Diesel is usually the stronger choice for frequent heavy towing or sustained high-load work; gasoline is often the better fit for lighter daily use when a diesel’s extra costs are unlikely to pay back. Neither fuel is universally cheaper or more capable. Start with the truck’s class and exact configuration, confirm it can carry and tow your load, then compare fuel and ownership costs for the way you actually drive.

How do diesel and gasoline pickups differ?

Diesel engines often use fuel more efficiently than gasoline engines, but the size of that advantage depends on the vehicle and how it is driven. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says diesel vehicles often achieve higher fuel economy, in part because diesel fuel has about 15% higher energy density than gasoline. That broad trend is not a guarantee for every pickup: the EPA report excludes the largest heavy-duty pickups, so its finding should not be applied indiscriminately to every heavy-duty truck. EPA, The 2025 Automotive Trends Report.

Load changes the comparison. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration engineering study found that a diesel retained a substantial efficiency advantage under extreme loading, such as towing a heavy trailer up a grade at high road speed. The same study found that a boosted gasoline V6 could be competitive in lighter-use cycles. It is an older study of the engines and test cycles it evaluated—not a head-to-head test of current pickup models—so use it to understand why workload matters, not to predict a particular truck’s fuel economy. NHTSA pickup and engine study.

Which fuel fits your workload?

Mostly commuting and light use: lean gasoline

If the truck is mainly a daily driver and carries light loads or tows only occasionally, gasoline is often the more sensible starting point. A diesel’s purchase premium and any differences in upkeep may outweigh fuel savings when annual mileage or workload is modest. That is a calculation, not a universal rule: compare actual quotes, local fuel prices and the service requirements of the specific models.

Frequent heavy towing or sustained work: consider diesel

If you regularly tow a heavy trailer, travel long distances under load or operate at sustained high output, diesel deserves serious consideration. The load-related efficiency rationale is supported by NHTSA’s study, but that study does not establish current-model fuel savings or ownership costs. Verify that the truck is rated for the trailer and route, then test whether the expected savings justify the diesel option’s added cost.

Near a truck’s limits: choose capacity before fuel

When a trailer or payload is close to the truck’s limits, choose the truck class and configuration first. A diesel engine cannot make up for insufficient payload, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or gross combined weight rating (GCWR). A high tow rating is not permission to exceed any of those limits.

Check the exact truck’s towing and payload ratings

Published maximums belong to qualifying configurations, not every truck carrying the same model name or engine. Cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, tires and packages can change the rating. These U.S. model-year 2026 examples illustrate why the numbers must be tied to a particular vehicle and use case:

Manufacturer and model-year example Published figure What it means
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Up to 13,300 lb maximum light-duty towing; up to 2,260 lb maximum payload Configuration-dependent manufacturer maxima, not ratings for every Silverado or diesel build.
Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with available 3.0L Duramax diesel, 2WD EPA-estimated 28 mpg highway / 23 mpg city A specific manufacturer-published estimate for the stated configuration; it is not a loaded-towing result or a rating for all configurations.
Ford Super Duty Up to 40,000 lb diesel-powered gooseneck towing; up to 8,000 lb payload Ford’s advertised maximums for qualifying configurations, not ratings for every Super Duty.

Sources: Chevrolet 2026 Silverado information and Ford 2026 Super Duty specifications. Do not compare the Super Duty maximums directly with the Silverado 1500 figures as if they were competing versions of the same truck: they represent different truck classes and qualifying builds.

Before settling on an engine, check the specific vehicle’s door-label payload and manufacturer towing information against the fully loaded truck and trailer. Count people, cargo and installed accessories toward payload. For conventional towing, account for tongue weight; for a fifth-wheel or gooseneck, account for pin weight. Also check GVWR and GCWR, hitch and tire limits, and the applicable trailer ratings. The trailer’s loaded weight—not just its empty or advertised dry weight—is the figure that matters.

How to compare the real cost of gas and diesel

MPG alone does not tell you whether a diesel is worth buying. Compare the same kind of truck and use a realistic fuel-economy estimate for your route and load. The Department of Energy’s Vehicle Cost Calculator can help organize a user-specific comparison, but your inputs determine the result. DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator.

  1. Find the diesel purchase premium. Compare actual prices for otherwise similar trucks, including the trim and equipment you would buy.
  2. Estimate fuel cost per mile for each option. For each engine, divide local fuel price per gallon by expected miles per gallon. Use a realistic estimate for your city/highway mix, speeds, hills and towing—not an unloaded rating as a substitute for loaded operation.
  3. Estimate annual fuel savings. Subtract the diesel’s fuel cost per mile from the gasoline truck’s, then multiply the difference by your annual miles. If the diesel’s fuel cost per mile is higher for your use, it has no fuel-cost payback on that basis.
  4. Account for other ownership costs and your time horizon. Include scheduled service, plausible repair exposure, insurance and how long you plan to keep the truck. Do not assume a universal diesel maintenance premium; the available ownership-cost evidence is not a matched, current gas-versus-diesel pickup comparison.
  5. Compare the cumulative result with the premium. Treat fuel prices, real-world economy, resale and future repair costs as estimates. Change those assumptions to see whether the decision still holds.

A simple fuel-only payback estimate is the purchase premium divided by estimated annual fuel savings, expressed in years. It leaves out other cost differences unless you include them separately. There is no single break-even mileage that applies to all pickup buyers: the answer changes with the exact vehicles, local prices, annual miles, duty cycle and ownership period. DOE and Argonne’s total-cost-of-ownership report also discusses evidence gaps across vehicle powertrains and classes; it does not provide a universal pickup-specific gas-versus-diesel premium. What should you check before deciding?

  • Workload: Is the truck usually empty, mixed between commuting and hauling, or regularly under heavy load?
  • Exact build: Are the engine, cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, tires and packages the same in the vehicles you are comparing?
  • Capacity: Will loaded trailer weight, tongue or pin weight, passengers and cargo remain within the truck’s payload, GVWR, GCWR and applicable tow limits?
  • Operating economics: What are local gasoline and diesel prices, realistic fuel economy under your duty cycle, annual mileage and planned ownership period?
  • Ownership practicalities: Are suitable dealers and service available, and are you comfortable meeting the exact truck’s maintenance requirements?

For emissions, avoid declaring one fuel categorically cleaner. The comparison depends on the pollutant, model year, certification class, duty cycle and life-cycle boundary. EPA’s commercial-truck regulations page covers regulatory subjects; it does not establish a matched-pickup, life-cycle emissions comparison. EPA regulations for commercial trucks and buses.
