Replace a tire when its tread reaches 2/32 inch, its wear bars are flush with the tread, or it has dangerous damage. Do not wait for a mileage number. Have tires professionally inspected after five years in service and plan to replace them by 10 years from their manufacture date, even if they still appear to have tread.
How many miles do tires last?
There is no safe, universal mileage interval. Inflation, wheel alignment, vehicle load, climate, road surfaces, tire construction and driving style can make two identical tires wear at very different rates.

Tire Rack cites approximately six years of service as a planning figure and uses average U.S. driving of about 14,000 miles per year, a Federal Highway Administration figure cited on its page, as context. That is not a replacement rule: it describes typical use, not a guaranteed lifespan or safety threshold. Michelin likewise states that no single rule determines how long a tire will last.

Use mileage to schedule inspections, not to override the tire’s condition. A tire driven lightly can age out before its tread is gone; a heavily used tire can reach the legal safety threshold much sooner.

The safety threshold: 2/32 inch of tread
NHTSA says tires are unsafe and should be replaced when tread is worn to 2/32 inch. Bridgestone says its tread-wear indicators become flush with the surrounding tread at that depth.
How to check tread
- Examine every main groove across the tire, not just the outer shoulder.
- Replace the tire when any wear bar is level with the tread surface or a tread-depth gauge reads 2/32 inch or less.
- For a quick screen, insert a Lincoln penny upside down into a groove. If you can see the full head, the tire may be at or below the replacement threshold; confirm with a gauge or professional inspection.
Do not treat a penny test as a precise measurement. Tread can wear unevenly, so check several grooves and locations on each tire.
Replace sooner for damage or performance changes
A tire can be unsafe with ample tread remaining. Arrange an immediate professional assessment—and do not continue driving on it if its condition is clearly hazardous—when you find:

- Bulges or bubbles in a sidewall
- Deep cuts, cracking, punctures or exposed cords
- Irregular, cupped or rapidly uneven wear
- Repeated air loss after inflation
- New vibration, pulling, thumping or unusual road noise
A repairable puncture in the central tread is different from sidewall or shoulder damage. A qualified tire professional must decide whether a repair is permitted and safe.
Should you replace tires at five years?
Five years is an inspection milestone, not an automatic replacement date. Bridgestone and Michelin recommend professional inspection after five years of service because rubber and internal materials age even when tread looks good. The inspection should consider cracking, deformation, repairs, wear pattern, inflation history and the tire’s environment.
Plan to remove tires from service at 10 years from manufacture. Bridgestone recommends replacing tires manufactured 10 years earlier or more, regardless of remaining tread. Replace earlier if the tire reaches 2/32 inch, shows damage or develops performance symptoms.

How to read a tire’s DOT date code
Find the DOT tire identification number (TIN) molded on the sidewall. Its final four digits identify the manufacturing week and year:

|---|---|
| 4617 | Manufactured in week 46 of 2017 |
| 0923 | Manufactured in week 9 of 2023 |
The complete TIN may appear on only one sidewall, so you may need to inspect the vehicle’s inner sidewall. Calculate age from the manufacture date, not from the date you bought or installed the tire.
A monthly tire inspection routine
- Measure cold pressure. Use a pressure gauge before driving and compare the reading with the vehicle placard (usually in the driver’s-door jamb) or the owner’s manual. Do not use the maximum pressure molded into the tire as the vehicle’s target unless the manufacturer specifies it.
- Check tread depth. Scan all grooves and shoulders for wear bars, low readings and differences between tires. A tread-depth gauge is more reliable than visual estimation.
- Inspect the sidewalls and tread. Look for cuts, cracks, bulges, punctures and exposed cords.
- Notice changes while driving. Vibration, noise, pulling or repeated pressure loss warrants an inspection, even if tread remains.
- Record the date code. Keep the manufacture week and year with your maintenance records so the 5- and 10-year milestones are not missed.
Why uneven wear matters
Uneven wear can consume usable tread prematurely and signal a problem with alignment, inflation, suspension or wheel balance. Correct the underlying cause when tires are replaced; otherwise, the new set can develop the same pattern.

- Underinflation commonly wears both shoulder areas.
- Overinflation can wear the center of the tread.
- Misalignment may wear one edge or create feathering.
- Suspension or balance problems can produce cupping and vibration.
Have replacement tires balanced and ask the installer to check alignment when wear is uneven or the vehicle pulls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to replace all four tires?
Not always. The decision depends on remaining tread, tire age, damage, drivetrain and the vehicle maker’s instructions.
Replace a pair on the same axle when appropriate
If one tire is damaged but the other tire on that axle has substantially similar age, model and remaining tread, replacing the pair can preserve balanced handling. When only two new tires are installed, many manufacturers and tire professionals place them on the rear axle to reduce oversteer risk, but follow your vehicle and tire maker’s guidance.

Replace all four on all-wheel-drive vehicles when required
Some all-wheel-drive systems require closely matched rolling circumference. A large tread-depth difference can strain the drivetrain. Check the owner’s manual or obtain the automaker’s specification before replacing fewer than four.
Respect staggered fitment
Performance vehicles may use different front and rear sizes. Do not rotate or substitute tires across axles unless the owner’s manual permits it. Match the specified size, load index and speed rating.
Choosing replacement tires safely
Use the vehicle placard and owner’s manual as the fitment authority. Match:
Recommended Free Tools
- Approved tire size
- Load index and speed rating
- Season and climate capability for your driving
- Vehicle-specific requirements such as run-flat construction or staggered sizing
When possible, keep the same brand and model on an axle and minimize tread-depth differences. Compare wet grip, winter performance, ride comfort, noise, expected use and warranty only after confirming fitment. A tread-depth gauge and a reliable digital pressure gauge are useful maintenance tools; installation should include balancing and valve-service checks.
Quick Recap
A practical replacement decision
| Condition | Action |
|---|---|
| Tread at or below 2/32 inch, or wear bars flush | Replace the tire now. |
| Bulge, exposed cord, severe crack or unsafe puncture | Stop using it and obtain a professional assessment; replacement is commonly required. |
| Repeated air loss, vibration, pulling or abnormal noise | Arrange an inspection promptly; do not rely on tread depth alone. |
| More than five years in service | Schedule a professional age-and-condition inspection. |
| 10 years from manufacture | Replace, regardless of remaining tread. |
| Uneven wear | Replace if worn or damaged and correct alignment, inflation, balance or suspension causes. |
