating is useful only if it matches the car you can actually order or test-drive. Availability and standard equipment can differ by country, model year, trim and option package. Use the following checks with the seller and, where possible, verify them against the vehicle’s own specification and documentation.

Confirm the model year, trim and country configuration. Ask whether the system in the assessment is the same system fitted to the car, rather than assuming that a grade covers every version of a model.
- Find out whether the equipment is standard or optional. Ask which driver-assistance features are included in the specific vehicle and which require an option package. Euro NCAP’s grade applies to the equipment configuration assessed; it does not establish that the equipment is standard on every version.
- Ask what the system actually does. Clarify whether it combines adaptive cruise control with lane centering, what operating limits the manufacturer specifies, and how the car communicates those limits. Do not infer capability from the feature name alone.
- Check driver monitoring and alerts. Find out how the vehicle checks that the driver is engaged, what warnings it gives, and what happens if the driver does not respond. These are central parts of assistance competence and safety backup, not minor interface details.
- Ask how the car handles interruptions and hazards. Ask what happens if a camera or sensor is obstructed, the system reaches a limit, or the driver becomes unresponsive. Euro NCAP’s Safety Backup dimension specifically considers these types of response.
- Test the system in person. Arrange an extensive test drive with the assistance features enabled, and pay attention to the information, alerts and driver-monitoring behaviour rather than judging only whether the car can steer or maintain distance. Euro NCAP recommends extensive test drives because systems differ between manufacturers.
For a purchase decision, use the 2025 grades to shortlist models, then verify the specific equipment and try the system in the configuration you are considering. The assessment gives a structured comparison, but it cannot substitute for checking the exact vehicle or for the driver’s continued supervision.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which electric cars received Euro NCAP’s highest Assisted Driving grade in 2025?
The Kia EV3, Porsche Macan, Renault 5 and Toyota bZ4X received “Very Good” in Euro NCAP’s 2025 assessment. The XPENG G9 was rated “Good”; the Tesla Model S and Volvo EX30 were rated “Moderate.” These are assessed examples, not a complete list of EVs sold in Europe.
Are electric cars with Highway Assist self-driving?
No. Euro NCAP describes Highway Assist as adaptive cruise control combined with lane centering. The driver remains responsible and must stay engaged. The EU framework classifies assisted driving as Level 2 automation, not autonomous operation.
Why did the Tesla Model S score 94% in Safety Backup but only 30% in Assistance Competence?
The percentages measure separate dimensions. Safety Backup covers responses such as collision avoidance, obstructed sensors and a safe stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. Assistance Competence covers driver information, limits, monitoring, collaboration, speed-limit detection and adaptive cruise-control performance. The high score in one dimension does not cancel the lower score in the other.

Not necessarily. Check the exact model year, country, trim, software version and option package. The grade applies to the system and equipment assessed, which may be optional or standard depending on the vehicle configuration.
Do EU safety requirements show which EV has the best driver assistance?
No. EU regulations set minimum requirements, including specified safety systems; they do not rank the comparative performance of optional highway-assistance systems. Use an independent assisted-driving assessment to compare implementation, and confirm the specification of the car you are considering.
The Bottom Line
The Kia EV3, Porsche Macan, Renault 5 and Toyota bZ4X are the “Very Good” electric-car examples in Euro NCAP’s 2025 Assisted Driving assessment. Use the grades as a shortlist, not a guarantee or a claim of self-driving ability: compare Assistance Competence and Safety Backup, confirm the exact country-specific trim and equipment, and test the system while staying ready to supervise.
