What Were the Chevrolet Corvair’s Biggest Problems, and Why Did Chevy Stop Making Them?

The Corvair’s best-known problem was a handling controversy involving early models. NHTSA later assessed the 1960–63 cars, while the reason for the model’s 1969 cancellation remains unsettled in the cited sources.

The Chevrolet Corvair’s best-known problem was a safety controversy over the handling of early models, particularly the 1960–63 cars and their rear suspension. Ralph Nader argued that the design could contribute to loss of control and rollover; a later federal investigation reached a different conclusion about those cars’ handling compared with some contemporary vehicles. Chevrolet built its last Corvair in 1969, but the available sources do not establish that the controversy alone caused the model’s cancellation.

What were the Corvair’s biggest problems?

Early models’ rear suspension and handling

The central issue in the Corvair’s public safety controversy was the rear suspension and its relationship to handling and stability in early cars. In Unsafe at Any Speed, Ralph Nader argued that the design could lead to violent skidding and rollover. That was an allegation about a particular safety concern, not evidence that every Corvair model year had the same handling characteristics or defect.

What the government investigation concluded

In a 1972 letter, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) described an investigation of 1960–63 Corvairs that reviewed General Motors documents, accident data and government comparative testing. NHTSA concluded: “We have concluded that the handling and stability of the 1960-63 Corvair does not result in an abnormal potential for loss of control or rollover and that the handling and stability performance is at least as good as the performance of some other contemporary vehicles both foreign and domestic.” Read NHTSA’s 1972 letter.

That conclusion is limited to the early models and comparative assessment described in the letter. It neither proves Nader’s allegation nor settles every possible safety criticism of every Corvair. The National Technical Reports Library also lists an independent panel report evaluating NHTSA’s approach, but its catalog record alone does not establish the panel’s detailed findings: catalog record for the Corvair handling and stability evaluation.

The lawsuit settlement was not a ruling on the car

The Federal Highway Administration’s historical account says General Motors settled Nader’s suit in August 1970 for $425,000 without admitting wrongdoing. A settlement is not a judicial finding that the Corvair was defective. Federal Highway Administration: “A Moment in Time: Highway Safety Breakthrough”.

When did Chevrolet stop making the Corvair?

Corvair production ended in 1969. The Corvair Owners Association’s history says the final car was built on May 14, 1969. Corvair Owners Association: Corvair history.

Why did Chevy stop making the Corvair?

The documented endpoint is the 1969 production end date; the sources cited here do not establish how much the safety controversy, sales, market changes or GM’s product strategy contributed to the decision. NHTSA’s conclusion came in 1972, after production had already ended, so it cannot explain the cancellation. It would be inaccurate to present the controversy as the proven sole reason Chevrolet discontinued the car.
